Hmmmm...zero fatalities? Not likely. Many accidents come about from a fair amount of unexpected things such as heart attacks, Bee stings and others. Can we reduce it? Sure! Zero is unlikely. As it is with contention. Conflict resolution is important but it is influenced by many many issues.
So, no Mormon. No Moroni...either of them. No Nephi vs. Laban. No Jesus cleansing the Temple. I agree with the desire to be contention and stress free. But we must also stand for something or we will fall for anything. (See President Hinkley)
There's a difference between CAUSING contention, which none of the individuals you mentioned did, and responding to it. The men you mentioned had to respond to the contention and conflict that they were faced with. None of them went looking for a fight, which is what contentious people do. ALL of the men were responding to contentious actions directed at them and/or their people. It doesn't mean we have to be pacifists. It means we don't CAUSE contention and we don't go looking for a fight. Mormon and his son's people were constantly at war with the Lamanites, because the Lamanites started the fight and wouldn't leave them alone. Captain Moroni was the same scenario. Nephi was totally resistant to killing Laban. An angel commanded him to do it. He was also resistant to the contention his brothers threw his way. Jesus cleansing the temple was not Him running through the temple beating people up and screaming in their faces. I think He was actually pretty calm about it. you can turn over a money changers table and release doves without getting angry. He actually created the whip He used (and He didn't whip people with it), which is a VERY difficult thing to do if you are overcome with anger. There's a huge difference between causing contention and responding to contention directed at you in order to stop it.
The “ox in the mire” principle doesn’t just apply to working on Sunday. Sometimes circumstances change what is most needful at any given time. That is what Nephi’s story is all about as well as the times when war is and is not justified. When Jesus cleansed the temple, he did it in a way that was not contentious, but it was confrontational. The difference is the first holds hatred in one’s heart. The other holds truth and defends truth. It doesn’t demonize another side, but defends the more needful thing.

Personally I feel Wendy speaks from a postmodern framework, without knowing, which asserts that all local cultural knowledges, except for western ideas and values, are valid; and also that intention doesn't matter, it is only the effect that matters. This thinking is very common in academia, and she is an academic. The biologist is using postmodern thought when he coins the term emotional violence. Language is not violence. As Elder Bednar says we choose to be offended. Physical harm and destruction is violence. When defining love we must view people as children of God that require respect but ideas never receive the same respect. Love isn't accepting ALL ideas it is sharing ideas that align with the doctrine of Christ. I know Wendy has good intentions though when she speaks on these topics.
Christ didn't argue with anyone. He said it as it is and went on with life. He is patient with us on our journey. We need to be patient with others as they travel this journey. Helping others to see truth, calmly and respectfully, is necessary. Contention doesn't help anyone change.
This is a perfect example of why the scriptures teach that women should not teach nor usurp authority over us. Wendy’s doctrine, although nice-sounding, is injurious to the religious freedoms our ancestors sacrificed greatly for.
@@yeboscrebo4451 it should be obvious why that’s wrong morally. If gods laws don’t align with what is obviously moral then his laws are worthless and unworthy of respect
@@jacoblynam923 What are you talking about? Lol. Unfortunately, you’ve got it backwards. Morality doesn’t come from what is “obvious” to man. The subjectivity of man is downstream from objective truth or God. There is a reason the scriptures teach of the danger of allowing women authority. Leaders at the pulpit condemn those searching for answers and those speaking out. Wendy, words are just that--words. The church is an organization of people who can be imperfect, however the gospel is christ himself, seek christ don't dwell or focus on those who don't live it. Christ loves you as he does everyone, but we need to seek him truly for us to find him.
I know what you are referring too also, I am sorry you have suffered, but we are all tried even in ways we wouldn't expect, but the key to our salvation is christ, at the end christ will make it right. No one not even those in the church are exempt from his judgement.
