Modern people have education and resources to set up a home quickly without a dowry. In the olden times, people lacked education, good paying jobs to collect the resources to set up a home, so this responsibility was put upon the parents of the bride and groom, to give the young couple a strong head start, so when the baby comes along, mother can afford to stay with the child instead of running around trying to find money , or food
