1:01 "Differences between them are not very significant" Struggles to penetrate a slightly angled Panther through 80mm UFP, with APHE at point blank range... Penetrates Panther 80mm UFP from 3000m away with APHEBC!!! Yea... not significant at all
APHE does not have BC therefore they are more likely to bounce off angled armor. As you can see in the shell info, APHE bounces at 65 degree while APHEBC bounces at 71 degree. Given Panther has 55 degree from horizontal, that means your APHE will always bounce off it front at close to point blank. That combine with the long distance shot - as you said 3km - significantly increase the impact angle. As a result, hitting at longer range against slope armor reduce the chance that a shell may bounce off. And if you want a shell that can lol pen all the panther 1 series from the front try the 17 pounder with APDS.
@@nekurumi1825 That's not how it works at all. Prepare for a long comment: APHEBC isn't better from APHE because of BC-ballistic cap. BC makes the shell more aerodynamic, not better against angled armour. For example US and Italian APBC shells perform against angled armour exactly the same as AP shells. APHEBC are so much superior against angled armour because they have blunt armour piercing nose beneath ballistic cap (don't confuse it with C-cap on APC). That blunt nose according to Gaijin makes the shell stick to angled armour better and increases normalization. Only soviet APHEBC and APBC have blunt nose so only they benefit from it. (Also Begleitpanzer 57mm APHEBC) There are 2 things influencing shell penetration of angled armour- bounce chance angle and normalization. Normalization is an effect of a shell tilting toward armour when hitting (normalizing into perpendicular relative to a armour plate). For example APCR has LOW chance of bouncing (high angle of attack when it bounces 100% of the time-72 degree) and also extremely bad normalization, that's why it penetrates angled amour terribly- it doesn't but it also rarely bounces if you look at hitcam in game. AP has medium chance of bouncing (quite low angle when it bounces 100% of the time-65 degree) but decent normalization. APC and APCBC have low chance of bouncing (71 degree) but a bit worse normalization than AP in most cases. Soviet APBC and APHEBC have the same low chance of bouncing as APCBC but also EXTREMELY good normalization. APDS you mentioned has very low chance of bouncing (80 degree) and very good normalization. APHE bounces at 65 degree from VERTICAL. Panther has 55 degree angle from HORIZONTAL (35 degree from vertical) so it usually doesn't bounce. Bounce change is also influenced by overmatch, so such a high calliber would have even lower chance of bounce when hitting only 80mm thick plate. In a nutshell: 152mm APHE doesn't bounce from Panther UFP, it just doesn't penetrate because shell passes though armour at such an angle that effective thickeness of that amour is just too big. Imagine a line inside the amour that the shell follows when penetrating. APHE has a longer line though armour, and APHEBC has shorter line because it tilts toward armour, making the path though armour shorter. I said that APHEBC can pen Panther UFP from 3000m away (tested in protection analysis) but it doesn't take into account shell drop, that would probably make the distance even longer by a few hundred meters. Also forgot to mention, soviet APHEBC have so great penetration of angled armour mainly when facing overmatched armour- of thickness lower than the calliber of APHEBC shell. And yes, shell statcard showing different penetration values against armour at 0, 30 and 60 degree don't take into account overmatch at all, so that's why APHEBC appears to be not that amazing against angled armour. But once the amour is even a bit thinnner than shell calliber the soviet magic kicks in.
Yup Alpakinator, said it completely right, APHEBC is way better, you can indeed pen Panther front armor from afar, but also Jumbo with large angle tanks to the negation of its slope armor. So the difference and it remains true for all Soviet tanks is pretty huge, since slope armor that could be too thick for your gun thanks to their slope, become kinda irrelevant.
@@Azcabalt Yup, it's so annoying that most players (including youtubers) have no idea about this APHEBC madness, but when somenone recognizes it it's hearwarming.
I've been expecting a review of my all-time favourite ground vehicle in World War Two. Thank you for posting the video! I agree with you on some of the things you said but disagree on others. ISU-152 has a magnificent gun and I love every aspect of it. Yes, the traverse angle is rather small, and yes, the reloading process is long, but these two things are NOT really negative when you use this vehicle in the correct manner. You said it yourself - ISU-152 is not something you want to hop in and rush A. Instead, you want to stay in the back and snipe. There are people who don't like this type of play, but then these people should not drive ISU-152. This vehicle is an excellent defender, as well as support firepower for heavy tanks, both of which you correctly noted in the video. My experience with its APHE shells is that they do a really good job. HEAT shells are, as you pointed out, rather unpredictable, so I only carry 5 of those into battle and only use them when the target is at a greater distance. I sometimes get frustrated with its armour protection, but most of the times the frustration is a product of my bad choices made during the battle. When you use it like it was supposed to be used, then ISU-152 is a joy to play.
for me i look at how isu was used IRL. it says heavy assault gun, so i stay with a group of 2 or 3 medium tanks near the back and go in for big revenues
While I agree that the Armour is not the best, it has worked for me very well, resisting many shots (up to 7-8) if angled correctly, because with this tank what you don't want to do is peek and show your front, it's best to peek around at an angle, let the enemy fire, and will most likely bounce off the 90mm frontal, hit the mantlet which at most will damage the gun barrel (not an issue, you can fall back very easy) and if they hit the 75mm it shouldn't pen either body cause again, you are at an angle and must show most of the 90mm front and mantlet, so when they shoot you keep peeking until you get the gun on target and ez kill
The main reason that I played this tank was to kill tiger 2 s frontally. One of my most satisfying moments was when I first killed a Panther frontally with my IS-2, after countless times of it bullying me in my 5.3, and i was hoping for sth similar, boy was I right !!
@Hans Blitzkrieg Plus, if your loaders are hit you might as well go make yourself a toast after firing. It is tricky to play, there are tanks which are just more effective, nevertheless it remains satisfying shooting 152mm rounds from time to time.
Damn man Iam watching ur vids for a y now and they have been improved af.From the smooth scenes to the script, everything looks a lot better now.All that hard work u put in them really pays of
Finally you review my favourite viechle! My strategy is to drive at opponents at an angle, acting as if i do not see them and when their shot bounces I turn towards them and fire the nuke. Most brain dead war thunder players will not aim for the weak spot when angling (the pre angled plates on the sides) so they end up shooting front plate or side plate which, when angled can even bounce king tiger shell
The HEAT shells on this monstrosity have never failed me. THe explosion isn't as flashy, but usually you blow up either fuel tanks or ammo, and the additional penetration is great. By far my favourite ISU, it has such great potential.
Important point on the APHEBC: It performs incredibly well against angled armor, to the point of pretty much acting as if any target short of a STRV 103 is flat. It can even penetrate the UFP of a Panther consistently.
“It might detonate ammo rack, or it might make machine gun yellow” This. once shot a wirbelwind with a KV-2 HE shell point-plank and only broke 1 of his guns. then shot a tiger on the front of the Hull forgetting I had HE loaded in the ISU-152, and it killed every single person in the tank. HE, now with 90% RNG as the explosive composition
I love that tank if you angle with the right side of it with bushes and prepare to bounce for days. I also use heat shells for long range in 1.5km+ maps. Even the rear armor is trolly in it. I love it.
Casemate tanks are pretty wretched for me to play. I tend to only use one as an emergency tertiary backup. Russian lack of gun depression doesn't seem like a big deal until you play on a remotely uneven map, and then it's dreadful. So when i want to play heavy tanks with big guns I mostly go German.
