Unbox Therapy That's not fucking steel wool in any capacity. "Green Steel Wool" only comes up with a few images of that because other people are just as foolish as you. If you google "Scotch Brite Pad", which is exactly what that is, you get INFINITLY MORE IMAGES OF EXACTLY THAT, along with the official listings and tons of stores selling exactly what you showed in the video. They are not made of steel AT ALL, they make no reference to "steel" AT ALL, and they are specifically made to be abrasive against caked on food but not enough to damage pans, dishes, and glasses. Steel wool is very clearly metallic, leaves fragments of metal all over, and is extremely abrasive on a very fine level as to leave tons of extremely small scratches and thus a surface that feels smooth to the touch but not glossy.
waykool698 Bad thing is that many stones, regular sand, your house wall, bricks, concrete etc. is the same as sanding paper or contains very hard materials in it. Therefore in real life situations you will scratch it very easily. This ion glass bs is just rebranding by apple of so called mineral glass very well known in watch industry. And it scratches slowly and steadily. Sapphire glass doesn't, I have been wearing swiss watch for over 5 years daily and there is not even a microscopic scratch, yet the steel case and band is highly scratched which I think adds charm to my watch as long as there is no scratch on the glass.
Roberto Pescatore watches are bullshit anyway, they are just overexpensive bracelets men can wear. you can just take a look at your smartphone or look at one of the clocks that are everywhere in public
Martin R I have to disagree with you, having watch is much more convenient than taking out your phone out of the pocket every time and they add style to a gentlemen. Ofcourse I am not talking about this apple crap which is made out of shitty materials and looks disgusting.
Roberto Pescatore "and they add style to a gentleman" so still a accessoire.. the apple watch looks amazing compared to other smartwatches and it seems high quality to me, how is this shitty material?
I've cleaned windows in the past, and learned that 00 and 000 steel wool can remove some faint scratches, because it's so fine that, in a sense, it polishes the glass. I also learned that the green side of a 3M Scotch-Brite pad, or most other green abrasive pads, WILL ALWAYS scratch window glass! So I hope you give a scotch brite pad a try in the future. :-)
P.S. I noticed all the grief people are giving you for calling the green pad in the video steel wool. I just took your word for it. But turns out you were right -- it's better to google "synthetic steel wool" though. It gets more hits -- most of them being made by 3M. They even sell them in 1, 0, 00, 000, and 0000 grades--just like steel wool. I don't know how similar this is to a scotch-brite pad is though. All the same, I hope give a scotch-brite pad a try some time.
It would most likely render the display useless,as it would scratch it so bad that anything on the screen wouldn't be visible. Or maybe it would crack it.....

