      In my experience, how people think about work is class related. People from a working class background, like my grandparents, believe in honest hard work. They believe that if you work hard at your job then your career will take care of itself. By contrast middle class people realise that your job and your career are two different things. Successful career progression is more about who you know, applying for opportunities, and talking yourself up.

    I don't find the "what about meaning and purpose" argument very persuasive. Most of the "jobs" out there are not providing meaning and purpose...they are a means to an end.
    I know many people including people where I work that just show up for a paycheck, they could care less about the actual job and they find meaning and purpose outside of work.
    If flipping burgers and mopping floors, etc. is the best we can do at providing opportunities for activity that truly does provide meaning and purpose, than that is just sad and we are not using our imaginations.
    I find this argument really only coming from those with college degrees and actual careers where they do find meaning and purpose in what they do, and they seem to want to project that onto the masses.
    But that is not the majority of people.
    We can do better.

    • @B20C0
      @B20C0 5 лет назад +55

      The point is, that UBI enables those people, it doesn't force them. E.g. in many countries around the world (the USA being a prime example) education is not free, but even if the education is free, people from poor families still have to work instead of focusing on their education 100%, which in turn makes most (but not all) achieve less.
      UBI enables those people to achieve educational goals they wouldn't otherwise be able to and in turn take better earning jobs with higher tax rates (to repay the system) and the ability to consume more.
      But even if they just sit on their asses doing nothing (which most people wouldn't do) and just buying random stuff with their UBI and paying their rent they are still more valuable than if they were just poor.
      In fact, even from a strictly capitalistic standpoint UBI makes a lot of sense, because the income gap increasing is a HUGE problem. It's leads to social unrest and to diminishing consumption which in turn hinders innovation.
      Essentially what you want to achieve is a society where every participant is able to consume produced goods while still keeping competition and reward innovation, hard work and a good education.

      Kind of like having a safety net under you while learning gymnastics or trapeze. Remove the fear of death or injury and you can soar high above the ground. People would be free to pursue their dreams. Think of a young person who wants to be an actor. If their basics are covered they’re free to take acting classes and participate in local theatre to gain experience.

    For the "life purpose" dilemma I think it's interesting to look at retirees.
    Retirees go from a life with purpose, i.e. their career or job, to having no prescribed purpose. Yet most find fulfillment through their families & hobbies & pastimes, or through voluntary or community work.
    Those that have none of these usually wither & perish.

Or when the Corporations like Google, Apple etc got a 15% tax CUT, did that help you?? At all? I already had a job, I would've been better off getting an extra $1k in my pocket and I'd bet a lot of people you know would too. Such as stay at home parents, or Grandparents taking care of grandkids. The tax money is OUR money and the benefits of an automating society, saving companies billions should be shared by all. If we don't change course, the one we're on is only going to get better for big companies and the very wealthy, anyone else will see their Health Insurance costs rise, their costs rise, the inability to get cover if you have a pre-existing condition, you know the individual income taxes are going up under Trump too right? If you don't believe me check it out and really think about who is going to benefit under the current administration..

    • @lamdao1242

      @fladave99 Mills Venezuela's problems can be traced to corruption, and incompetent management of resources. You do realise that V has the largest oil reserves in the world?
      I've lived in Bahrain, and visited UAE many times. I can assure you that Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and other middle eastern countries give generous hand outs to their citizens to keep them quiet so they don't whine about the Royal families who control everything. These monarchies don't call it UBI but the hand outs are effectively UBI. Yet, they haven't become venezuela. do you ever wonder why? Perhaps it has something to do with better money management though they too will face issues in the future.
      As for america, Goodness! You can raise taxes and cut military spending for a start. Then there is VAT. You can make VAT less regressive by exempting food and medicines. When you roll the existing monies paid for existing social welfare programmes into increase revenues, I think you will find enough money.
      People mention inflation. And it’s possible inflation could happen. But I think that we will be living in a deflationary economic environment for a while longer yet. Why? Because the cost of production will keep coming down. Why do for profit organisations use Robots, AI and other technology? Because Robots, AI and technology DRIVE DOWN COSTS of production. An AI Robot can make cars cheaper than human beings. That’s why companies do it. So, though I agree we should keep an eye open for inflation - always, I think the risk is deflation right now.
      Anyway, here's the thing. If you disagree with Yang, what's your solution to the widening income and wealth gap? What's your solution when the IOT, robots and AI can do the work of 10 humans with only 1 engineer taking care of them? What are you going to do when 60% of working age adults stop looking for a job and so don't get counted in the employment statistics? But they aren’t earning money either?
      Any suggestions?

