Thank you for doing this side by side. Nobody else compares the 2 and my wife and I were trying to decide if it was worth it. We decided on the belt drive thanks to this video!
My chain drive opener is just as quiet as a belt drive unit. They made a chain speader that is located right by the sprocket to keep it quieter than the old design. And as long as you do your annual lubrication to keep things running smooth, it should last 25 - 30 years. My third stall opener is 30 years old now.
i just replaced my craftsman half hp that was installed in 1998 with a chamberlain chain drive just today. its full chain with no cable and has that new chain spreader.. after a quick lube of the hinges it was AS quiet as the belt one . :)
Odd because I have always had the belt and it makes just as much noise as the chain. I prefer knowing when someone is opening up the garage and is home so I prefer the sound. But thanks for posting… great video !
I was about to say this as well . I like hearing the garage door opening because then I know someone is coming inside. Normally it's family but you never know!
Its funny because the actual motor sounds quieter on the belt than the chain.. It's almost like its not the actual chain that makes the noise but the actual motor in the belt driven one.. It tricks you
I am convinced and agree with you. The door noise appears to me similar but motor noise. The chain drive model giving off noticeable hum sound. Is your chain drive system use sn induction motor or dc motor?
if you want to make it quieter, go to home depot and get a tube of lucas oil products white lithium grease. Run a bead on the drive rail, and the inner trolley. It's the part that moves along the rail when the door is not attached. Hope this helps
The trolleys on my Craftsman/Chamberlain doors are both lined with nylon, and there is no lubricant needed (advised not to lube per manual) nor is the chain to be lubed ( which I also thought of doing, but either one will not be harmed if you do, it just makes an unneeded mess. The inside of the opener however is the part that's needs to be lubricated. I know most people don't want to invest the time and effort to take the cover off, but it's easier than you think. once you're in there, just take some lithium grease and dress the worm gear and steel shaft andit will quiet it some, and more importantly, last for many years. My old one is over 30 years old and runs like new.
This is an excellent demonstration. Was the belt version east to retro fit? I have 1 door. But I have the same chain drive chamberlain you have. Thinking about replacing it only because my bedroom is directly above the garage. The sound difference is stunning. Also I was looking at getting the chamberlain my Q kit, but it’s 60-80$ and the belt drive with it built in is 168-220$ . After seeing this demo I think it would be worth it to replace the whole thing . Thanks.
The door opener duty is not a heavy task, and either the chain or belts should last a lifetime (such as 30 years) even with fairly heavy use. For comparison with motorcycles; typically drive belt finals never need to be replaced (or adjusted) whereas chains need periodic adjustments, have a definite wear-out, and are noisier. Chain drive is more efficient, the small difference in efficiency is not significant for garage doors.
I kind of relate the chain sound to my childhood working in the garage with my Grandpa. However, saying that, my Boss would fire me if I designed a chain driven automation machine!
It sounds like most of the noise from the chain version is from the opener itself. So that's not really a chain vs. belt. That's a crappy little chain vs. a premium belt.
My 25 year old chain drive motor failed and I am upgrading to a new belt drive unit. Questions: is the belt zero maintenance and does the smoother operation allow the motor to last longer?
Needed some lube on the wheels. The jerking is more pronounced with the quiet belt. I eventually replaced the chain with a soft start belt driven opener which helped as well.
Well I just got a new chain version and it’s very quiet 🤫, so I don’t know, it also is a Chambering, but it’s one that are only sold by professionals that install garage doors and motors.
Our chain opener seems to close hard (I tried to adjust travel, but couldn't get it slam the ground less). Does a belt drive close more softly? Thanks.
V Phan you’ll want an opener that lists Soft Start / Stop on the spec sheet. Since making the video I replaced the chain with another belt drive model that has that feature. It’s great!
3240s LiftMaster square drive what's the best opener at that time after 25 years I got out of the industry so I don't know what they have out there right now but I can tell you one thing stay away from genie, and I'm not talking about a 19 60s television show, when I bought my house I installed a 3280 which is a high-end 3240 it has the same motor as the residential Jack shafts which they have changed the number on now but the square rail screw drive is the best chain drives are the worst if you want to replace that gear assembly every 5 years and get a chain drive sure mine is coming on 14 years old never had a problem with it it's a LiftMaster square rail screw drive. 3280
Thank you for doing this side by side. Nobody else compares the 2 and my wife and I were trying to decide if it was worth it. We decided on the belt drive thanks to this video!
Great video. I now clearly understand the difference between belt and chain. Huge noise factor difference. My neighbor will be thankful.

