A Divided America Agrees: We Deserve Better Than This

- The latest national poll (www.nytimes.com/2024/07/03/us...) from The New York Times and Siena College shows former President Donald J. Trump leading President Biden by nine percentage points among registered voters - a pretty big shift in his direction in the week since the presidential debate.
It has become clear in the past week that there is no obvious path to replacing Mr. Biden as the Democratic Party’s nominee. But there is a strong desire among Americans for something different.
We heard that directly from voters we met last week in Kenosha, Wis., at a gathering of a group called Braver Angels. It’s a nonpartisan organization that finds common ground across political divisions, and it proved a perfect focus group after the debate.
We asked these deeply engaged citizens, who had chosen to spend their free time debating policy and politics, how they were feeling about their options for president in November.
Their perspective reinforced the gap that this unique political moment has exposed between voters and party leaders.
The questions are: Has Mr. Biden’s debate performance made the continuation of his campaign untenable? And what, if anything, should happen next?
Do you have a question about the 2024 election? We want to hear from you. Fill out this form (www.nytimes.com/article/2024-...) or email us at therunup@nytimes.com (mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?fs=...)
All these people bitched their way through two primaries about how Bernie Sanders was "too old" only to vote for a man the exact same age, clearly in advancing stages of Alzheimer's al the way back in 2019, and spend 4 years telling us he's really only 30 and has a photographic memory. Meanwhile we could be in a 7th year of a Sanders administration with universal healthcare, housing rights and $15 minimum wage-- not to mention not be fomenting nuclear wars with Russia and the middle east. When are people going to finally hold the Democrats and the liberal media machine accountable for screwing us over?!
Exactly
@worldadventuretravel the dems will never stop cowing to their DNC gods. Not gonna happen. People can hate on Trump, but the fact is the right blew up their system and told political party leaders that voters are in charge, not them.

Love that I’m not sure if you mean this positively or negatively. Trump did stupid shit but boy that cost of living was so uhbetter
@@Please654 I’ll clarify my position - Trump as president was a disaster. He quickly made the US the shame of the international community. Over 400,000 people died under his watch during the COVID-19 pandemic due to fumbled handling in the early days. He racked up nearly $8T in debt. His tax scam for the rich cost the public millions. His border wall plan was a fringe, lunatic waste of money. He was essentially a mouthpiece for Putin at various international summits. The United States cannot afford another Trump presidency.
In a "democracy" people get the government they deserve.
Not if you're not even allowed the candidate who would win fairly. Election after election our candidate is forced on us by both "leading" parties . We don't have to vote for them. It's not a throw away vote! It is a protest vote.
We need Bernie more than ever. He's the only true populist that has a 40+yr record doing what's right for people on the ground
I love Bernie but come on... he's even older than Biden.
@@wjfox2006 people like to say this but he's still shooting hoops, holding unedited interviews, and doing rallies. Hes the only one that could actually win. He brings the disparaged, the youth, voters on the fence, swing states, the rust belt and even some far right maga (the ones that wanted trump to be populist where he clearly isn't). That's huge and an ocean wider than what Kamala and Biden could claim to. It's only 4yrs, he would pick a VP that would do us well and do the honourable thing if his capacity did diminish. The guy is gold
Stop trying to make fetch happen
@@wjfox2006 he still shoots hoops on weekends, rallies across the country fighting the food fight, and maintains high cognitive ability during live and long-form interviews. How is that too old? Old age but not old as in diminishing.
The reason this is best case scenario is for one, he's got the overwhelming support (if say much more than trump) especially among his peers. He would obviously only have 1 term, during that term he would def put a woman as VP. That VP would have a drastically higher presence than any other VP in history. Why you ask? Because he would want to propel them into an actually successful bid in 2028. Right now with the state of things, if Kamala were to be put up, she would be demolished l. She's not been given credence the entire time Biden's been in and her record/resume beyond that is pitiful - 1 term in Congress and a contentious time as an attorney. It's just not material enough against the likes and risks with trump.
Also, much of the praised output of the Biden admin was watered down Bernie policy anyway. It's popular (albeit lightweight from establishment Dems) and they know it. But diluted simply won't cut it, people can clearly see that. We might as well have the OG himself. And to anyone that thinks 'hes too extreme' don't worry, the oligarchs won't let him have too much regardless; Bernie fights for going the mile while knowing damn well if we only get 3% of the way that that's good, it's progress in the right direction.
So, a for-sure bet now while the skillet is on fire, propping up VP for a real future's chance, and doing good populist policy for at a minimum of 4 years...this will all make the Dems look good, they'll actually output what they claim stake to for a change.

