My wife bought one of these late last year. Its an absolute hoot to drive on a tight, twisty road. Real world fuel economy is about 4.5L/100kms, mix urban and highway (with very steep hills). Back seat room is just ridiculous, and is something i still cant get over! You can also get a false boot floor that makes the load space flat with the back seats down. 100% the best 'hybrid' hot hatch on the used market.

Luckly in New Zealand, getting a grey import is actually normal. Most cars that come into the country are grey imports. Just about all car dealers, including brand dealerships are licenced importers. But for some reason, most of the imports they sell, they leave the cars with their original infotainment system, which is in Japanese. Imports are popular here as they are cheaper than an NZ New car and offer a wide range of options. Even European cars get imported from Japan.
The removal of the CVT and using the engine purely as a prime mover for the generator/battery was a masterstroke. The JATCO CVT has been a noose around Nissan-Renault's neck for decades. A brilliant small car concept.

These cars are great. I have a Nismo Limited Edition Black Model. There were 100 made I believe. Very expensive and hard to find in Japan. Need the optional Recaro seats to complete a perfect combination. The Recaro optional seats are VERY expensive in Japan. I have had a Nismo since 2017, and my average fuel use is 20 km. / liter. Quick and economical. I use Dunlop 050 performance tyres, 205/55 x 16 tyres, and the grip is exceptional , especially in the wet. I also have an AUTECH 4WD with all optional extras. A real blast on the Alpine ski roads of NZ. Average for 5000km with a long roofbox, was 15 km per liter. Very good cars. The S models I have imported get sold in minutes of being advertised.
Completely agree with the need of less powerful, more affordable and preferably lighter hot hatches. I have a Hyundai i30n performance and I’m going to sell it because I can’t really drive it fast anywhere a part from a race track. I’ve even been to court for speeding (empty road in the middle of nowhere and I was the only person in the car). Also love the Nissan e power concept, great transition solution before full ev.
These super fast hatches are actually super boring. They’re not fun in the real world. If you can get away with an MX5 they’re polar opposites, absolutely brilliant.
@@mattdebyl8806 I wouldn't call them boring, just a bit wasteful and not the best suited for 90% of your average driving (especially in the city, it's actually surpringly good for long trips). I still love the car. I was very close to buy the mx5 but but thought it would be better to have extra seats
@@RPercheiro we always do, until we realise we never use them. I don’t know if boring is the right word, but you can never be ‘exciting’ with them because speed / sensibility / other road users etc get in the way. I look for cars that are exciting at very normal speeds. These new breed hot hatches are just way, way too capable IMO.
Love the video, the concept of the petrol engine being a generator, works really well in Aus with large distances in between major cities and also love the phone wallpaper :P
I recently bought one from Tokyo prestige in Adelaide, had it shipped to Tassie, (think its the only one here) but very happy with it. Lovely to drive, esp in tassie which means hills everywhere, but torque gets up them easily. quick of the mark but getting 6L/100km around town easily without driving like a slowcoach. Love it, even my wife, who hates driving loves it.
Went and saw them today (30minute drive away for me). Looking at getting one now.Wasn't looking at getting a "new" car, but I shoot videos for Powertech Tuning here in Adelaide. They had one from TP. As soon as I saw it and went for a drive, it was always in the back of my mind. Think I'm going to pull the trigger. @@martinsmith6068 I have never seen one in Australia until I filmed a video for a car tuning channel with one. Thought, this is cool..... Picking up that exact same car this Friday!
I bought the newer model early this year, the Aura Note Nismo, set me back $45k, don't regret it at all. By far the best hatch I've ever driven, drives and looks much better than a corolla. I did speak with a Nissan executive at the roadshow last year and I asked him about the note, he said they were very close to bring this model in 2017 but have found that it wasn't feasible and Australia wasn't the market for it either. But he did admit that newer Aura Note Nismo would probably be feasible in the current market but Nissan HQ don't see the reason to sell these cars outside of Japan.
Love my x-trail epower, so I'd imagine this is real fun to drive. After 5k, 5.7L/100km, better than the quoted 6.1L - use B mode is my advice. Fingers crossed for long term reliability.
You forgot the TBTL factor on this one guys lol😂. From the way you described it Adam it sounds like Nismo E-power Note is the love child of the Renault Clio and the Honda Jazz. Have to admit if Nissan bought it out to Australia officially and I had the cash I'd definitely consider it especially since it'd be unique. Also with the safety features overview it looked like you were showing it as the prize for winning the show lol. A really enjoyable video guys and I suspected this would be today's car but wasn't sure. As always guys have a great weekend and I look forward to next week's videos as per usual 👍.
I walked passed one of these little gems the other day and had a good gawk at it. I live in a semi rural area so it was quite out of place to see but damn it's a cool looking car.
General rule, buy the absolute newest, low km version you can find. If you don't want sporty but want luxury, get the Autech version - the seats alone are so nice. Plus...early 1300km range and a refill might cost you $80 or so. That is nuts! It also looks like Nissan Australia have dumped plans to bring in the current model, which means super low km versions of the current body style are available for import and come with the Nissan ProPilot adaptive cruise control system. I've yelled at Nissan a few times now to bring this in, along with the Kicks, Serena, Elgrand and a few other cars as low volume specials, but they seem determined to shoot themselves in the foot. If they can source production from Thailand in RHD, then it'll make for a more compelling business case as they'll sell bucketloads, especially in a fuel sensitive market.
Nope, instead they'll bring in Jukes. Huge missed opportunity for Nissan Australia IMO. They are tanking hard here as a brand by trying to market mediocre econoboxes.
you should review the new version of the note. the note aura nismo would love to see a review of that car as they are starting to be imported into aus.
