  • We're going to visit Daddy today! His apartment building is nice. There are little sculpted bushes outside. I put my Hot Wheels on a fun ride though a little box before I go though the second door of his apartment building. Then we go to his living room. All his friends dress the same. They are so funny. Dad says he is coming home soon. He talks about his four friends who will give him a ride home. They are all named Goldberg! Sometimes one of the Goldbergs is there. He wears a tie and carries a business case.
    Then, Daddy has to go to gym class. He said it is for grown-ups. Mom tells us it is time go and we get back into our Jeep and bounce home. She says Daddy will be able to play again soon. Mom says when Dad is done with grown-up-sleep-away school, we're all going to Dorny Park and Wildwater Kingdom! YAY
    Big thanks to ZeroVersionTwo for supplying this Jeep Grand Cherokee for us to review. Check out his RUclips page here:

    It actually is pretty jeepy. Despite it being unibody it does have a solid front and came with the 4.0L. That's just as much of a jeep as an XJ.

    • @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
      @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 4 года назад +12

      Yeah, it's an XJ with rear coils and more fanciness (potential points of failure?). I had one years ago, too beat for a street driver (girl that sold it to me hit a deer in it and bent some subframe stuff) but still only had like 110,000 on it. It had the 318. I put a 3" lift, 33s, 4.10:1s, a rear locker, and cutout flares on it, straightened it up as best I could, and used it for a woods rig for a long time. It'd do anything a similarly equipped XJ or YJ would, and was very nearly as 'Trail-Rated' as an equivalent TJ, while sounding positively evil through headers, collector mufflers, and short dumps.

      Jack Watters What? XJs are notoriously long-lived and capable 4x4s, what are you talking about, interior plastic quality? Haha! They even found a way to make late-90s Chrysler automatic transmissions last a long time, I guess through super low-rpm torque peaks, small-ish tires and light weight. XJ Cherokees are widely known for being hard to kill.

      @BigRedtheGinger 9 лет назад +6

      ***** I can kinda attest to that. I own a 96 with the 5.2 V8, and it's not too bad. 231k miles on it, original trans, but had to replace the governor and governor sensor(there's an old TSB on it), water pump(was original), front driveshaft(twice), alternator, and starter. Over 200k on everything that was replaced. It's a gas guzzler, but it IS a 5.2L V8 with Quadra-Trac full time 4x4, just like the one in the video(see 1:50. has 4 all time, neutral, and 4Lo, Lo is a central lock). Fun truck. A Cherrybomb Turbo muffler gives an extra 7hp and tq.

    • @gary_beniford
      @gary_beniford 9 лет назад +8

      ***** being a jeep they do require some maintenance but it's the engine that counts on reliability. sure they're gas guzzlers but I know a lot of people who would rather pay more for gas on a reliable old car than pay a 4 digit car payment+insurance on a new car with high MPG.

    • @BigRedtheGinger
      @BigRedtheGinger 9 лет назад +5

      Trust me, I'd rather have my ZJ than a brand new car. Things may not have broken at good times, but at least I'm not paying $500+ for a similarly equipped Jeep or other brand. I have the original window sticker, MSRP was $32k back then, $49k adjusted for inflation. I only paid $1900 for it on eBay. Plus, I can do most of the work myself(former pep boys mechanic of 3 years, currently a lube tech at a truck stop).

      The ZJ will do about 90% of what any other 4X will do - and without breaking. I know this because I have used lesser rigs to do the same thing, and have seen these ZJ's excelling. The other 10% would require some - or a lot - of modifications to most rigs. This Jeep is a great vehicle for getting you to the slopes, up any logging or forestry road, off any slippery boat ramp, or any other such conditions. Stump jumping, smacking into stuff, crawling over technicals? Foolishness.

    I have a 96, it was my grandmothers that I had to buy for KBB off of my aunts and dad (I didn't expect it for free but a good deal woulda been nice). It's been a good vehicle, it has needed some normal parts but they are all dirt cheap and easily done by myself, it's never left me stranded and in snow it's pretty much a tank. I don't do hardcore off roading but some getting to remote areas. It's never not gotten me to where I wanna go. It's not fast at all and gets shit gas mileage but I like it. I'll probably end up passing it on to my son in a few years when he turns 16. It has 120k on it and has always been garaged so it's in really good condition other than a few scratches from exiting a garage with the door being still down...twice.

    You forgot to mention the 4 link coil sprung suspension that is the exact same setup on the greatest and last real jeep of all time, the TJ Wrangler. This jeep out of the box will out destroy any and every vehicle made up to that point save for a unimog. Also the power coupled with the handling of the awd and V8 on top of the cushy suspension made for a real pleasure to drive in all conditions. Couple this to the soft leather of the black and tan grands with their infinity sound system and you really did have an amazing vehicle for it's time.

      I'm sorry, bud, we've got one of these, and your imagination is much greater than this vehicle ever was. The suspension felt horrible, real hard, but still had horrible body roll. The 4x4 system was full-time and would chirp the tires and shudder in turns, not because it had any power, though, just because the wheels were all stuck together. And power, the darn thing made piss poor power, she was clearly tuckered out doing 75 on a highway. Now, it did have torque, enough torque to regularly break suspension and steering components if you were harsh on it, like flooring it on flat grass, y'know.