      @fladave99 Mills , I just hired an assistant, do you know I had over 100 candidates for the one job. Unemployment rate does not take into account the people already stopped looking for jobs or people underemployed working at wages that can barely get them by and looking for better jobs. Look at the rate and what it really represents and what is included and not included. If you are so please with the economy then why all the anger? Why attack someone because they don't like their job? If you are living the life then you should not care. I take it you are not so your anger is fed from insecurities you have that you can't explain. I remember in the boom economies of when "America was great" people were much more satisfied with their lives that they had a more accepting attitude. You are not so satisfied, you need to see the real reason you have this attitude unless you were raised by neo nazis.

      Work weeks should be reduced to 10 hours per week per individual. That would make people more happy. The ones who do not work would love to work. The reason they dont work is because they are either unable physically to do 40 hours per week or because most jobs are built around a system. The people who work 40 hours or more per week are breaking down to the physical demands. Full Benefits are only given to the people who work a full 40 hours. I know alot of people on disability that would love to work a few hours per week but the job market is not able to help them. Their Disability benefits would be cut if they make more than 800 per month. Who could live off 800 per month to be honest? Many on disability are intelligent but not physically able to do a full week. Shorten work weeks and the unemployment numbers would be near zero and everyone would be happy to have a job. Why do humans need to spend all their waking hours doing a job yet some never get out of bed or leave their homes during the day because they are unable to find work due to many reasons. The more people that go back into the work force doing 10 hours per week would create jobs for everyone.

      Yeah everyone would have jobs that pay 1/4 of what these jobs used to pay. That's not a solution.
      Minimum wage and other job related policies are the reason people don't want (or even can't) hire people that produce less. The higher the minimum wage less and less youngsters get to work, the same goes for other people that produce less because of other reasons than inexperience. How can a business owner pay 100$ for 10h when X person produces less than the standard? If he could pay whatever he thought it was worth less people would be unemployed, thus reducing the weight on welfare.
      What's better? Working and receiving 50$ for 10h OR not having a job and depending on the govt money?

    No matter your political view on economics - we NEED some solution to automation. Either we deal with increasing unemployment (there's no way of avoiding it - fighting it is futile), or most people crash into inescapable poverty. And by poverty I mean being truly penniless - because they won't be able to work. At that point, what do corporations intend on doing with all of their profits? Almost no one would buy from them. People will simply be dying of hunger instead. The how can be debated - and then people's political alignment can be taken into account. Simply continuing on and ignoring the employment which is bound to increase, will lead us into a dystopian plutocracy. SOMETHING must be done. If you really hate UBI, come up with another idea that doesn't involve stopping automation - because that's impossible. Progress doesn't stop, it accelerates, like it or not. I love it, but we must be prepared. As I said, this *is* happening.

