The last time I was in Tokyo the guy I met there for work had been living there a few years with his girlfriend. So after I unpacked he picked me up from my hotel and said “I’m taking you to this awesome restaurant just down the block.” We walk a couple blocks and realize he’s taking me to Saizeriya. Not the most cultured meal, but at least we had free refills.
Dope AMA video! Jiyuna sharing gems of information on how Japan works as well as things we should keep in mind if we plan on visiting/staying there. Big ups on this great content.
as I'm waiting for the restrictions to be lifted for tourism to do my second trip to Japan this was refreshing and with great insights. In fact, first time I spent 10 days just in Tokyo and for the second trip the plan is to go to Osaka and get to know a bit more of the country outside of Tokyo. Great stuff as usual Jiyuna!
This is SO interesting. Thanks for being willing to open up about your real life time in Japan. My question How’s the night life in Tokyo? The same as say NYC?
Plot twist: people insist on speaking to Jiyuna in kindergarten English because he can't actually speak Japanese and they don't have the heart to tell him
To be fair, japanese people are really fascinated with convenience store food with how I see it in documentaries. So I could understand why the quality is above the usual compared to USA or any other place.
I remember my first time in japan and being very unfamiliar with the metro system (me being a scrub countryside mf). Asked for help each time I had to go somewhere just to make sure i dont f*ck up. Eventho in tokyo the rails were color coded, i wasnt sure and asked for confirmation. Thankfully people were really nice and helped me out. Hopefully in can go back to japan one day, it was really fun.
Dude, that stuff always worries me no matter what. You never know if there is something out of schedule or changed temporarily due to maintenance or something else and info might not be immediately available. I'm so paranoid about that stuff but learned to just not care and deal with getting lost after getting there.
Appreciate this video, very insightful & enjoyed hearing what you have to say! Maybe in a future Japan-living video, you can share you thoughts about some of the cities you've visited (I think a lot of people are unfamiliar with them outside of big ones like Tokyo, Osaka, etc.)
Where would be good places to stay/visit when in Japan? Also how long does it take to learn Japanese and how much would you say is comfortable to speak on a visit?
Thank you for making these videos! I like your grounded advice much more than the sensationalist 'Top 10 Things NOT to do in Japan' lists. I taught myself Hiragana and Katakana when I was a kid, but I've been studying hard the past few months the get to N5-N4 level so I can hopefully work there someday (on fighting games). If you could answer my question in a future video I'd be so grateful (and I'll draw your favorite character! Promise!). Do you have any advice for a foreigner who wants to work on fighting games in Japan? Do you know if it's possible to visit studios like Capcom, Arcsystem, or SNK as a tourist?
The answers to some of these questions are why I liked Okinawa. Most people speak English there and the people are very welcoming. Just gotta not be clueless.
Man that part about making your own food was too true. I tried making Japanese food after giving up on finding western ingredients over there only to give up on that too and go back to searching for western ingredients again (luckily I found a couple places before long). Japan, I love you with all my heart, but my stomach likes what it likes
"It's not racism, just stereotypes" Man, you've been out of the west for a long time. We call those micro-agressions these days and you should leverage your oppressed status.
Awesome video man! I've visited Japan three times now (starting in Osaka, Tokyo, and Fukuoka) and I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Really keen to go back! My question is do you think it's doable to settle in Japan without starting off as an English teacher? It seems that's the main point of entry for most but I'm curious about alternatives in your mind.
Someone in my family went there as a photographer. Not like to photograph Japan, he was just a guy you hire for weddings or product photos or whatever. I know it's not the same but a different family member went to China to do some kind of business admin for an electronics company. Both said they settled in very easily. However, my HS English teacher tried the JET program in the 00s and said it was the hardest thing she's ever done in her life and is why she was back to teaching English in Canada. A friend of mine did the version China has and said people were pretty disrespectful of him but most other expats working in other fields didn't get shit-talked nearly as much. It might be better now but there was a pretty low view of these programs in the past.
In my time living here in Hokkaido, when I go from my inaka which everyone is great, to Sapporo. I usually get approached by some old man, at least once each time I go, that yells at me. Very weird to me that you haven't had that happen once in 11 years. Are you a die-hard Tokyo person at this point, or do you see yourself moving to a quieter part of Japan that still has access to a big city?
