  • In this video, we take a look at a really nice 7 inch IPS Touchscreen display for the Raspberry Pi,
    The Pi4 mounts to the back of the display and is connected over HDMI plus this screen has built-in speakers! With a resolution of 1024x600 it’s not the highest resolution but this works very well and will allow you to create a portable Raspberry pi4 if you add a battery pack.

    The USB plug that offers touch actually powers the unit as well (5v red pin/black pin, touch is the green/yellow wires). The GPIO power cable is redundant and NOT needed to power the screen. You only need that USB plug, and the HDMI ribbon cable. This frees up your GPIO for an ICE cooler running at 5v.

    I have the same screen and a Pi 3B on it. You can change the volume if you press + and brightness via -. The touch screen works out of the box, but only the left mouse button. This requires one USB 2.0 port, so 3 ports remain open. The native resolution should always be set as the resolution. If you switch off the screen, the Pi continues to run.

    I have this screen, love it! I've been using it for about the last 6 months and it's been flawless so far :) One difference from the one you show and the one I have (you may have a more recent model) is the small "touch to Pi" lead that you have wasn't included. Instead, they sent a short 3" Type A to MicroUSB cable which sticks out from the side connector of the monitor, so it's not quite as compact as the setup you have here. Just an FYI.

    i got similar screen, paid for it 32 bucks on aliexpress, and its great, but its a version without speakers + it has 2 hdmi ports, one on the back, and one on the side, and its shipped with a mini hdmi to hdmi adapter that just fits perfectly rpi hdmi port, so theres no cable basically, i love this thing, wish there was something like that for 100 bucks or something, thats 13-15 inch, so i could make myself a mini laptop with rpi 400, or like a controller board thats very slim for old laptop screens, cuz currently the controller boards are rather thicc, so it would be a rly chunky laptop
    Something that low power, thats enough for some yt and watching like netflix or something, and doing some office work, that rly sounds nice for me.

    Hey! I get that this is a (relatively speaking) old video and things have moved on a bit, but I'm wondering if there are any recommended equivalents in 2024? UK-based. The key points for me:
    - The rear mounting, so that the cables etc are behind and not poking 20 miles out of the side/top/bottom. The best I've got so far (at 5 or 7 inch display size) was top-mounted connections and the display included a HDMI "U" adapter. Not bad, but still extended beyond the profile of the PCB the thing was mounted on.
    - Still cheap enough to be considered "project level" - but not complete rubbish. It'd be for a RetroPie project.
    - I don't care about touchscreen.

    I bought a very similar monitor to this, but it has a wheel for brightness and volume which is really nice and simple. But the resolution is just too low (especially with onscreen text and icons), and the aspect ratio is bad for a lot of modern content. Playstation 4 games only take up the middle 60% of the screen. I'm going to sell this one and get a 1280x800 screen.

    I was hoping to see you run the tearing test like you did with the 5in screen: ruclips.net/video/xcwqIxySFPg/видео.html
    You even stated in that video that "whenever I get a new screen for the raspberry pi I always check out this video on youtube".
    I wanted to pull the trigger on this, especially since Amazon has a $10 coupon currently, but I suspect it has some unpleasant tearing, which contributed to this being a "great" device rather than warranting the "awesome" rating.
    Plus, you even mentioned at 7:58 that changing the brightness doesn't introduce any extra screen tearing than you'd normally see on a screen with the Raspberry Pi given the drivers... That doesn't inspire much confidence.

    I have two of these running portable battery powered Retropie consoles with VMan’s image. They are excellent. Two things to add:
    There is a physical button for volume control and it works fine. So the volume is controllable through both hardware and software. It is the up button. Hit that once and then you can use the up/down buttons to change volume.
    The GPIO cable connection is not required with the latest versions of the screen supporting power through the same USB plug ETA used to “enable touch”. That port also provides power through the Pi to the screen. As long as you feed the Pi with a good power source it works excellent.

      There is another problem when adding active cooling. When you plug the power on the display to the GPIO on the Pi 4, you are only left with 3v power coming out of the Pi. I have the same display and I purchased a small fan that ETA Prime recommends on the video of the 5" display that attaches to the heatsink that goes on top of CPU but when I plugged to 3v power I get an under voltage warning on the Pi 4. I'm new playing around with Pi 4's so there's probably a quick fix. I just haven't found it. Maybe by adding a power management hat or something.