    This is a good video. I have been a supporter of the UBI idea for a couple years now. Primarily because I am 53 years old and have served in the military, have worked over 30 years of my lifetime mostly in construction but also have had to jump from job to job due to circumstance (like closings and health issues, only been fired from one job and have had over 20 "jobs"). I am physically damaged from accidents both at play and work and have a hard time finding work now because I have difficulty with many of the basic lifting tasks required by most "jobs". I do odd jobs for some cash and live with others helping the household to "earn my keep" (effectively a homeless vet). I am not allowed disability, cannot get the healthcare I need, and might have been looking forward to getting social security in 7 years but now it looks like I would have to live another 17 years to "retire." So yeah UBI would allow me to be "lazy". Sorry but I think I have earned the right to be lazy now by being a productive citizen for over a "lifetime". Yet what will most likely happen is when my situation changes again I will be homeless and another one of those that other people point at for being lazy and not wanting to work even though it appears I "could". With UBI security the weight of my current grim looking future would be lifted and I see the potential to pursue other goals like maybe teaching, or entertainment of some sort here on Utube. Myself I do not care if some people will sit around in their underwear shooting up heroin if they get a UBI. Most likely with UBI resources they won't last very long and by dying sooner will not burden society nearly as much. People need to quit evaluating things based on what has always worked in the past. As civilization progresses we need to change, adapt, and overcome. Better to do so by examining our future needs as a society than try to work it out after the riots destroy the foundations we have built.

      @piyushvaidya5086 5 лет назад +23

      Sorry. But I believe human behaviour is guided by efficiency and economics aka feasibility. Now a basic phenomenon of economics is the demand supply curve. As long as the supply for demand of low skilled jobs will be much larger than the demand itself, those jobs will be low wage. And that goes for every form of job. 30 years ago, having the knowledge of computers was very much valued, and they got much more pay over traditional older job doers. Today, just after 30 years, every kid holds a more powered computer in his hand and knows to effectively use it. So today, knowing computers is the basis of medium skilled jobs, not an exception. second, jobs are payed by their worth in the company, if the work u do in the company that contributes only 0.001% in the value of the company's income, how & why do u expect it to pay more than what ur work contributes. Are u willing to pay 50$ for a 30$ pizza even if it's ur most favourite food?no. Then why do u expect the pizza delivery guy to get 10$ rather than his valued 7$. U want people to be payed for their inability to learn & contribute as much as the world around him. U can help people who are disabled, mentally unstable or any other birth disability. But why would anyone even willingly help able handed sane people for their own created shortcomings? Especially in first world countries. But there is no discussion about UBI going on in developing & third world. It's going on in the first world, when many countries already have public education &/or healthcare. Even if it's not free, it is still very much accessible & with the help of ngos & scholarships, even affordable. Also, the justification u give for UBI is very much wrong, because even though someone's got to clean toilets, stock selves, pack Amazon orders, people do not get into those jobs thinking someones got to do menial jobs. People get into those jobs because, they are unable to learn how the world works, & therefore can't convert thing into anything of more value. We can even take a very millennial culture example like jay-z for this. He was from the shady parts of the city, was into drug selling for earning & lots of other problematic conditions. But he's almost a billionaire now. How is it that the rest of the people from his neighborhood or anyone such from first world, not be able to do such a thing,& taxpayers pay for their inability. Nice solution

      @@julian9231 if most don't want to do those jobs, such employees would have been hard to find. I think u mean to say, they would have preferred to do a better quality or better payed job, but don't have either the skill or will or resources to do it. and that is the case for pretty much 90% of employee workforce. And u say executives get payed alot like it's a bad thing. Executives are the core of the company, anyone can build a few goods, anyone can write a few lines of code & build a program, the value of a person is decided by what he controls, risks & maintains. Managing hundreds of employees, their demands, the shareholders demands for growth, the investment to growth ratio, the health of the product or service provided & continuous problems in achieving goals isnt an easy thing to do. That is why a CEO prefers to pay executives more, & not the employees, because even after incentives, gifts, benefits etc. the employee will still leave at his designated 7:30 pm off time. He won't care for doing an extra hour for the betterment of the company. Thats what executives do. They don't have time schedules. They have targets, goals & possibilities in mind. The lower or higher demand of the product doesn't harm the employee nor does he care(unless theres a lot of loss or the company shuts down), the people at the top own the shares, & it is their pockets which hurt the most, when the company faces losses & shares fall, the employee still gets his salary, his timely leave, his insurance & parking benefits & what not. Of course there are many places where CEOs demand & get much more than should have been plausible. But then again, he is in a position to demand that high of a pay, & the shareholders value him at such level. Elon musk only gives tasks & sets goals & give it to his executive, while his executive is the one that works more(physically) than elon. The emotional thing to say would be to give them both equal pay(or shares or whatever) but the company shareholders values Elon much more than the executive, she can be replaced, but Elon is the company(just an example, not very accurate but still I guess it conveys what I mean).