Always enjoy these, it's fun to see others' takes on the foreigner in Japan issue. Are you interested in talking about being a US citizen and paying Taxes? I'm always jealous of my French friends who only have to file for Japanese taxes.
Speaking of getting rid of bulky trash, I once left my old busted bicycle unlocked one evening, and lo and behold, the Bike Fairy came and got rid of it for me in the night. Good luck riding a bike with no brakes.
As someone who only lived there for a few years, Jiyuna's spittin' with the trash thing. Probably like 20% of the reason I didn't stay long term, not even joking. It's not just a "lul Lazy Americans" thing either, because whenever my Japanese friends come to the states to visit they're always ecstatic that they can throw pretty much anything into whatever trash can they see. The older generation think it's weird but, meh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Totally agree, dude. You either adapt to the culture or never be accepted. You don’t go to another house and keep your shoes on if they ask you to take it off, do you? It’s out of respect, and if you can’t respect that, don’t expect to be respected in tandem. That’s entitlement. Idk what it’s like growing up in the West but I think I’ve been here long enough to get a proper picture of how it’s like and, honestly… People are entitled af. There is so very little respect that people have for each other. They talk about empathy here in the West a lot but I don’t think people know what that means or they’d be able to respect peoples’ needs (even if contrary to one’s own) instead of trying to change what everybody does just for them. While I’m not from there, in Japan, conforming to each others’ needs isn’t just customary - it’s basically mandatory. It can have its downsides but what makes Japan Japan isn’t anime. It isn’t manga. It’s the culture. And if you move there because of the former and not the latter, you don’t like Japan. You just like anime.
Can't believe anyone asked about dating. No need to get into specifics, but how has it been so far? Do japanese girls view foreigners badly? Should people just stick to finding other foreigners?
Dude i didn’t realise you lived in Japan! I used to live there too before the pandemic, and i’m planning to go back as soon as the borders reopen! Love the place 👊😎
I totally get that “being treated a certain way” thing. I’m mixed and don’t quite look enough like either races I guess. So when I speak Japanese/Korean to a native situation they will refuse to engage with me in that tongue lol.
honestly can't wait to go to Japan again. prior to lockdown i travel there at least once yearly and have always had so much fun in UFO catchers lol. it's like every city i go i always look for game centers for those. i got to say that trash sorting is really unintuitive though :s
I think the constant treatment like you're not Japanese, and will never be Japanese. That is the racism. It's subtle and maybe seems polite, but it's still prejudice and discrimination based off your race. Even if you're half Japanese, and have family there, or you have lived in Japan for 50 years they'll look at you as a foreigner. That's something about the US, Brazil, Canada, and other melting pot countries that's kinda beautiful. No matter how you look, and how long you spend living there, you are a part of that country.
So wait, I wouldn't be able to survive on $10 all you an eat grill-beef-at-your-table restaurants? Dangit. But anyway to the real question. As a gaijin, and after all these years contributing as much as you have to the FGC, do you feel like you get the same respect there now that you would get if you were native Japanese doing the same thing you do? If not, is it even close? Quick side question is hay fever/allergies as common there as some people say?
I completely disagree on the Japanese McDonalds thing, I think it's roughly the same, but weebs just say it's in Japan and therefore better. That being said, double patty samurai mac is dope (it's a burger with a soy sauce glaze). A lot of racism here isn't "I hate foreigners," it's moreso being "other'ed" here. It's like people lean so hard on stereotypes, they treat you like an alien as opposed to another human being. That being said, I once was at the gym, and the police rolled up and started questioning me, saying they got a call from someone saying that I was suspicious. I was just sitting down, playing Pokemon Go on my phone... Blew my mind. It was like I was in a Japan edition of one of the Karen videos you see online. I do live in the country-side though, might be less common in big cities.
14:56 So you're telling me Japan doesn't do balance patches and people have to adapt instead of begging for the next patch
I miss those, "Jiyuna in japan" vlog video. Those were amazing to watch. I enjoy all your videos tho. Love the work:)

Saizeriya is godlike. Actual lifesaver for foreigners.
Only time I've ever got major food poisoning was after a Saizeriya in China... but it's was a £2 carbonara, so I couldn't resist going back.

I was trolled hard; someone told me Jiyuna was a brazilian/filipino who moved to Japan with nationality rights because of some ancesttry.
Finally a good fucking video
Where would be good places to stay/visit when in Japan?

There are 500000 channels based solely around dating/getting girls as foreigner.
