Here are the song's lyrics which I found on a lyric site. I have no idea what the translation of the German lyrics is.
Watch me now, here I go, all I need’s a little snow!
Starts me off, sets the theme,
helps me dream my Christmas dream,
Every year I dream it, hoping things will change,
An end to the crying, the shouting, the dying,
And I hope you will dream it too!
It’s Christmas,
Remember?
We’ve got to remember!
So, light the light, I’m home tonight,
I need you to warm me, to calm me, to love me!
To help me to dream my Christmas dream!
Crazy things, said an’ done,
Every single day but one!
Every night should, I believe,
Be the same as Christmas Eve,
Nights should all be silent,
Days should all slow down,
An end to the hurry, the noise and the worry!
And I hope you believe that too!
It’s Christmas,
Remember?
Does no one remember?
The whole world needs, a Christmas dream,
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us . . .
To help us to dream our Christmas dream!
(Leute dirigiert die Welt, Ehrlichkeit bringt selten Geld,
Jeder möcht' Sieger sein, wer verliert bleibt ganz allein;
Doch manch Will' ist möglich durch die Fantasie
Du stirbst um zu leben und nimmst um zu geben;)
Einmal im Jahr wird alles wahr
Zu Weihnacht vergiss nicht,
Vergiss es gewiss nicht.
The whole world needs, a Christmas dream,
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us . . .
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us . . .
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us . . .
To help us to dream our Christmas dream!
This has to be the best Christmas song ever
I amazed this song is never played on radio
I was in Munich in 1974 for the premier of "The Odessa File," and remember the opening of the movie very well, featuring Perry Como singing, "A Christmas Dream." I watched it there in Munich and was touched by both the movie and the song. It has a haunting lilt that makes me want to travel back in time to 1974 and relive those German Christmas holidays all over again.
This is just one of the best Christmas songs I've ever heard.
One of the best Christmas songs. RIP Perry!
Love Perry and those German voices
I love this song. When Peter (Jon Voigt)asked his mother what the war was like for her and she said "I tried to hide your eyes so you wouldn't see people burning like torches." It reminded me of my mother who said the same thing, she lived in Hamburg during the war. When I hear the children and Perry Como sing in German I always tear up.
a wonderful voice Perry had! R.I.P.
This song is great. I had a GERMAN CHRISTMAS in 67. So any song like this special to me. I have the lyrics on line with the German words in it. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.
Love this Christmas song, searched for it after watching Odessa File.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. It brings tears to my eyes every time the kids sing.
Not easy to find this, and holiday radio hasn't picked it up even though it's better than 80% of what they play; pity. Pretty little song.
Beautiful song, we can but dream.
Great song by the young Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice. The best bit is the boy's choir singing in German. They are the old London Boy's Voices (sadly no longer around) so belovec of Benjamin Britten for their natural, unaffected sound: just normal working class lads who loved to sing.
God bless you Jon and Perry. We need our Christmas Dream this year more than ever!
I always associate Perry Como with Christmas, as he always seemed to be on TV on christmas day. This is a wonderful song - pity its not played more often at christmas, Beats slade and Roy Wood hands down!
What a voice this man had. We miss you Perry
Best Christmas song ever.
Love this song.
I've looked for years and never found it on CD or cassette. I love it and would like to play it every Christmas.