Im sorry, but im getting really tired of these videos... "does it bend?" "Will the screen crack?" "Will it scratch?" Of f*cking course it will! But if you take care of your things they wont. I dont have a single little spot on my phone, and thats couse i give a shit about it. I want it to be clean and scratch free, i dont drop it or wave it around like an idiot. My smartwatch isnt scratched or broken either, thats cause i know im wearing it and maybe i'll take it off if im gonna dig my hands into a bunch off shit. Lou, i fucking LOVE your videos! Im not hating. This is just my opinion on things :) Thanx
the purpose of those videos is not to see if it will bend. the purpose is to see how much pressure and strength will it take to bend it. he does the videos to see how durable it is.
Long talk, none usuable content, my AW 4 was heavely scratched after 2 weeks by getting in contact with walls and doors when I touched them whlile passing. Even cheap watches for less than 50 $ have saphire glas. No reason for Apple to charge a couple of hundred $. Will get the AW 6 now, but will have to surrender to scratches.
That's pretty funny because an actual watch that I owned which was about $300+ fell out of my pocket while at the gym and shattered the glass on it, so I'm guessing that's the kind of test lew will use.
How much does Samsung pay you!? First bending the iPhone 6 plus then scratching this Apple Watch! Even on the Samsung Note Edge website, it says "Curved, not bent". Im disappointed.
Yeah Samsung is ran by a bunch of douchbags, they've literally paid people to act as fake Apple Store employees and recommend the customers to a Samsung phone
The reason he bent the iPhone 6+ was because there was reports that it could easly bend. He tests basically every device that is popular. And as you saw the Apple watch could handle pretty much everything, besides the sandpaper. But let's be honest here, who the fuck has sandpaper in their pockets?
InDubWeStep01 the sand paper is a legitimate test cause rocks can have the same effect like when you go hiking with the sport version watch he was testing the sport one their
Am I the only one who thought the results of these tests were expected? People use the edges of glass to sharpen knives all the time... So why would I be impressed if the knife didn't scratch the screen? And melted sand is used to make glass, so obviously it would have a good chance at scratching the screen. Isn't this common knowledge?
I've been wanting sandpaper scratch tests for years, glad people are finally doing them. People don't seem to understand that most metals aren't as hard as Gorilla Glass, which means that it won't scratch the glass no matter how sharp it is. A razor blade and key will do the same damage to the glass if made of the same metal. Sandpaper is actually a very realistic test, you don't have to necessarily be carrying it. If you carry your phone in a sandy environment (e.g. construction site, desert, beach), there is a high chance that sand will get in your pocket and scratch your phone, because sand is as hard as glass, unlike most metals. If you put a phone in a bag of sand and shake it, the results will be similar to sandpaper. So don't drop your phone in the sand on the beach!
I got a brand new iwatch nike edition and in less than 5hrs after playing with it at my brother in law couch i found a really bad scratch very disappointed with apple its hard to watch this video and dont feel very angry about my watch quality
Kiora. From the land of the long white cloud. Just wanted to congratulate you on your videos. Not only are they are brilliantly produced and presented but the content is commendable. Looking forward to more reviews
Yeah, but they need to get to the good stuff. I don't want to listen to them make unfunny jokes and stuff I don't want to learn about, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people agree.
You should add brick to your list of materials to scratch. I think it'd be a good idea to test the glass against surfaces that people would likely brush up against/fall into/push through. E.g. Asphalt, rocks, brick/mortar, concrete, the teeth of your enemies
I've had the moto 360 since launch and it hasn't accumulated any scratches. It has ran into door handles, drawers, counters & all sorts of things and has held up like a champ. The apple watch will be fine.
Unbox therapy, your my favourite unboxer and reviewer on RUclips! You never praise the brand and even if you do, it's from your own opinion. Not like everyone else who go with whatever is more popular.
Maybe it is worth getting the sapphire glass version if it's used heavily. Problem is, most reviews I've seen so far say that only the sport edition is worth getting.
A more realistic test would be smacking it against a wall. Hand eye coordination failure sometimes results in watch crystal scratches, while I have never rubbed steel wool or sand paper against my wrist.
Hi, great video, next time may I suggest trying a ball point pen. Lots of those ball tip are made out of tungsten. But then again, I heard they scratch sapphire glass so might be doom anyway!
Can you do a scratch test on the Apple Watch series 4 SS model? I have owned my black Stainless Steel with the Milanese loop for less than 24 hours and the back is already scratched.
everybody should know that metal is a pretty soft material (sharp=/= hard) To scratch something you need something harder than the material you are trying to scratch. Living close to the beach, every phone/display/glass or whatever didnt survive longer than a couple of months in my pocket without getting scratched/milky
These scenarios are way too extreme albeit a good guide as to what would completely damage the screen. I have 4 pairs of watches now and I have never scratched a single one of the faces. Maybe I'm too careful with them but the thing about watches is that they're on your wrist and not in your pocket unlike your iPhone/iPad. So the probability of it getting damaged by dropping it on the floor or from other items is rather low I suppose. Pretty much why I chose to get the Sport version instead of the more expensive Watch/Watch Edition since they all practically do the same thing!
As a mechanical engineer, I have a pretty good understanding of material properties, and I have known that dirt and sand were the real scratch culprits for a long time. Check out the Mohs hardness scale here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale A simple Google search will tell you that "Gorilla Glass" is approximately a 7 out of 10 on this scale, which means that it will not be scratched by most common metals (i.e. keys, coins). However, though fairly rare, there are plenty of materials that could be present in common "dirt" that are above a 7 on the scale and therefore will scratch your "Gorilla Glass" screen
basically it is hardened glass so alloyed metal can do nothing on the surface because of the hardness difference . but i did see a video about how this thing drops, the screen shattered immediately when dropping from 3 feet face down. So it is not quite tough for daily use considering like you may hit something sharp or stiff, which is normal when you take it on your wrist everyday. My old quartz watch dropped face down at the same condition many times and nothing happened.
This is why my wife and I got the regular Apple Watch. Sapphire crystal faces have always held up on any of my other watches and I can't imagine having a watch without it.
I would hope that the sport would have a screen more resistant against surfaces like sandpaper. I'm sure a tumble against asphalt would give it a nick or two, but what are screen protectors for?
I lobe this scratch test. It actually simulates damage done to the watch by every day items that will be carried in your pocket. Also the wool and sandpaper was a good way to to test if it could stand up to rubbing against something.
Sport or standard Apple Watch?
Unbox Therapy none.

Good thing I don't carry sandpaper on my arm.
Yeah, that would be awful!
waykool698 Bad thing is that many stones, regular sand, your house wall, bricks, concrete etc. is the same as sanding paper or contains very hard materials in it. Unbox Therapy To avoid scratching your watch, dock it in this beautiful dock for Apple Watch and iPhone from www.moxiware.com

Don't do a drop test, put it on your wrist and hit it against a wall at various strengths. That will actually happen with a watch.
How?
if sandpaper can do that, I'd like to see what public restroom toiletpaper would do to it.
It would most likely render the display useless,as it would scratch it so bad that anything on the screen wouldn't be visible.

matt landry Not sure.
PKMflawless ...you obviously don't drop it. You bang your wrist into something and that's how watches get scratched. Have you never worn one?
matt landry A watch isn't just for your wrist, thats a wrist watch, there are different types : ).
Knives slice, they don't slide around. To get the cutting potential you need to use it like you're cutting a slice of bread.
People act surprised but duh. Its still glass, so sand will always scratch it.

LOL you're right! must be some kind of iWatch spin-off.
You should add brick to your list of materials to scratch.

It's ion strengthened at the atomic level, it's not replacing the molecules of the glass just the ions with larger potassium instead of sodium ions

How do know this is re-badged Gorilla Glass? It could be Asahi Dragon glass.
did apple give you the screen parts? seems like
