While in English we could say "four oh five" or "five past four" for 4:05, Japanese only has one way of saying the time. So:
4:05 = yoji gofun
4:30 = yoji-han OR yoji sanjuppun
4:45 = yoji yonjuugofun

Sorry i haven't been studying much but i'm back and i have to catch up
Is there also another case when you use "yo" instead of "yon" when you want to say "4"?
Or is it only with the time?
Hi, thank you very much for your comment.
For 5:30, you can say go-ji han. Go-ji is 5 o'clock and han is thirty or half.
We have lessons for how to say time in Japanese on our website so please check it out when you have time.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Hi,
it could depend on the situations, but we do use the 24-hour system. In casual conversations where the other person is in another country, we can easily assume whether it's AM or PM. But, if you want to specify, 8 a.m. is "gozen 8-ji" and 8 p.m. is "gogo 8-ji".
JapanesePod101,com
Also there is a way to say in the morning or in the afternoon - 午前 (gogo) / 午前 (gozen)
No mean to be rude
The Kanji for Afternoon is: 午後 (gogo)
And Morning is: 午前 (gozen)
Hi,
we do use "shi" for 4, like "shi gatsu" meaning April (Month 4) and "shi ki" meaning "four seasons".
Hope you won't get too confused ;)

It kind of makes sense after a while. At first it seems weird because in English are building blocks to create words is our alphabet, and Japanese uses sounds (Hiragana and Katakana represent these sounds) Then with those sounds put together in certain ways becomes a word similar to our alphabet. The main difference is that once you put the sounds together changes the Hiragana or Katakana into a shorter, more compact character aka Kanji. for example: ima - いま in hiragana changes to - 今 in Kanji.
Thank you for the lesson, highly appreciated😁👌💜💜💜
ありがとう。😇
The scripts used in writing (hiragana, katakana, kanji) are all part of Japanese, so to answer your question : yes, it's all the same. If you study Japanese, you can communicate with anyone else who speaks/studies it too.
These quick grammar lessons are awesome!
ありがとうございます。😊😊😊
You'll have to get used to it. Brevity isn't the focus of kanji, anyways - it's the meaning in it that is. You wouldn't notice without someone pointing it out, but the characters are intricately made to resemble its meaning.
And this is coming from a mandarin speaker, so take heed :)
Currently in Japanese class and this is helpful👍
No, 4 o'clock is always "yoji" :)
You're welcome :)

Nan is the first kanji I have ever learnt.

Hi,

Good luck!

How about the hours in the afternoon? Does it goes on like 13 jii? Or something else? I just discovered your channel, and now i feel so curious! Thank you so much for all thoses videos!
You could say juusan-ji or ichi-ji. Either way works! :)
Thank you for your comment.

How do you say things like 11:15, 2:55, 9:17 and things like that? And do expressions like "quarter to nine" or "half past 3" exist in Japanese?
+Kira Suzuki Hello,
Thank you for posting.
11:15 JYUICHIJI JYUGOFUN
2:55 NIJI GOJYUGOFUN
9:17 KUJI JYUNANAFUN
quarter to nine KUJI JYUGOFUN MAE
half past 3 SANJI HAN

For the time, how do you say like 4:05 or 4:30 4:45 etc.?
What I can now say from these videos(and more=D): すみません。何時ですか。Translation: Excuse me, what time is it?
On the flipside, you could say that English is difficult because it has so few characters. I believe there are around 8000 different "language sounds" that can be made with these characters (src: Human Japanese). The Japanese character comprise exactly 110 of these language sounds, and no more.
In English, the entire meaning of a sentence can be turned upside down just by changing the order of words. In Japanese, this is not possible - it only changes emphasis a little (or so I have learned).
What about (example) 3:30; 3:15; 3:07; 3:38 etc???

Hi everyone! Thanks for posting all the great comments!!

Hi.
That's brilliant! It seems you have benefit ;)
JapanesePod101,com
oh, thank you so much. its really useful >
I'm Chinese kanji is easy for me
Japanese is not difficult when you compare it with Chinese. Each word is an individual character you need to remember. I live in Hong Kong and so far studying Chinese is killing me
I have another question. Let's say that you talk with japanese person who lives in another country.. or is traveling on a trip.. etc. I noticed that japanese people don't use the 24 hours system, so you can't say- it's 23 o'clock (which is a possible in my country, though not that commonly used), so.. how do you specify if it 8 o'clock on the morning or on the evening?
how about the minute ?? example 5:30 .
@Caramelle22 I actually don't think that you need am or pm, cause you automatically now whether am or pm is meant, right? I mean, who would wonder whether it's am or pm, when it's for example already evening? :)
what about am vs pm ?
Do I have to write the kanji or i can just write it in higarana. ?? Because i wrote it in higarana Version 😅
Question! How come there are alternative ways to say 4? Like why?? Yong? Shi? Why can't they just stick with Yong?
@BatmanLovesThemChickens In Japan Shi is considered a bad luck number because it means death, so yung is said instead.
Kanji isn't weird, it's just different :D to the Japanese I bet American English writIng is weird :3
Why they didn't show the gogo(pm) and gozen(am)? o.o
in a way, it's much easier than english... it just what you're used to I guess :)
どもうありがとう!
hey hey!!!
どもうありがとう is wrong
どうもありがとう
and reply is どういたしまして
douitashimashite
what is copulla?
is all the japanese the same lets say that i study hiragana, can i talk to someone that only knows katakana?
because it's different?
So how would I way something like 4:34
ANIMEBEAST27 U TRICKED ME
Technically, yes. But in common speech, NEVER, as "Shiji" sounds very similar to "Shijin", which means "dead person." Therefore, it is to be avoided at all costs.
Im hear because of naruto and I recognize 8 9 and10 from the show
ima ninja desu ka!

Ema nanji deska ??
Ima! If you need any extra help I have some grammar videos over on my channel you might like!
Why use shi as number 4 if your not gonna use? It's really confusing remembering numbers. Learning a language is supposed to be easy and straight forward not difficult.
last comment was 11 months ago we’re still studying
Where I can learn write and type japan cuz I'm deaf.
there are subtitles to the video
If you want to type in Japanese, for example:, (日本はかわいいます.)There is something called Google Japanese IME. I'm really sorry for the 3 year late response.
Who is the man, is he japanese???

@@ostracostio64 I have no idea I made this comment 6 years ago
I wish the Japanese woman would slow down, when pronouncing words and sentences. After all we are beginners not professionals ;-)
@WickedRob1 -_-
lol
二十時四十五分
20.45
Why can't Japanese have one script? It would be so easy instead of trying to remember all three styles.
pisses me off how overly complex it is lol
(sorry for romaji but I don't have a Japanese keyboard on the rubbish phone I'm using atm)
ANYWAY
If 9 is *ku ji*
is 9:30 *ku san jyuu ji* or is it *ku ji san jyuu*
it's ku ji han or ku ji san jyu pun
i love this! also @japansocietyNYC
