Rest in peace Kevin Conroy. You will always be The Batman.
That’s exactly what drove me here. He was Batman
So devastating. He will always be Batman for sure.
It just feels so unreal. He was always the definitive Batman, be it in the DCAU or Arkham games, and to hear that he is no longer with us… it’s heartbreaking.
I came back to this video, listening to this masterpiece to honor the man who made my childhood 😞
I had the pleasure to meet him once at a comic con and he was absolutely wonderful. He gave me an autograph and wrote "Your Batman" after I told him he'll always be my Batman.
We are all here for the same reason, dont deny it...
Lets mourn the best batman together...
Damn right
Amen, brother
Actually I’m just here to listen to the music
“The batman”
May your eternal soul rest in peace, dark knight.
This is now both in memoriam of Shirley Walker and Kevin Conroy. Her music and his voice brought Batman to life, defining a generation of fans.
GenerationS. My dad use to watch Batman TAS, he told me about it and now it’s one of my favorite shows
:( today I learned Shirley Walker wasn't with us anymore.
@dynamicstudios6254 Correction: this stuff influenced YOUR FATHER. HE influenced YOU.
It sounds like you weren't even around for this show, generation z kid.
@@CytorrakAvatar Hey hey, it doesn’t matter if he wasn’t. It’s a testament to how good this show is that it still attracts new fans today. I wasn’t around for BTAS and even the New Batman Adventures and Batman Beyond either, but I caught re-runs of those shows while I watched Justice League and JLU.
@@foldabotZexactly I’m the same I watched the show because I’ve heard how great it is and it’s actually gotten me into watching the whole DCAU this show is awesome
Shirley got it; she understood, & had the talent to convey the tone. RIP Shirley

I always loved Danny Elfmans Batman theme but Shirley took Batman music to another dimension to where it told a story on its own
F
RIP Shirley.
Where can we find another like her for the new movies and games???
This woman is responsible for what you hear when you think of batman, she can NEVER be lauded enough for this
Nope that is still Danny Elfman.
@DocWolph Yep
Well, to be fair - Danny Elfman has a lot to do with that too.
Danny had a lot to do with the theme, but when given the chance Shirley took it to a new level xx
@@xxLornyTunesxx Exactly!!!
What I love about Shirley Walker's theme is that it sounds both heroic and tragic, and that's just perfect for a character like Batman, he doesn't enjoy being Batman, but he feels compelled to be. Batman was born out of suffering, but that suffering was transformed into limitless will and heroic sacrifice to fight for justice. I feel like this theme encapsulates all of that, and for that, it will always mean Batman to me.
epic and sad at the same time
Wow, very well put. You very clearly know your Batman well.
This is a worthy comment. Not an ounce of fangasming to be detected, but pure character analysis. 💯
Embracing your suffering and channeling it into something to help people.
FINALLY!! Someone who understands
RIP Kevin Conroy
“Without Batman, crime has no punchline…”
@dlausactor6373
Thanks, that scene hits differently after learning about Conroy's passing.
I got chills reading this.
This was a WB Kids TV show. No-one expected Shirley to go this hard.
But she did. (This can be said for any aspect of TAS)
I was in my 20s when B:TAS came out ... that, and 'The Animaniacs' was at the time when WB really pushed the envelope when it came to 'kids' shows ...
... nowadays you simply couldn't make B:TAS, because it would be considered way too gritty for a children's show, even though, going through Junior, and High, School, kids know, and experience, what real life is like ...
My hot take: stop 'talking down' to kids 13, and over, in television shows. They may not be fully adults yet, but neither are they stupid ...
@@nigelft Well, they may become stupid if they don't figure out things themselves or don't have experience. Hopefully not. I wasn't even existent when this show released, I'm 16, and I think these shows are much better than the 'teen' shows. Those are too dramatic with little to no character development and action, compared to the animations.
Edit 10 months later: I realize that this comment makes little sense now, so please discard the first sentences up to “I’m sixteen” and onward.
A part of my childhood I’ll never regret.
And why Batman will always be my favorite superhero.
@TA RC Batman the Animated Series actually premiered in prime time on FOX before moving to the 3pm slot as part of their afternoon cartoon line up. It didn't move to WB until later.
It was originally FoxKids before thr WB tho.
He is vengeance.
He is the night.
And he will always be Batman.
Always.
RIP Kevin Conroy.

Batman was born,
Bruce Wayne died.
And Alfred has recently died in the comics....Bane snapped his neck. But when hallucinating under some new mix of Joker gas......Bruce had visions of Alfred basically speaking sense back into him.

Because he wore the mask at wrong side

What does Kevin Conroy have to do with this quote? This is from Batman Begins. A Christian Bale quote.
Kevin Conroy wasn't the definitive Batman, he WAS THE Batman and he always will be, decades from now people will still picture Batman talking in their heads while reading a comic and hear him.
Beloved Husband, Brother, and Son. The voice of an entire generation of children that grew up following such an emblematic character and his stories for years. The voice that followed this character in most of his appearances, and most importantly...A great person, with a big heart.
Rest in Peace, Kevin Conroy. To me, you will always be The Batman.
the fact that giacchino referenced Shirley's style a ton in the batman score made me love the movie so much. it was a big part of making the whole thing feel like a live action version of the animated series. she's such an iconic part of what makes batman who he is.
I came back here after hearing the new The Batman score and Michael Giacchino took massive inspiration from Shriley Walker's amazing work.
You should go listen to his score for Mercenaries Playground of Destruction.

