  • This Shows the use of the Shelly wifi switch to give timed control to a dumb rolec charger . the same princaple can be used to do the same with just about any EV charger . this will alow you to use your mobile phone or any device with web browser that can conect to your network to set times of charge on the device .. this device can also as brought can be used with a Mqqt server for control / as well as Alexa etc

    Great work.
    You could use a Shelly EM to have this feature and also the power monitoring and history.
    Moreover you could use power monitoring with another one placed on the house to trigger a disconnection in case of too much power pulled.
    I have done this in my house to disconnect AC and send an alarm before total disconnection.

    Thanks for making this video. I didn't realise such a device existing. Perfect for what I need to add timed charging to an old Rolec charger.

      No problem that the whole point to show how easy to get it to work without scrapping a good charger saves the environment. But more important saves beer tokens

    Great video. Wondering why you chose the CP connection rather than cutting the live feed to the control module itself? Controlling the CP wire means the LED indicators will continually flash when the charger is not in use. Although minimal, the flashing LED is consuming power. Controlling the live to the module would power off the control module, and just keep the charger in a state of readiness for when the module is powered up. Maybe this method would cause damage or issues though?

    Hi, I have a QUBEV Mk1, also made by Rolec and I'm getting my sparks to instal a Shelly relay. Is the layout much different? There's space enough but maybe the connections differ, so a little help is appreciated :) Especially as the night rate of 9p is a lot better that 32p but getting out at 00:30 to plug in manually is not appealing in winter! :)

    Hi, I have an EO mini charger, I have two wires from the plug side to the car, I have used the Shelly 1, but I can turn it on but it won't shut off, it makes the clicking noise but it does not shut off, van you please advise.

    Must be quite a few still working but not able to take a smart charge.

    Many thanks I have an old dumb Charge master cp. This will solve so many problems. I can't identify a 12v supply within the Charge master to power the Shelly so will have to use the 240v.
    Eg Shelley unit power L / N 240v. Chargmaster control thin black wire switched through the Shelley i / O on the low voltage side.
    Is this correct as I need those beer tokens

    Hi I have a rolec smart charger and the EV app will not let me set a time for off peak electric, can I use a Shelly 1 on the smart charger, it's an untethered charger thanks

  • @matthewbyrne8196
    @matthewbyrne8196 2 года назад

    Wired this up to my rolec untethered unit. I've interrupted the proximity pilot pin. It works perfectly at telling my rolec to initiate charge because the car is connected to it, by while during an ongoing charge if I make the Shelly an open circuit, it doesn't disengage the charge session. Very weird

    • @hotrex7779
      @hotrex7779  2 года назад

      Sorry for late response. When you say proximity pilot pin Are you sure you are on the correct pin as on a untertherd unit I would also expect to see a second control wire that is connected to the lead skt. This connects to a sense resistor in the lead Handel and this resistor tells the controler the maximum power that the lead can Handel. I have not tried intrupting this but I have fitted a variable resistor to it on an old rolec. It made it current adjustable. Output but other controlers respond diferantly Have you conected to this line and not the pilot co pin

    • @matthewbyrne8196
      @matthewbyrne8196 2 года назад

      @@hotrex7779 yup. That second wire is there alright. Odd behaviour from the car/charger

      @@matthewbyrne8196 have you tried fitting the device in the other wire as what you are describing should not happen . I think you are not connected into the pilot control wire

    • @matthewbyrne8196
      @matthewbyrne8196 2 года назад

      @@hotrex7779 I could do, but I am using the pilot control wire. The control pilot pin location for the untethered unit won't be different. It's a type 2 standard.

    • @hotrex7779
      @hotrex7779  2 года назад

      Then it’s is well strange as the car would be monitoring the pwm signal continually And adjust the charge rate dependent on the pwm. If it sees the pwm signal removed and the pilot signal voltage removed the car should stop charging at once as it is also a safety if the lead is pulled out this contact opens first . Again the charger unit should also remove mains voltage from the car in the event that this signal is lost .
      Very strange. Events.

    does 16A mean it wont work for a 32A EVE?

    • @brucet000
      @brucet000 3 года назад +1

      Ken, I think because you aren't using the shelly as the main relay it will work on a 32A Rolec, I've use a 32A one and I'm going to fit one as soon as I get a shelly

    The Shelley switch is only rated to 3.5kw so how is it safe for a 7kw Rolec?

    • @matthewbyrne8196
      @matthewbyrne8196 2 года назад +2

      It's not controlling 7kW, it's only controlling a signal pin

    On my timeswitch I connect the normally closed contact to a 1k resistor connected to the 12v output. Instead of the CP line being open circuit this makes the car believe it's connected to an EVSE in standby mode.

    • @trevdfield7520
      @trevdfield7520 2 года назад

      Am I right in thinking you put the 1k between the i and o on the shelly switch side lowering the sensor voltage? Do you know if this wiĺl work on a chargemaster cp?

    • @iPeel
      @iPeel 2 года назад

      @@trevdfield7520 the relay switch should have common, normally closed and normally open contacts. Common goes to the CP line out to the plug, normally open goes to the CP on the EVSE, then the 1k resistor goes between a 12v supply ( possibly on the EVSE controller ) and the normally closed pin of the relay switch.

      Hi. What car is it that you are using this on ? I can see that the car will think it’s connected to a charger . Does the car not respond to this signal and try to initiate a charge ? . The method I used was aimed at the MG ev. That needed this. To wake it up from sleep mode. But an interesting adaption

    • @iPeel
      @iPeel 2 года назад

      @@hotrex7779 my car's a Renault Zoe but it should work with any car, it imitates the specification a unit in standby would use so the car should not attempt to start a charge but wait for the EVSE to become available. Even if it did it wouldn't be successful as the CP line to the EVSE is interrupted with the dummy 12v supply.

    • @hotrex7779
      @hotrex7779  2 года назад

      @@iPeel it would be intresting to see how the Mg would respond to it. As the latest software that I tested a while ago would allow a delayed start. Ie. Give 12 volt car would pull down to 9 volt. Charger would delay giving pwm output until charge start time then car would start charge. But once this had been done once and charge was stoped by charger removing pwm signal. Then car would not start a charge again until the 12 volt had been removed. Or taken to -12volt for an extended time to reset. This is the way the omie charger remakes the Mg. ..
