    I don't even sharpen shears yet, mostly knives and tools, but one can learn so much about sharpening in general by watching Bonnie. I'd love to get trained by her on shears one day.

    I take pride in getting razor edges on knives, axes, cleavers and chisels, but scissors are a whole different universe. Thanks for the educational demo! Especially interesting is the machine you use (and how you use it).

    Your videos are a treasure trove. I hand-sharpen knives using a TSPROF K-03 and a plethora of stones, also I have quite the collection of synthetic and natural stones for my straight razors, and I've been dabbling with (beveled) barber shears for the last three years. Usually it's all fine and dandy, but a couple of times those burrs on the ride line really eluded me so far. I also tried a little flat stropping with a pasted strop, at that time, and it solved the issue, but still.
    I alternate between edge and inner strokes, as in 10 - 20 passes on the edge with the shears mounted on the K-03 tray, then 4-6 light free-hand passes on the same stone laying flat on the table, then again with a finer stone until the 5-6K range, or a Naniwa 10K if it's a very hard steel.
    I noticed you do edge-trailing strokes on your stone for burr removal; on knives it would be better to do edge-leading strokes, as far as I know, but there's surely something that I am missing here? Thanks a lot for your answer, I still have A TON to learn and you're a lovely teacher!

      Some things I do because it's easier to teach. Are you keeping the pressure on the pivot? That's key.

    • @Bjornvetr
      @Bjornvetr Месяц назад

      @@BonikaShears Oh, I see, thanks! Anyway, I use steady pressure on the pivot, without sitting on it of course, and a tiny bit of torque, just a hint, to be sure to work on the actual edge. It's a straight razor habit that's hard to lose, I guess.
      Tonight I tried edge-trailing strokes on the inner edge, after sharpening the bevel, and it works better on mid-range and finer stone, as in 3K+, as opposed as the starting 600 stone that I use as a first step (if there aren't any chips to remove).
      I use hybrid synth / diamond stones, mostly, because they're way faster than synths, and they polish very nicely. Now I wonder about finishing shears on a belgian coticule. Maybe with harder steels... hmmm.

    What did shear sharpeners use prior to the invention of powered equipment? I imagine grindstones were used and the shears were simply held in hand without a jig of any kind

    Please excuse my ignorance as I’m mostly a cutlery sharpener! But is this basically a drill with a disc sander attachment that’s spongy? The equipment you’re using that is? Apologies I’m attempting to broadening my sharpening skills as barbers shears I’ve never done only ever kitchen scissors

    • @BonikaShears
      @BonikaShears  11 месяцев назад

      Funny you should say that. One time at our Sharpeners Jam, Jim Turner made such a device as a joke. It had a little stand and I think it won a prize in our contest for the funniest idea. But no one really tried to sharpen shears on it. I don’t think a 6” plate on a drill would be steady enough. We have a 1/8 hp Leeson motor with American made controller to get the correct torque.

      @@BonikaShears thanks for the reply and yes I’m guessing there would be a fair amount building involved to get it anywhere close to you’re sharpening machine which I might add they look very professional and ease to use on the road for mobile sharpening so beg my pardon I was just thinking out loud and I’m ever in the states I would love to come to one your training sessions ☺️

      In the southern United States a standard breakfast item to eat with eggs, bacon and toast is a hominy white corn cereal topped with butter and sometimes cheese. It is often served with shrimp at dinner and southern restaurants will have shrimp and grits on the menu. Growing up at my school cafeteria every Friday we would have fish and grits. It is the consistency of thick oatmeal and looks like cream of wheat but it is a little gritty and tastes like corn. What country are you from? If you come here for training I'll take you to Waffle House that serves grits 6 ways.
