Lack of homeownership is not the problem, the problem is the total lack of protection for renters. People are desparate to own a home at any cost because they dont want to be at the absolute mercy of landlords. Most other countries in Europe have rafts of protections for renters, giving them stability and certainty in their accommodation. We will never see this in ireland as long as the government is made up of landlords who can profit off this parasitism.
So Varadkar totally side steps the answer, spends the entire time talking utter waffle here. The question, are you going to build more houses and put a cap on rental increase, it's almost a simple yes or no answer, so for me Varadkar refusing to answer this, in any way, means more of the same, rents are going to continue to skyrocket and home ownership a pipe dream for most, bar the extremely well paid and well off. But i'll be surprised if anything really would change with Sein Fein either, they'll have to get in to power to prove this either way, politicians ultimately look after themselves