    • @DigitalJedi
      @DigitalJedi 4 года назад

      Cpu seems to be facing away from the screen, so height of the cooler shouldn't be much of an issue. If the mounting screws you use are too long to allow it to mount to the screen directly, I'd image a solution with standoffs or washers + longer screws would work decently.

    Two things I'd love to make with this: 1) one of these "cyber-deck" things that are all the rage these days and 2) DIY car head-unit, probably would need to be double-height unless you want to build some sort of popout/folding mechanism. Might even be able to combine the two into one project, make it so it can be easily removed from the car and used standalone with a built-in battery (which could also allow you to keep it powered in the car while the car is off without draining your 12V battery).

    I ordered this screen. It is very well made and works great. It looks amazing. The only problem I have is that the Pi4 overheats so easily, and since this display uses both the GPIO power pins, figuring a way to power the fan without a bunch of soldiering is a challenge. I saw an earlier video of you doing a fan shim but I am concerned about non-isolation of fan and display. If anyone has a solution here, let me know. For now, I ordered a GeekPi top mounted full body heat sink w/ optional fan to see how much that will help. The screws go in from the top so you can screw down to the stand-offs on this display.

    The only issue I have with a Raspberry Pi, be it one that shouldn't matter to most people, is the hideous green PCB that its built on. Every accessory for it that uses a separate PCB is practically always black like with pretty much every other piece of modern hardware with only very few exceptions like components that come inside a housing already. I just wish that they release a version with a black PCB, hopefully in the future.

      I've seen big bunny on so many screens now I can use it as a decent benchmark... I know how it *should* look, and can spot a poor display pretty quickly. It's just convenient for RUclips content because it's freely licensed, no copyright to worry about. Same idea with 3D printers and that tugboat... everyone is familiar with it, and it does a good job of exposing poor designs.

    • @NijiDash
      @NijiDash 4 года назад

      flutterbrony The Wacom LCD tablets do cost a pretty penny (starting at around 550 where I live), and AFAIK there aren’t any LCD drawing tablets out there that use a Wacom pen specifically (not counting tablet computers like Surface Pro in this case, just the LCD drawing tablets that require another computer).
      You could consider something like the XP-Pen Artist 12 or a HUION Kamvas Pro 13 if you’re open to alternatives. They’re both priced around the 200-250 ballpark. I don’t have experiences with these myself, but I’d recommend just reading the reviews to get an idea. Don’t just rely on Amazon reviews though, since there are lots of fake reviews out there on many articles lately.
      Hope this helped! /)

    please make your next touchscreen RPi 4 be for a 1920x1080 screen, or a sub $20 1280x720 screen.

  • @TheOleHermit
    @TheOleHermit 4 года назад +2

    Buyers beware, this looks nearly identical to my EVICIV 7" touchscreen, purchased a year ago. It also has the RPi logo on startup. Except mine didn't ship with the assorted cables and doesn't have the cool power and USB headers, so I wasted money trying to find cables that didn't stick out so far, but they still do. :-(
    Furthermore, although the EVICIV looks the same as the Longrunner 7" touchscreen and enclosure, their protective enclosure requires serious modifications in order to fit the EVICIV touchscreen. |:{
    To be clear, I'm not saying that this touchscreen has the same issues, because I don't know. The cabling is much cleaner on this model. I'm only suggesting that you may want to consider how important the enclosure is and whether one is available. I wish that I had purchased both as a package deal.
    Having said that, the touchscreen works great. Although it is only rated @1200 x 600, it displays 1920 x 1080 just fine alongside my 50" 4K TV. I suspect the same is true with this model.
    I'm running my RPi4 with a heat sink & small PWM fan, which is also powered via GPIO. Whenever I power the RPi, USB SSD, fan, & touchscreen from the same wall wart adapter, sometimes the RPi complains about low power by displaying the lightning bolt, usually during high SSD activity. So, I turn off the 7" display and use only the 4K TV (no problem).
    You gets whatchya pays fer.

    That is a great screen for the raspberry pi but the way the metal legs are screwed to the ends of the screen's PCB just plain screams to me that is should have better support to be really useful. I can see kids breaking it the moment they get their hand on them even if you don't intend to have them using it. (And let's be real, if you have kids you know they are attracted to screens just like they are attracted to candy.) I can see myself building a small arcade with it though. it would streamline the cable management inside a lot.
