When one of the first platypus (corpses?) was sent to London, they declared it was an obvious fake and could see the stitches holding it together. What? I guess we see what we expect.
I bought a digital camera with a decent zoom lens a year or two ago, and it still brings me so much joy to just sit back and take pictures of all kinds of common birds visiting my balcony on a foraging trip, for a sip of water or to take a quick bath. This odd-looking creature has a bill and webbed feet like a duck, a body and fur like an otter, and a tail like a beaver. It lays eggs like a chicken, burrows like a wombat, and suckles its young like a mother bear. Little wonder that the first scientist to examine one suspected that it was a hoax!
AKCHUYALLY their eggs are leathery like those of lizards, not hard-shelled like those of birds. But yeah when European naturalists first got their hands on a taxidermied one in 1799 they considered it a hoax - not unreasonably, as Frankensteining up chimeric taxidermies out of several different critters had a long and storied pedigree. The _Wolpertinger_ out of German folklore is a well-known and prolific example and the platypus is almost as bizarre.
You're trying too hard to make it "like" a great variety of animals. It has a bill like a duck and a body like a beaver. It's fur can also just be compared to a beaver. It's eggs are not chicken like, many animals lay eggs. Many animals also burrow, not exactly unique. All mammals suckle their young, it's not unique to platypodes.