@@livingsouloftimestudio2887Does that mean we should let this this continue in the church? Why do members feel ok with letting things like this happen? The first rule of the church has always been to protect the image of the church. To protect the good name of the church. When there is liability, policies are skirted around. @@carjun2 oh right, that’s why Jesus said “hey guys it’s really not a great idea to engage in money changing in the temple - just an idea, thanks”. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. “
Truth comes before relationships with others because God is truth and God comes first, even at the expense of those relationships. “Zero contention” places undue priority on the tribalistic, security-seeking nature of the carnal man in this fallen world.
However you dont go and start arguing over things you disagree about. We are all learning and becoming closer to the Lord a little each day. A person doesn't get better by being attacked and criticized for their weakness every day but by studying scriptures and being loved. The Lord is patient with us, we need to be patient with others.
The lord is patient with us in our journey to truth and perfection. We need to do so with others. Fighting about it instead of respectful conversation will help no one progress and change.
Fantastic speech! Thanks for sharing!
This is the blind leading the blind
Honestly, I believe that students, and all staff, should be required to exactly support ALL of the Family Proclamation or please go teach at or attend some secular university, but not any church affiliated school. We can be kind to those who feel differently or who support lifestyles we have been WARNED by the Lord to flee, but compromise is spiritually fatal if we attempt to bring worldly trends and philosophies into the Lord's church and kingdom.Marriage has one definition and only one definition as defined by the Lord, nothing else!
I need to listen through a few times...l have not quite got this...sounds interesting..
Opening space for evangelicals that they may have a better understanding of the Saviors mission than what I learned in the church has led to great joy and increased faith. Thanks Sister Nelson
"Turn it off, like a light switch"
A marvelous talk!
Boo YAW! PREACH, Sister!
I adore Sister Nelson so much. I would love to meet her, sit with her and just, listen.
let me know when ...and hurry up..running out time.
You are right Martel. Standing with truth is most important. 👍👍 If we all stood with truth we would be at one.
Confronting evil isn’t the same as engaging in contention
@@katehill3610 yes, but it is easy sometimes to do what we have been instructed in the Book of Mormon not to do, which is contend with those who contend. There is a time to defend the church and a time to let the mockers mock.
Zero contention. This is something to definitely consider. How we can remove it from our lives.
You can't really expect to live a life without some contention. We are to even contend for our faith.
@@tdubs5128 contention is a choice and it's granted by others, if we all had one heart and one mind as the people of zion which is quoted also in the Bible, there would be no such thing. In the end its energy that influences for the worse.
By being of “one heart and one mind”- which isn’t likely to happen any time soon. Until then, trying to eradicate contention is a futile attempt and any attempt made would verge on being authoritarian and stifling for the expression of individual beliefs and alternative viewpoints.
@@yeboscrebo4451 I believe awareness should be made tho so we recognize it and do what we can to avoid it, until we identify it will continue to be a problem.
@@livingsouloftimestudio2887 That’s not what is being advocated though. “Zero contention” is much much more forceful than “try to avoid it”. It seems to me that whats being advocated leads to suppression of discussion and uniformity over diversity of opinion - all for the sake of peace. When Christ said “I am come not to bring peace but a sword....” I think he had this very principle in mind.
Like, forcing masks and vaccines, thank you for clarifying.
How curious that when you add ion to the word content, it reverses its meaning...
What is Righteous indignation then?

For verily, verily i say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me,but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another!!
Yes, her ideas here are dangerous and not helpful.
Yep
Christ didn't argue with anyone. He said it as it is and went on with life. He is patient with us on our journey. We need to be patient with others as they travel this journey. Helping others to see truth, calmly and respectfully, is necessary. Contention doesn't help anyone change.
He also didn’t seem to argue when he was tried by the law and then executed. Is that what you would do as well?
This is a perfect example of why the scriptures teach that women should not teach nor usurp authority over us. Wendy’s doctrine, although nice-sounding, is injurious to the religious freedoms our ancestors sacrificed greatly for.
Yikes
@@jacoblynam923 nice argument!
Women, and I speak generally here, are divorced from responsibility. You have to have authority coupled with responsibility or you’ve got big problems. Adam was cursed for “hearkening to his wife”. The solution, the way to reverse the curse is to do the opposite.