    I suspect UBI will contribute to the number of people pursuing a life with purpose because life choices will not have to be based solely on financial considerations. Everyone with artistic, intellectual or spiritual ambitions is free to pursue their passions. This would enable a larger number of people to subsequently share what they found with others as people love to share and inspire others with what they love themselves. But maybe it would also enable someone to quit their insurance job to become a gardener.
    Personally I didn't study art and philosophy for financial fears. With UBI, I would have. So this could enrich our countries cultural wealth.
    One thing is not Adressed: this will just highlight the importance of education to inspire raising free and autonomous individuals which should be the goal anyways! Young people that are not merely there to feed the needs of the market! So it might get bumpy like every major shift in the past was but it will be progress and could mean a new mode of living and experiencing life. Watch "Thrive" the documentary if you're interested. All the best to you and us.

In fact, if one were to look at my records, it'd be obvious how bad they are. It would help with my continuous dental bills. I'm continuously on a monthly paid plan to pay them off.
    Not to mention, my feet are becoming problematic in terms of pain. Eventually, it'll get so bad, I may not be able to do any kind of hard labor job. I could use the $1,000 to help with that. Possibly save up for surgery, as various treatments are only doing so much.
    Heck, maybe I could use the $1,000 a month to start a small business online. One that focuses on some of my other skills that wouldn't require hard labor. Perhaps make it replace my current hard labor job altogether.

The idea that Joe Biden is leading in polling is hilarious. This is directed polling to get a given outcome. Calling Landlines, Asking Questions that get a set response. Sampling specific demographics and leaving out others.
      There is only one reason for this discrepancy. The 1% or corporatist MSM and The Banking Industry are setting up the Voter for failure, by voting against their own best interest. The 1% would rather have another 4 years of Trump, or a return to the "Good Years" of Obama's presidency. They are terrified of anything that will directly benefit the 99% of Americans, because it affects their Wealth Accumulation.
      Btw, I have been thinking of this for the past 14 years after I was laid off, because a $250,000 computer system came in and replaced 1/3 (about 10 / 12 people, some who had been there 10 years from the beginning) of the employees in the company with 3 kids out of college to manage the system, who cost less. I can tell you though, there is no reason in Holland to be scared to be out of work. The only thing is social pressure. Which might diminish if most people get on that system, which will come if most people lose their jobs. A thing not happing right now. So that is one flaw, which is not present at this moment, will make this system fail. But being without a job here doesn't have consequences other than your dating life basically.

    The idea of a guaranteed basic income is hated by many but it's something that people will have to learn to live with. I see a lot of animosity concerning this subject (mainly driven by jealously, the standard Canadian reaction), however in the near future most jobs won't be there for the people. AI and automation is going to replace the work of most people. Possibly as much as 65% of the current workforce will find themselves replaced by automation by 2025. There used to be a saying in Britain in the years when their woolen exports financed the empire: "when the looms weave by themselves, man will be free". The question is- free to do what? The answer should be: Free to grow on a personal level, and as a society free to explore the boundaries of existence as this phenomenal technology grows. This will be a monumental change for humanity and it should be embraced, not feared or loathed by petty people who can only see it as "someone is getting free money, damn them". Eventually, everyone will be in the same boat. Automation is the only way, in the long run, for humans to advance in leaps and bounds and eventually be able to reach for the stars. Petty jealousies will only add an unnecessary level of angst to those who will be first to be making the transformation to the inevitable post-work world. Many people see this new government policy as being akin to Communism. Well it is; however communism is what you will have when automation puts everyone on the same jobless playing field. Let's just hope that this time the communal good is put first and the world won't have to repeat the horrors of the past century. Because, if the communal good is not put first and foremost, it would be only too easy for the world to descend into a mindset that views the non-working classes as 'useless-eaters'. The automation is coming like it or not. Learn how to embrace this huge change in a positive way. It will be a major upheaval and society would do well to realize in advance that there is no stopping it nor should there be. It would be instructive for all to read the 7th paragraph of "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" by Kipling, and see if we can't strive to do better this time around.
    I'm not a socialist and I don't believe in socialism or communism, but the jobs won't exist in the future and therefore the people won't either unless they are given the means to exist. The same automation that will eliminate the jobs can provide for the people. To not realize this or to be opposed to this eventuality is like being opposed to free energy systems because it sounds too much like 'socialism'.
    Only when mankind can progress beyond physical work required for survival (and that's what today's world of employment is regardless of its high technology and fancy titles and ability to work a day while keeping one's hands clean) can we begin to really develop our true potential. The automation is coming, and everyone should be welcoming of it. It will be a tumultuous time, some people will see a reduction in their standard of living but many other people around the world will be able to jump straight from a hard labour/tribal/agrarian life into the better life afforded by these advancements in technology, but it will be a necessary growing pain of the human race. If we fail to accept this transition in the proper way we will be doomed as a species.