    I had a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; literally one of the best vehicles out there. Fuel efficiency wasn't great, but I managed to get 27.3 mpg on the highway. It had the 4.0, so the engine was indestructible. I took it off roading and I was not nice to her, yet the only thing that needed done was an alignment and a new front drive shaft (it was the original driveshaft). I rear ended a Ford and the only part of the front that caved in was the headlight (plus a bit of the hood and passenger front fender), but the headlight still functioned. Hell, the engine ran better after that. I eventually totaled by falling asleep at the wheel and because of how tough these Jeeps are, I was 100% fine. No injuries or concussions. Not even a bruise.
    TL;DR: Get these with the 4.0 Inline six and you will be happy

    Owner of a 96 Bronco here, i can say its a hell a lot more durable than any Cherokee from the 90's!
    A lady driving a Camry hit me head on at 40mph and other than a bent bumper, dented hood and broken headlight the bronco suffered no damage on the frame. She didn't even deploy the airbag, cant say the same about her vehicle...

    This was my first car and it was an absolute tank. I got it with 168000 miles and drove it until the thing all the way to 396000. Transmission was fucked but you could still depend on it starting every time. And if you really needed to get somewhere you could do it but you’d be in 2nd gear the whole time.

    My parents have a 96 they bought used when I was like 10. Still have it and still purring like a kitty cat with well over 300k on it. No engine or transmission troubles body is perfect with only the top of the cab having the clear coat peeled off and minor surface rust showing and then recently my dad backed into a tree and put a small dent in the tail gate 😅 poor guy was kicking himself. Interior is near perfect with only one or two small cracks in the door panels where you rest your arms. Has been totaled from being front ended twice. Had to have the front differential fixed from being hit along with a few other small things. Couple cosmetic things like new front grille and fixed /repainted fender where it was hit. So aside from uncontrollable and unpredictable circumstances it has been pretty much perfect.

    Very funny video but I'm pretty sure these things and xj Cherokees might be some of the toughest vehicles out there. I've seen these things at the badlands off road park literally beaten like a rented mule and keep going. The 4.0 liter gets decent mileage and last forever and the V8s are cast iron head and block pushrod engines that didn't make a ton of power but a lot of torque in a light weight cherokee were pretty fast. The 98s were the only ones with the 5.9 and it made 245 hp not 230. Talk to anyone that owns an old grand cherokee and you won't find many that don't like them.

    ZJ rocks, and you are wrong because 5.9 L V8 makes 245 HP its not the same. Now the 5.2 L V8 with transfer case NP-249 the one on the video doesnt have Low Lock transfer case, just with the NV-249. Between 1996 to 1998. Now the SE basic model V8 5.2 L came with rear d44 for real and rear lsd. then in laredo and limited they used a rear d44 in v8 models but was a different d44 named as HD D44A. Now I think your vids are funny but they dont show the real deal of the car. I have a ZJ 1997 Limited 5.2 L V8 with 30 inch tires, d35 lsd rear, NV-249 Full Time transfer case, CAI, Trush Welded muffler, 1 inch transfer case drop, 3 inch body lift and some other extras. At stock its a really good off road vehicle very capable and good flexing. And with this mods will helps a lot more. If you go and climb with an XJ a ZJ will do it same way or better.

    The only bad thing about these were the exhaust manifolds on the 4.0 and the garbage AWD NP249 Quadratrac 2 tcase. Other than that.. greatness. Look at the interior and look how well its aged compared to other vehicles of that time. The interior quality was good too, maybe not quite BMW, Lexus or Honda good.. but right up there.

    Best vehicle Chrysler ever put on the road! I love my 1996 ZJ , it’s got 195,000 on the clock and has an amazing number of stock parts still on it! Runs the 318 V8 , not the most powerful engine ever but it’s awesome strength and reliability have amazed me over and over again. Through years of abuse and neglect this Jeep just keeps coming back for more! I don’t think Jeep ever made anything nearly as good!

    I remember this car from when I was much younger. Someone in my family had it, V6, with the leather trim. They had it for a while. Pretty smooth (and glutton, I can imagine). You did not mention the crazy wobbling and thrashing of the back suspension. Maybe because you never sat in the back.

    I grew up we had a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It was an absolutely amazing Alaska vehicle for a family of five. For a family SUV it handled Alaskan dirt roads extremely well. For some perspective the dirt roads would get so bad that people would literally drive off the road in the ditch rather than the actual road itself. The Jeep Grand Cherokee handled everything. We gave it to my cousin when it had over 200,000 miles on it.

    '98 Grand Cherokee Laredo was my first car, it was bought new and handed down through the family, never saw a week of rest and didn't care. I went to my first movie in it and almost twenty years later I parked it perfectly with three wheels because my front left flew off because the guys who rotated my tires didn't tighten shit; makes you appreciate the full spare. You could torture the thing and it'd survive as long as you respected it's limits. Still running, recently sold the '98, solid as fuck SUV.

    Jeep was unibody since 1984 and the Cherokee XJ. Besides, frames didn't do much back in the day. Just look at the 'tough' 90s full frame trucks folding like accordions in the IIHS overlap crash test.

    Another one who found this via Jalopnik.
    My father had a 97 Grand Cherokee Limited with the I-6 for about 10 years. He loved that car, it was loaded, even had heated leather seats. The Jeep was actually a pretty practical commuter for him, considering he lives in Buffalo, NY. The Jeep's AWD got him home on many occasions when others were stranded. It was also very comfortable, and handled very well for an SUV, better than any Explorer or Blazer. And that 4.0 I-6 is indestructible.
