Thanks Gale, I like the 7 wood but it ended up not going quite as far as I needed it to...so currently I still don't have a club for between 190 and 205. I'll be figuring something out by spring I hope.
Didn't realize you walked that 9. Round out what? You don't need a bag -- just play with that club! I'm gettin' me a 3, 5, and 7 Acer. You could play well with anything, however. Impressed that you didn't use a tee on the tee boxes. You consistently have great contact! Not one thin or fat shot, and straight. Well done GeezerT.
Thanks Jonathan, but unfortunately the 7 wood isn't working out because it's only carrying 180ish and I need 195-200. I might try to have it bent stronger at a shop if they can even to that. Tees are over rated, especially if you tee iron and fairway shots too high...it allows you to hit good shots with a bad swing, then you can't hit them off the ground!
@@GeezerTony Hopefully the hosel could be jacked a little bit OR perhaps a 5 woods hosel could be bent the other way to get it to a "6 wood" loft. So, you'd still recommend it as a 4 hybrid iron replacement? Perhaps a different shaft would make a difference. Looks like you put a graphite shaft on it. Either way, you played brilliantly with it! I'm trying to be thrifty and put the best set of tools together to give me a better chance, knowing that working on my swing is most important.
Tony, that was unbelievable! I'm not good enough to get around with just one club, but I am inspired to get my 7-club short set out again now that walking season has returned to Arizona. I usually score better with the short set because I rarely under-club with the gapping. (BTW, I just bought a used Cobra 7w and can't wait to get it out on the course now.) Thanks for sharing.
Well, geezer, glad you were able to make and create something to fill that hole in your bag. The whole exercise was a lot of fun and forced you to be really creative and somehow you still manage to be under par. WELL DONE!.
There's definitely something in playing fewer clubs. Back in the day, I was in a 3 club competition and chose 4-wood, 7- iron and putter. Equaled my best ever score for a round of golf and have never scored better since
Great video. I'm not sure what club I'd take out of the bag to add a 7w. I have already replaced my 4,5,6 irons with 3,4,5 hybrids. It does make a difference.
I would remove the one that goes the same distance...probably either the 3 or the 4 hybrid. Get a cheapo used one to try first...maybe you don't need one.
I use a 7 wood quite a bit, especially when I am playing in windless conditions and I want a high trajectory shot. But when its windy the 4 highbridge works better at hitting it under the wind, for me.
I love my 7 wood and 3 & 4 hybrids. As an old geezer, these clubs are easy to hit and go high and straight. Ditched my 3 & 5 woods and 3 & 4 irons Should have done this years ago. Golf can be a struggle when you get old and these easy to hit clubs have made it easier and fun again.
How much you want for that 7 wood Tony? Just kidding. I already have one and love it for my 190 shots. So much easier to hit than a 4 iron! Another thing I have discovered is that it is a good club to hit out of the ruff sometimes because the leading edge can get down under the ball easier than most other long distance clubs.
Thank you Jack. Mostly I tend to hit straight shots, but I did notice that 7 wood wanted to draw a bit. As long as it's a solid hit and in the direction, I don't care if it curves a bit either way...with any club!
I'm not sure...I just wanted to try the 7 wood because I've never liked the look of a hybrid and have never carried one. In theory I would think the 4 hybrid would be more controllable because it is a shorter club.
I wish I had your consistent swing, your tempo and timing is very good. I think a lot of geezers can learn a lot from you Tony! I enjoy your videos. Now I hope I can take to the course what I’ve learned.😊
I remember back in the day I had a Callaway Heaven (7) wood and a Divine 9 wood. This was before hybrids were really a thing. There were times when I was struggling off the tee where I could bust the 7 and 9 down the fairway and keep it in play. My father and I played a lot back then and he kept asking me why I insisted on hitting driver when I could hit the 7 wood 225 down the middle. I never had a good answer for that. I love my 3 and 5 hybrids now but may be time to try a 7 wood. Also, what grip are you using on that club? Thanks for the video.
Hi Kevin....that grip is a cheap chinese imitation midsize half cord I ordered from Amazon. I refuse to pay $13 per grip for a name brand. That entire set costs about $33 so if I have to change them more often (and I haven't on my other clubs in about a year), I would still come out way ahead...since I can do that work myself.
@@basicbob1000 Pretty sure I told the brand and showed it to the camera before I hit the first shot! Check that section out. It's an offbrand called Acer and I bought it online from a company called Valuegolf.com. It looks pretty good and I think is just as good as a name brand but about 1/4 the price.
@@GeezerTony Hi Tony ..., you refuse to pay $13 for a name grip? ... in Canada, I have to pay $25.99 + 13% tax for Kirk's recommended Jumbomax Ultralite grips !!!
@@TSOSGERBY You don't have to! You choose to! Each of us have our own sense of the value of items...such as I won't pay "whatever" $5-$7 for a cup of Starbucks coffee.....It's just not that much better...to me. It is from the Setup 4 Impact swing that I now teach and learned from Kirk Junge. Check it out at Setup4Impact.com. We learn to make good, correct impact through body rotation. Thanks for watching and for the question!
I played a few rounds 25 years ago with an old codger who played a 7 wood. He convinced me to buy one, but after a few rounds, I put it in the back of my garage. Now that I have reached codgerhood myself, I took it out last summer, and was astonished at how responsive it was! Can’t get the distance you can, but the ball goes straight!
Yes, I get a lot of comments on that. No special reason other than I hit it best from there....nothing I would recommend to anyone when teaching. Thanks for watching!
You should try a 9 wood, just for fun. I have one and, depending on the course it can be useful. Enjoyed watching you, Tony.👌

Great round of golf with a 7wood Tony good video 👍👌

Tony, can u pls do a video on your main swing thoughts? I loved this video. Congrats!!!
I will try to include swing thoughts in my next video, in addition to planning out the shots. Thanks for the idea!
Love these challenges, you can learn so much about a club
Gordon so true...and it turned out to be a lot of fun too! Thanks for the comment!
Fun video Tony! I played yesterday and did hit some “wacky shots.” Not intentionally though. 😳

What is the benefit of the wood class of club compared to the likes of the 3 or 4 hybrid? Is it more controllable to hit?
I'm not sure...I just wanted to try the 7 wood because I've never liked the look of a hybrid and have never carried one. In theory I would think the 4 hybrid would be more controllable because it is a shorter club.