@@RB-.- Anything short of a nationwide bad is " moderate" now? They haven't had a chance to do it. They get one they will. Because they don't care how many women or how many babies it kills, yes abortion bans kill both and increase, not decrease the number of abortions. Because they aren't about anything but controlling women. We get a Republican Congress they will pass a ban. If Trump is president he will sign it. They already polluted the court with insane ideologues who have trashed the rule of law. Just so they could take women's rights. Not " moderate" by a long shot.

We must repeal the 19th Amendment. Women are not capable of rational thought.
Parties have a monopoly on candidate choices. We choose between the trash they allow us to. Saw it first hand in 2016 in Philly. The media is a key player in that monopoly. "Spin room"? Doesn't get more on the nose than that, kids. Since what we have is largely exclusive to the public will, it seems the ONLY chance at breaking that cycle is to supplant those structures by way of alternatives. We need new party coalitions to compete. Voters on both sides have many commonalities and paths to addressing local problems. We just need to do it without regard for all the noise the establishment always makes about it.
IMHO the US needs a new voting system. One that allows more viable choices than just two. Sadly neither Democrats nor Republicans will advocate for this, because they benefit from this duopoly and don't want more competition.

@@powermaxx11 Very easily, apparently! I've never heard someone so easily and dramatically swayed by a couple of statements from a politician. (Just imagine if the Dems had put up someone competent against Trump...)
The first arguement against Democracy is a conversation with the average voter.
I don't understand why American voters seem to place so much attention on individual candidates and how they make them feel, rather than discussing policy or a larger political vision for the country. I wish we could have more political formats discussing policy proposals like Project 2025, tax reform or the success (or failure) of bills like the Chips Act, Infrastructure Bill or Inflation Reduction Act. Those would affect the average American far more than how a candidate presents him or herself, and might have a chance of rendering a better roster of candidates as well. Perhaps a bit of a meandering point, but would be interested to hear what people think.
It doesn’t seem that you understand either American politics or politics more broadly.
Philosophically, I agree with you. But practically, that would require a lot of research on the part of voters. I'm personally willing (and even eager) to do that kind of research to keep myself informed, but I also have more free time than a lot of American adults. Ideally we'd all be tuned into these major bills and policies that affect our lives and our future, but people are busy and tired and they don't care to dive into the complex machinations of congressional bills and government initiatives. Thus, they go with whichever guy has the "vibe" they're looking for in a leader. It's a bummer.
From my seat, it is pretty clear that most Americans do not have any intellectual curiosity about things they don’t understand or that they disagree with. The importance of history or unimportance of history is embarrassing. How little so many people know about past events and how they affect today…. history is filled with examples of autocrats using existing Democratic freedoms to gain power only to form a dictatorship where independence of the media, the right to change the existing government by free and fair elections and freedom of individual opinion and protest are violently repressed.
Instead they want simple solutions to complicated problems like closing the border like deporting, illegal aliens like tariffs on imports, like removing checks and balances in our government, with the false assumption by punishing others or removing opposition that their lives will get better…….without giving one iota of thought that this policy, is designed to create a one party state and is militarizing the police for future action against other civilians in the United States that are not here illegally, and that simply disagree with the policy of our government.