Have had a black Nismo S now for over a year, all Ive spent $s on is 91 fuel, [10,000km avg 5.0L/100 and better tyres with RE003s - to give it the traction and handling its capable of], a fantastic point and shoot car a hoot around town can hold its own on the motorway, cracking fun up a and down a winding mountain road, hugely practical, no rattles no issues. Was originally going to buy a Toyota hybrid but for the same $s why have vanilla when you can have a car that looks great menacing [in black] and makes you smile on every drive and an even broader smile at the pump.!!! Thinking about one ..do it !!
I reckon I would still get a Toyota hybrid, specifically a Touring WxB hybrid wagon that I can see there are some grey imports but still not many on the roads. Love a good wagon!
Was disappointed when they didn't bring them to the USA. I had the same NISMO seats in my Juke NISMO RS.. they are AMAZING. (rebranded Recaro Sportster of something like that). They are comfortable on long trips whilst being firm and grip you incredibly well. You don't slide around, unlike the awful seats in an WRX STI for example.
I liked this great review of the best car ever 😁 Only one question re the Renault involvement. This car was Japan only and still is. I believe that Renault has zero connection. Its all JDM Nissan and based on and around the Leaf tech. But im willing to listen if there is proof to the contrary 😃
I had 2017 model, awesome fuel economy, every week I was travelling 350 km + around town and whole year I just spent 500-600 on fuel. Recently I was in accident and a big toyota hit me and I was sandwiched from both sides, but not a scratch on me, it stopped very nicely, not even a jerk, saved me, though sadly it was written off. Thinking would buy its facelift model
Recently having watched your video The Night Cardigan. And owner of a 2009 bare bones Nissan Note. Damn straight I want on of these as next care. Living in Sheep Shagerstan … I mean New Zealand, imports everywhere in large numbers and parts easily available .
Brought a 2019 nismo note import 2022 it is fun safe car to drive no problems so far. Not to mention 25 km to 1 litre driving hard 30 to 35 km driving normal in sports mode and who know if I drove it in normal or eco mode
I had an incorrect understanding of what this car is the first time I watched this. There's a lot more petrol going on here than I thought there would be. The maths just doesn't work out. Nissan themselves even mislead people, and the UK banned their tv ads for it. 0:55 - "It's not connected to the wheels, that engine acts purely as a generator for the battery pack" 10:38 - Fast EV acceleration, then very shortly after the petrol engine takes over to perform what is being requested of the car. Don't know how I didn't pay attention to that the first time lol. The diagram Nissan provided is wrong. The engine can bypass the battery, and take a more direct path to the wheels when needed. They later changed the diagram to match reality. Also there is always an engine running in the background, and it's a 3 cylinder so it's unstable and rocks more than an even cylinder engine. It's like a conventional full-hybrid (non-plug-in) but less fuel efficient. So all that's really being said when he says it's just like an EV, like at 11:10, is the torque, I think. That instant acceleration (before the engine kicks in, since the battery is small and needs to stay charged). Also other stuff that conventional hybrids have.
Out if all the hybrids this is most closest to driving an EV until you get to certain speed. But that instant torque is addictive I know because I own one (non nismo)
@@chunkybeats79 - 11:05 - a PARTIAL* EV experience lol. But yea aside from me being mislead by Nissan marketing and this video, it does primarily have that EV-torque off the go (unlike full hybrids), which is pretty sick. Though it will cost ya more in fuel to launch off like that, and more wear on the tyres. At least with full EVs, it's not fuel (though hopefully one can charge NOT via some certain fast chargers, because they're like, the same price as fuel, which is crazy). Apparently full hybrids don't use as much fuel as this thing though, so it's a trade-off. But then, no hybrid is cheaper in the long-run compared to a regular internal combustion engine car, because the savings on fuel just take far too long to accumulate due to how much more expensive the purchase price is for Hybrids.
This car is awesome! Thanks for showing me how good it is. I'm currently driving a Fiesta ST and while it's fun and very quick I've always wanted an EV and this just ticks all the boxes, it's affordable, not that more expensive than my Fiesta. Unlike the leaf it's not range limited or double the price plus would be faster and more fun and while I love Hondas, this looks quite good for a Nissan. I've also considered the outlander phev which has a similar EV generator drive system but it's AWD systems fail at the worst times when driving off road so I'm excited to see how the new GWM Tank hybrid reviews off road.
Awesome review. Am looking at one of these myself. I would love a follow-up review of the 1.6 Manual version if you can find one over there. Because I am still undecided which way.
Love these cars but real world economy is higher (up to 4-5L/100km) but the biggest problem overall, the price. I think these upper models are horrendously overpriced for what they are. They're priced at or above really good hot hatches or a decent used EV (Tesla 3, Kona, brand new MG4) can be had for ~$40k. If they were sold in Aus new, the used price would be far more reasonable and easier to trust the odometer. Major missed opportunity for Nissan not selling it here or offering an e-power leaf. These are undoubtedly an amazing super mini size hot hatch but they're just not worth the price. I'd never spend more than $20k for any spec upto a Nismo with ~$2-3k premium for a Nismo S. On odometers, Japanese sellers are notorious for winding back odometers when they know its being exported, don't buy without a certified odometer. The car most notorious for it being done to was Z11 cubes. There was no such thing as a Z11 cube with 50k lol, they were well used family hacks that got driven regularly. Easier to just assume when looking at a Z11 that the odometer is twice as high.
Anybody that hasn't driven one of these do yourselves a favour and try it out. My reaction the first time I drove one was exactly like this complete surprise And joy.
@@s0ner01J i drive them through my work, owning one doesn't suit what I need in a car but I'm constantly trying to convince my wife she needs one so I can drive it regularly.