You were a symbol of strength both on and off the screen. You will be missed everyday by those you have constantly inspired. May you rest in eternal peace, Kevin.

Literally everyone calls Kevin Conroy the definitive Batman
"He's not a hero, he is a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a Dark Knight..."
Shirley was so talented, it’s clear by her music she understood the character and knocked it out of the park. RIP
5:23 - My favorite rendition of all time. Played at the end of Harvey's origin Two-Parter. "Here's to you Harvey..." as Batman flips a coin into the fountain.
Thanks! I was just about to ask what episode that was from
Also plays at the end of "Nothing to Fear" - amazing track.

Good placement! This show was something else.
2:29 is like a punch directly to your soul. WOW.
The choir just adds another layer of epic to the whole thing. Makes Batman sound and feel like an entity summoned by God himself to combat the forces of evil in the world.

With all the incredible composers who have done batman, like Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman, its amazing that Shirley Walker's suite is still nearly untouched

I just realized that Batman always has to be dark and miserable for our joy and entertainment.
The jokes on him always HAHAHAHA
Not always. There are plenty of more light-hearted or at the very least versions of him that does enjoy being Batman and has a full batfamily that gives him love and support. Unfortunately, we know from Mask of the Phantams and Batman Beyond that DCAU Batman isn’t one of them.
Adam west batman: am I a joke to you 😂
@@rcbmmines4579 although in regards of batman beyond, thats just a potential outcome of Batman's future in dcau, not the definitive outcome (even if it works great for it)
@@alexsapsarras4812 in general? Yes Beyond is just a possible future. In the DCAU? No it’s actually the definitive future. JLU confirms this in Epilogue. Unless we get a new season or an animated movie giving us an alternative, Batman Beyond is the future of the DCAU.
No matter what new themes may come they will not beat Shirley Walker's or Danny Elfman's versions
Hans zimmer:hold my beer
Loki 2012 Batman Zimmer is no competition.
Damn right
I think it depends on which version of Batman you’re taking about. Zimmer works very well for Bale’s Batman and Affleck’s Batman. Shirley works very well for anything else. Shirely’s theme is what I hear in my head when I read Batman comics, and often what I tend to listen to while reading them.
@@tvalokibatman6563 except ask someone to hum the batman theme, no one ever does the Zimmer version
Could not imagine this show without Shirley’s music and Kevin’s portrayal. And of course all the other talented people, too. I doubt we will be lucky enough to see such a great version of Batman created ever again.
Why dont ppl understand that THIS MUSIC REPRESENTS BATMAN. It bring me chills. Its shows darkness. Batman though having alfred, catwoman, robin etc is always the hero with the darkest past and is always truely alone.
As stupid as this sounds, it gives me the feeling that there was always something more to the Batman.
More than just Bruce Wayne. More than just one man's crusade again injustice and his quest to right a city full of wrongs. Something more than just a man in a costume was born that night Bruce put on the Batsuit. It was born of evil, injustice, darkness and illness of the mind, but all it seeks to do is good.
The Batman is more than just an image, or a suit, or a man behind a mask. It's that part of all of us that shouts out into the darkness for all that is evil to be destroyed. It's the part of humanity that rights the evils that have been done, even though it's born out of a place of hatred or anger. It is the good part of darkness that is unlike the rest of the shadows. It is vengeance and justice incarnate.
It is Batman.
The music portrays hope real good and it makes me feel like im running on roof tops.
He isn’t truly alone. The Joker is truly alone and that’s what makes them different.
I don't know if you understand batman
RIP Shirley Walker, Kevin Conroy and Arleen Sorkin
I wonder what the orchestra and choir members must have thought the first time they played the Mask of the Phantasm theme.....
“My God”
how does that work, anyway? are they given the sheet music ahead of time and expected to prepare their part on their own? when I was in choir class, they had prepared finished versions of everything to listen to and learn from, which is how I function.. but obviously someone has to be the FIRST to sing something, and I have no concept of what that's like because reading music is fucking voodoo to me. can they hear it as they read it?
like, if you do an acapella multitrack thingamajoob these days, you feed the music into a midi program that gives you a simple track to sing along to along with letting you hear how all the tracks sound together, so even now there's cheats when you start from scratch. but this was back when it was TAPES, man. and how did rehearsals start? how was the choir director able to listen to dozens of people singing and get a handle on who needs a little tip on a note they got wrong or summat?

Mannn, I remember when I was a kid that part hit so hard... nowadays cartoons just dont have that emotional depth to them.
Although I can’t pinpoint a timestamp exactly, I’m pretty sure a portion of this theme plays in that same episode during the “I am vengeance, I am the night, I am Batman” line.
The batman shadow...
This show changed so many lives. It changed animated TV. Before BTAS, cartoons were your typical affair with the villain of the week and the purpose was to sell toys. BTAS gave these villains backstories and got across that not everyone is born evil but we are broken by tragedy, our circumstances and everyone is capable of having a bad day. A generation of children from different races, cultures and other backgrounds that watched this show are now grown with their own children and helping others in their communities as lawyers, doctors, firefighters, cops etc. Not because they could be Batman, but because of Batman’s ideal which is to help others.
Thank you for everything Mr. Conroy.

The haunted nature of this theme makes it all at once heroic, tragic, and terrifying. Without words any words at all, it conveys the character almost as much as seeing him in a comic book would. Even someone unfamiliar with the character just hearing this, I’m betting they’d imagine someone or something scary but heroic.
Can't believe it's been a year already. Rest in peace Kevin Conroy.
Whenever I see Batman, this is the theme I hear. Very haunting and it fits who Batman is very well