@@yeboscrebo4451 ok, you’re definitely trolling me. There’s no way you think that little of women. If your god teaches that then I am above your god and I’ll wipe my ass with whatever pages of the Bible hold those teachings.
What about abortion and the sanctity of life? 😥 If viewpoints do NOT change; innocent lives will continue to be lost. How do we not contend with the adversary’s lies about the worth of a soul and still come out victorious?
Read D&C 88.
through the grace of Christ we are saved, those unborn children, and all who have suffered that come unto him. however we should stand for truth and righteousness and defend the lives that matter, i hope we can all join together and be a voice of firmness against this wickedness that's destroying our world.
Use powerful words of love in the debate showing love.
Definitely, that's why we seek the personal revelation, inspiration and thinking for your self like you just displayed, not giving into generalizations and mainstream world. Agreed.
Great message.

I have only ever known abuse in the LDS church. When I speak up about it, no one listens. Members make excuses for abuse. Leaders at the pulpit condemn those searching for answers and those speaking out. Wendy, words are just that--words. Until you can preach the gospel as Jesus did, through thoughts, words, AND behavior, they are meaningless.
I know many people believe it's just the predator at fault, but it's not. After my daughter was assaulted by a church leader, I did alot of research. I became an advocate for abuse in the church for 15 years. Yes, i know what the bishops handbook says and current policies are, at least those that are available to members. The first rule of the church has always been to protect the image of the church. To protect the good name of the church. When there is liability, policies are skirted around. So when I hear you say, 'It will be made all right in the end,' I'm hearing, 'I dont want to look into this issue because it makes me uncomfortable, even if children are at risk.''
@@alananat6628 In my opinion, we can't hold the church accountable for the behavior of another! The gospel is perfect ❤️ but people aren't!
@@stardustgirl2904 I'm not saying we can't hold the perpetrator accountable. I'm saying we should also hold institutions who hide crimes, dont report crimes, dont follow abuse protocol, dont take accountability for their leaders, hire lawyers to harrass abuse victims and their families, telling victims they should forgive instead of pursuing charges if they want to, telling girls and women they need to repent for being raped, telling women they need to stay with abusive husbands as not to ruin their eternal families(although this was changed very recently), etc, etc, etc.
How would this behavior be considered okay if it were ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION??
Why are all the wives of the general authorities given the mic all-of-a-sudden? Members start treating Wendy like the queen of the church. Its weird. Feels eerily like the beginnings of a “royal family” or something.
The content of the message was beautiful and uplifting. 😊🙏🏽❤️
@@angelamoffo7339 how so?
People will complain that women in the church are oppressed and then complain that it’s a cult when the women start receiving a more powerful voice. You can never win with people whose hearts are ruled more by Lucifer than Jehova 🤷🏼♀️

Contention is of the devil, all in favor say I
For all my non God believing people contention causes problems all in favor say I
Zero Contention is a horrible slogan used as a cudgel to silence the the defense of truth. I see it over and over in church meetings, political discussions or the classroom - the very nice-sounding, politically correct, “good-intentioned” lies of the adversary can never be challenged because, the moment they are, the challenger is accused of being “contentious”. Christ himself certainly didn’t shy away from contention when he overturned the tables of the money changers.
Christ had righteous anger not contention
@@Lee21923 haha oh, ok
I disagree, Contention is fighting. It is not necessary in order to communicate, teach, exchange ideas.
@@carjun2 oh right, that’s why Jesus said “hey guys it’s really not a great idea to engage in money changing in the temple - just an idea, thanks”. Sometimes, when others are imposing harmful “ideas” on you, a counter-defensive idea is required or those things turn into harmful actions. If this is contentious, so be it. The North American Man/Boy Love Association wants to normalize pedophilia. What’s your opinion... “exchange ideas”, try to see their point of view? Wouldn’t want to be contentious would we? That’s not the right approach
I have to draw my line in the sand. Is a clown lol
Is disagreement considered contentious? For example, I disagree that the lds church is God's church. Is this considered contentious?
That's considered your opinion that's not contentious, contentious is causing more action to harm.