@@Mattalot97 I'm from Auckland NZ and I've got the manual version of this called Nismo S. It is so awesome to drive as it's fast and very economical. Initially, I was eyeing for the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Hatchback but since I still want the driving experience of a manual car and after many comparison and careful consideration with other sporty little cars, I chose this awesome car and one of the advantages is that I don't have to spend money from buying a hybrid battery someday. I'm satisfied and I enjoying it much so far. Btw, mine is all black and it looks like this ruclips.net/video/0f5IS0kSaEc/видео.html
This over performing little nugget is my daily in my dream 3 car garage, along side an NA2 NSX-R and a V12 Toyota Century equipped with the six speed auto. That's my happy place😊
Was debating between one of these or a GR Yaris ended up going with the Yaris but it was a close toss up with how much less the Note cost. Main contributor was the import problem and parts availability
i hope this video doesn't push up the prices too much. I personally imported the same model in the black and loved the car to bits. hope to see more on the road
hmmm mine doesn't have that arm rest in the center. That would have been nice. Having a sti, evo and others I find this little rocket heaps of fun without the fuel consumption
Great little city runabout. I'm not sold on the hybrid approach though.. either ICE or EV makes the most sense as why would you want the complications and associated maintenance of both.
One benefit is that the e-Power is pretty light (1250kg). In comparison the Leaf is 300kg more. The Note batteries are tiny, basically a PS5 sized box under each front seat…you get the EV experience without the weight downside
The e-power system of Nissan is not available in the USA. It is available in Mexico. The base idea is great. The model I have an interest in is the Nissan Kicks e-power. I am a US citizen and a permanent resident of Mexico. The Nissan Kicks in Mexico has only a 2 KwH battery and no plug-in. I figure it can go about 7 Km on battery alone. A larger battery and charging from home electricity option would convert my interest into a sale. This seems to me to be a less complex hybrid. The local Nissan dealer in Mexico sells both the Kicks and the X-Trail models as e-power. In the USA, X-Trail is known as Rogue.
Liked the idea of these for years. But with tax breaks on novated leases for ev, hard to justify this over something like an MG4 which is a good drive (limited short suburban test drive).
I've purchased the 2022 E13 Nissan note e-power model and ill tell you right now that its a game changer compared to the E12 models. So much more modern styling and tech. I didnt look into getting the nismo version as its too low for my liking
Is it easy to get in and out of? I have to consider my old mum if I'm to buy one, our old golf was no good in that respect but it's not just about seat height, some SUVs are pretty awkward compared to others too.
AFAIK all the ones in Australia are e-Power hybrid, which means they’re either the 80kw base version or the 100kw S version. Neither has CVT or chain drive 😀 the diff is driven off the electric motor via gears.
It’s kind of cool, Japanese car builders in the 80s and 90s had all sorts of fun affordable “sporty” cars now they are quite boring unless you have access to gtr supera money. Hope this is a sign of a some cool zippy cars moving forward.
I've always had half an eye on these things but grey imports in Australia are a real pain from an insurance perspective... Most mainstream insurers won't touch them and the few that remain will bend you over a barrel. Would be good if you could cover off on these issues in these videos!
@@KevinSan88Sure, and if they ever decide not to insure you, hit you with a big increase, or close down their operations (like Just Car did in 2017), who would you switch to? This is a huge problem with grey imports in Australia and needs to be talked about, lest people go along and get themselves something and find they are stuck with one or (if they're lucky) two captive insurers.