Thank you. This is just what I needed as hubby’s office is right above the garage.

@@dwlsml4118whats stranger is the +48 thumbs up it received. I'd do my part to fix that.
Holy cow that is a huge difference.
Wow .. having a garage built and made the right choice with the belt vs chain .. thanks for the side by side
Wow! What a huge difference it makes! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
Odd because I have always had the belt and it makes just as much noise as the chain. I prefer knowing when someone is opening up the garage and is home so I prefer the sound. But thanks for posting… great video !

Stop cheating on your wife. Kidding though I prefer a 30 second head start when mom is coming home.
Wow! I’m actually in the process of replacing my old chain unit and is why I ended up here. Just ordered one yesterday.
Great video, thanks for doing this. I have a chain driven opener and it drives me nuts. That will soon be replaced.
Sold on the belt. Thanks for doing this comparison.
Very helpful; just what I was looking for. Thanks
Your a stud for posting this!!
I was trying to find out chain or belt and based on sound, it looks like the one I have is a chain! Thanks for the video!
Just what I needed, thanks
I do like the right one it is so quiet but the left I recommend it to
Very cool I like them both

Sweet video. Really helped. Thanks.

Belt drive it is! thank you!

The noise has little to do with the chain, but the motor design. You can have the same motor design with either chain or belt.
Were your garage doors insulated? Looked like you had some type of paneling on them?? Great video
I had all three, 1-Chain, 2-Screw, 3-Belt / Noiser to Quieter
Can you post a video of the buttons next to the door that you use to open and close it
Wow dude that's a big difference
This is an excellent demonstration. Was the belt version east to retro fit? I have 1 door. But I have the same chain drive chamberlain you have. About the same level of effort.
wow, 3 years ago and it was $60-80? nowadays the ones I see are about $150-200.
I had chain version for 10 years no issue. My belt with better horse power is struggling to open my garage door . I had to keep re adjust.
1:03 SOLD! Looking at Home Depot now... $140 lowest for both types. No brainer here.
Almost seems like a lot of it's the motor. That one really hums.
Belts way better great vid and well said btw our future home in Florida may have it
So what last longer? I’m assuming the chain. Chains do stretch, but I think the belt would stretch faster & need to be replaced sooner.

Belts deteriorate, with heat, cold, and can suddenly break right? if your OK with the noise, isn't a metal link one last longer, less likely to break?
Thanks a lot.

I love chain drives
I kind of relate the chain sound to my childhood working in the garage with my Grandpa. However, saying that, my Boss would fire me if I designed a chain driven automation machine!
Chain drives are much more reliable, than belt or even "direct" (screw) drives. Topic closed.
It sounds like most of the noise from the chain version is from the opener itself. So that's not really a chain vs. belt. That's a crappy little chain vs. a premium belt.
Belt it is!

Dr MitoFit You have to replace belt from time to time.
The belt drive seems to do alot of jerking back and fourth upon closing I wonder if that puts alot of stress on wheels and hardware
Needed some lube on the wheels. The jerking is more pronounced with the quiet belt. I eventually replaced the chain with a soft start belt driven opener which helped as well.
Are the 2 has the same horsepower?
The new belts are steel cables encassed in rubber with an expected life span of 30 years.
which one will last longer?
I love you.
thx
You are doing God's work!
Does new AC Chamberlain belt drives sound amazing!
Makes you wonder why we have been putting up with chain driven for so long when the belts have got to be cheaper.
Nice. Thanks for the video. Think im switching
nice 60fps video
Quinton Aho iPhone 8 Plus
wow that belt is sooooo silent
Forget noise which one last longer...has better parts....is safer etc....
Go research it yourself.
Chains last way longer (think about how long you car tires last .....8 yrs max?---- then rubber begins to disintegrate).

@@CoollllCat Excellent. Thanks.
What model is the new opener
So what are the CONS of a belt drive: Price? Durability?
Haaa it so quiet😊
? That was mostly motor noise...??
I have a chamberlain garage door opener their quit
Anyone a reasonable cost to install belt version.
1 car garage.
No more difficult than a chain
Eh, doesn't really matter though.
Quietness is not everything. I chose durability over noise anytime.
Chains win then. Hands down.

All I care is the Garage door not failing when I drive up to park my car, noise for a few seconds can be tolerated.
