- It is an all-too-common situation during a drought: In their quest for water, elephants venture into drying dams. One slip turns into a treacherous situation, as they become hopelessly stuck in the mud. Confronted with slick floors and sticky mud, elephants are unable to propel themselves to standing. Without help, it turns into a death trap.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

@@jameswahnee-vn5nt Elephant Sanctuary in TN, started with 2 elephants then they rescued another elephant later. They had a metal barrier between these elephants because they did not want the elephants get in fight as they do not know each other. When they put them in the barn, one of the elephants wanted to get to this new elephant so badly while trumpeting loudly and intertwining their trunks. The metal was even bent because they were pushing it so hard to get close.
They had to open the barrier gate. They hugged their trunks as if they were shouting out of excitement. They researched how this was possible. They found out that one of the elephant named Shirley was 15 when the other, I forgot her name, ele was barely one year old on the boat when they came to the US from Thailand. They suspected that Shirley acted as Nanny to that baby elephant. They got separated as soon as they landed in the US. They were both sold to the circus and such. They knew each other and never forgot about each other. Yes, they never forget.
I watched this documentary in 1984 and bawled all night watching it.
There is historical evidence found through research . Personal experiences , documented and proven evidence . They are very social creatures with structured relationships ! They grieve and share great empathy akin to humans .
There is nothing more beautiful than when men save animals, well done

Thank you for what you did. It is awful to think that there are so many animals out there who are suffering because of drought. I wish there were better water holes for them. It must be desperate for them trying to locate water. I love elephants.

Even if you're right about what you say about people basking in their do-gooderness instead of REALLY wanting to help and REALLY empathizing with the elephants (which I don't think),
so there would still be the existence of the truly good that one would feel and longingly try to conform to.
Even that would be reason for hope in this world.
I myself was simply touched by how people in this case actually pool their strengths and talents and care for the garden given by God.
It just touched me...probably just because I wanted to feel good?

I shoulden’t be answering someone who starts of a comment by initiating a personal attack.
I ALSO get moved - but I focus on the animals.
But somehow animal lovers abandons the grounds of love thinking that their affection makes them special. Recently saw a video about an American bald headed eagle sitting passive on the middle of a very busy road. In it’s it had gone in for a road kill and got hit by a car, breaking it’s wing.OK, that is sad....and of course you have to take into consideration if a species is threatened.But considering that wr are raising, slaughtering and consuming some 80 billion chickens each year on a global scale, it is hilarious to se how people a FLOCKING around the incident, spilling their alleged compasion to get a piece of the validation, so generously passed from one....right...person to another in the crowd.....like frisbees.
Or like emoticons in a tread like this one......
I am sorry but I doubt the authenticity when people are so fast to shift their focus from the suffering animal just to cheer themselves.
So I wonder who is the misantrope......?
PS: I take wounded animals in my care on a regular basis - I just don’t make fuzz about it.

The amazing conservation the work that the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust carries out in Kenya is truly inspirational and Daphne Sheldrick's legacy lives on with her Unsung Heroes, continuing to protect and save Africa's giants.
It was a truly moving and uplifting moment to see the elephants saved from the mud and look back at the people who saved them.

If it had been up to God it appears he sat on his hands watching these creatures slowly die. It was humans that came to the rescue. Face facts instead your twee world where whenever anything good happens then it’s thanks to god, but whenever tragedy and death occur you shrug your shoulders and put it down to misfortune. God is all powerful, all, knowing and ever present isn’t he?… he’s a monster then.
@@roppa789 God is not responsible for everything that happens on this planet - He gave mankind free will and dominion over the earth, and look what we've done with it! However, God DOES work through people and these poor elephants WERE found and rescued by people who cared. They could have been left there to die.
Looking at the state of the world today it seems to me that if there's a god, he must be one sadistic asshole. This is the work of caring and compassionate human beings. God or any other fictional character has nothing to do with it.

How these were even spotted as they blend in so well is beyond me. SIMPLY AMAZING WORK in saving these two x
I read the full story on the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust website, and they said the ellie-friendly ranch where this occurred are doing daily patrols to the waterholes to check for trapped ellies. So the ranch hands were actively looking for them. Otherwise, you're right, they would have been hard to spot!
The ranch hands know the drought transforms waterholes into deadly traps for elephants right when the elephants are desperate for water. As the waterholes dry, the floor becomes very slippery and the mud becomes very thick sticky glue. It would be like falling into a pool of cement on top of an ice rink while wearing an extra 100 kilos! Ellies have a hard time getting up in less than ideal conditions, they are so heavy.
The extreme droughts that cause the waterholes to dry up and become deadly traps are man-made. Wildlife are innocent victims of greenhouse gases and climate change, it is really our responsibility to protect ellies and other animals from our egregious mistakes that are causing them so much death and suffering. I am making donations to Sheldrick Wildlife Trust projects to provide water, rescue and veterinary treatment, aerial surveillance, community education and reforestation--as well as adopting an orphan. I hope others will help if they can, according to what they can give and which project speaks to them. Thanks to everyone who care!

There were children in china who put your phone together so that you could feel sorry for the elephants. Thank those little hands for the emotion they brought to you. They deserve a little emotion from you, but not like you gave the the elephants, because they’re paid, very little, but paid.