Average for 5000km with a long roofbox,
was 15 km per liter. Very good cars. The S models I have imported get sold in minutes of being advertised.
I’d love to park this in my garage next to my isf for shits-&-giggles.
@@j3str15 I’ll post a pic up with the note parked next to my ISF 👍
Completely agree with the need of less powerful, more affordable and preferably lighter hot hatches. I have a Hyundai i30n performance and I’m going to sell it because I can’t really drive it fast anywhere a part from a race track. I’ve even been to court for speeding (empty road in the middle of nowhere and I was the only person in the car). Also love the Nissan e power concept, great transition solution before full ev.
Yeah I just got the i30n and it's too fast for the roads 😂
These super fast hatches are actually super boring. They’re not fun in the real world. If you can get away with an MX5 they’re polar opposites, absolutely brilliant.
@@mattdebyl8806 I wouldn't call them boring, just a bit wasteful and not the best suited for 90% of your average driving (especially in the city, it's actually surpringly good for long trips). I still love the car. I was very close to buy the mx5 but but thought it would be better to have extra seats
@@CRUMB. if you find a very good road try the full N mode, it's amazing
I absolutely LOVE IT, trying to convince my daughter to get one..but she hates the styling.
Here are two videos we did on it!

Never seen one in UK
Fingers crossed for long term reliability.
b mode on this are different. It will turned the most power out. So it’s not for saving fuel on the nismo S.
Since i hearers about it i m trying to get one but in our country it gets expensive after tax
TBTL factor is high with this in my opinion!
I have been tbinking about moving on from the Toyota Crown scene into one of these... very cool little hatch with ridiculous fuel economy
Had one for a few months now, love it and fun to drive.....
I love how you introduce the sponsors. So down to earth. 😊
Consider setting up membership. I’m interested.
I walked passed one of these little gems the other day and had a good gawk at it. I live in a semi rural area so it was quite out of place to see but damn it's a cool looking car.
I think it's pretty impressive a hybrid hothatch I'm shocked I'm looking for a good hybrid car I'm definitely considering the nissan note.
Just what I needed from my favourite car reviewer! Thanks heaps mate.
Cheers mate!
I only heard about this car for the first time recently, and I wasn't sure what to think about it. But y'know what? You've convinced me!
p.s. juke nismo wen
I LOVE the aesthetic of this car. Like it's begging you to go have fun with it.
Ok, this is perfect... I want this car. It's beautiful AND it will have Japanese reliability.
Do you know if it’s compatible with the ethanol based cheaper fuel?
I reckon I would still get a Toyota hybrid, specifically a Touring WxB hybrid wagon that I can see there are some grey imports but still not many on the roads. Love a good wagon!
Here in NZ they are between $14000 to $18000 for a 2016 to 2017 then up to $20000 for 2018 onwards,so good value over here
Great review I would seriously consider one if the opportunity arose, I also gave a like just for the Japanese game show style safety features
i’m from japan and the game show part was the most fun
Its a tuned Nissan Leaf with a generator thats Awesome! Always loved the Leaf its a fun drive!
Being a modern Nissan, it certainly won't be the best car ever, but still I'm keen to listen on and learn what's good about it.
Yes! Been waiting for someone to review one of these. I've been looking at them for a while.
Hope you like it!
Now that you driven and given it the thumbs up. Please test the car that replaced it the Nissan AURA.
Love the video and I never knew this existed. But also you are the first person I have ever heard call the Tesla Model S Plaid the "played" 😂
picked one up 4 days ago. Awesome fun to drive! Can't believe Nissan aren't bringing this into Australia
I wish we got these en masse in Australia, seems great, will stick with my i20N for the relative simplicity of the ownership experience 🚙
Definitly would buy one. Going to search for one right away
How have i never heard of this?i LOVE IT😍😍😍😍😍😍
I have the manual version of this car called Note Nismo S in black, very economical, reliable and fun to drive. Definitely a great car.
I liked this great review of the best car ever 😁 Only one question re the Renault involvement. This car was Japan only and still is. I believe that Renault has zero connection. Its all JDM Nissan and based on and around the Leaf tech. But im willing to listen if there is proof to the contrary 😃
Haha what a cool little beast. As I recently ordered a z nismo I've been binging nismo content haha.
You make a good point, exterior spare parts will be difficult to source as it is an import.
That was the best voiceover you've done yet! ようあれぬmゔぇろね
8:36 looks like the boot floor lifts to be flush with the folded seats
I've been looking at these along with some other JDM gems. I just can't nudge the trigger hard enough. They do look awesome though.
I loved mine. Just found it had a really odd power band, driving around the city required a lot of work on the manual
I had an incorrect understanding of what this car is the first time I watched this. There's a lot more petrol going on here than I thought there would be. The maths just doesn't work out. Nissan themselves even mislead people, and the UK banned their tv ads for it.
0:55 - "It's not connected to the wheels, that engine acts purely as a generator for the battery pack"
10:38 - Fast EV acceleration, then very shortly after the petrol engine takes over to perform what is being requested of the car.
Got the Qashqai E Power! Love it! Gives the Nissan giggle! Don't need a Tesla.
Awesome review. Am looking at one of these myself. I would love a follow-up review of the 1.6 Manual version if you can find one over there. Because I am still undecided which way.
Also worth noting that the Nismo S e-power has more power and torque than the regular Nismo e-power
Hope this car comes to the global market soon. 👍🏼🌎
I really want to get one but there's not many around to test drive. Did you end up buying one?
@@s0ner01J i drive them through my work, owning one doesn't suit what I need in a car but I'm constantly trying to convince my wife she needs one so I can drive it regularly.

I almost bought one, only thing that turned me away was the lack of a manual option.
Ended up buying a new Daihatsu Copen GR Sport instead 😂
Sucks that there is an actual manual one without the ev side. Just not eligble for import into australia.

Funny thing is I saw one of these at the local Target store in Burnie, Tasmania today. I thought it was a jazzed up Leaf.
Was debating between one of these or a GR Yaris ended up going with the Yaris but it was a close toss up with how much less the Note cost. Main contributor was the import problem and parts availability

hmmm mine doesn't have that arm rest in the center. That would have been nice. Having a sti, evo and others I find this little rocket heaps of fun without the fuel consumption
I really love the blue accents on it 🤣 I feel it breaks up the red especially when you get the all black models.
Maintenance lol yeah right every year it needs an oil change and filter change cost me $30 every 10,000 kms
Another awesome review thanks for all the great videos you do. Could you please review the W204 c class Mercedes Benz that is behind Jim in the video.
Thanks so much Matt.

Main issue will be trying to sell it when you've had enough without losing too much $ (as per most imports)
Ez profit if you want to flip them. People are flogging the standard nismo trim for 30k. They cost like 22k tops to import and comply.
The original Note always felt like a MPV & continued like that until now. It looks like its shrunk in the wash.
Looks great Adam, only thing the road noise would annoy me.
Off to scour eBay......great review of a car Ive never heard of.
The hybrid version was not offered in Canada .. only the crappy broken CVT version
The length of a piece of string is twice the length from the centre to one end😁
Is it easy to change the infotainment system? Why don't they give language options?
im considering one... i saw a 2018 for 1,000,000 yen here in japan. 47km on it
Liked the idea of these for years.
@justice4g not sure if it is easy for older people but I have no struggles. You'd have to view one yourself and try

Are there different models? Just looked at Facebook marketplace and you find descriptions that list it as CVT, one even mentioned chain drive.
It looks like the sort of car I’m looking for. If only they were more widely available and supported outside of Japan.

I've always had half an eye on these things but grey imports in Australia are a real pain from an insurance perspective... Most mainstream insurers won't touch them and the few that remain will bend you over a barrel. Would be good if you could cover off on these issues in these videos!
I have a Note Nismo, it's insured with Shannons. IIRC premium was $900, which for Sydney is about normal for a regular car.
@@KevinSan88Sure, and if they ever decide not to insure you, hit you with a big increase, or close down their operations (like Just Car did in 2017), who would you switch to?