    3. People will demand higher wages or even worst, they will be lazy and will not work - It will certainly happen at a very small % of people, but the majority of them will tend to use the money wisely. Ask yourself, if you have extra $1K, will you stop working?
    4. Remember Amazon paid 0 dollars in taxes to the US government! I'm not even American bt I certainly hope this model would work and would be beneficial to my own country in the future! :)

      That is an aspect, that I find to be constantly over-estimated. Just because automation may be possible on paper, doesn't mean that it will be economically prudent. Because getting rid of all low to lower qualification types of jobs and fully robotize them would be over-engineered nonsense.
      Take a parcel delivery driver for example. Between sorting all the packages in accordance with the planned route (however small and big the packages may be individually), moving them into the truck, driving said route, navigating his/her way towards whatever front porches, apartment buildings etc, he/she is presented with, avoiding and/or calming down the occasional dog, taking care of delivering the package intact, responding to on the fly customer inquires ("I did not order that! This seems broken! Where is my other package?), taking detours, responding to people not being at home and depositing their parcel as save as possible, noticing the suspiciously curios guy looking over, as he/she does that …….. etc. etc. etc.
      These are just the intricacies, that I can think of off the top of my head. And I am sure that there are many more that you would not know about, unless you are a delivery person. Many of these tasks may be relatively easy to be automated individually. But given the insanely diverse multitasking nature of what a parcel driver does (as simple as many of these tasks may be individually), a robotic replacement would be complete overkill!
      People are flexible. Robots are not. They are task specific machines - like everything that is programmed to do something and that “something” only. Even the much fabled “machine learning” is highly task specific.

      It's the insane belief that you can just create instruments for the exchange of value, without creating any actual value. It's the fallacy that always leads to runaway hyper-inflation and millions of starving humans, like klockwork.
      Remember, the government has nothing, everything it gives away it have to steal first, or falsify. UBI can only come from either using the state monopoly on violence to back perpetual extortion ("taxation") or systematic forgery.("printing money").
      All of it is based on the violence-based cult of statetheism and it's ad Verecundium fallacy (belief in and argument from false authority).

    • @dumyjobby
      @dumyjobby 5 лет назад +1

      @@untrainedprofessionals2374 it's all of this things but I mean socialist countries are those who either have control and monopoly over certain important market sectors and have strong government control over the market. I don't support public schools, medication, welfare etc. I understand the importance of public goods such as roads and natural parks and I cannot figure a efficient way to run them in a free market, the military also i believe is in the domain of the government but other than that I don't think the government should give any other "free" services. Government was never able to match free market services, neither for quality nor price. Some sort of mild socialism ( like one in Scandinavian countries) can be sustained only of there is a very strong free market economy and also those countries have figured out that having government monopoly is not such a good idea, so they have private offerings where government has to compete with private in terms of cost and offering. But calling those countries socialist is a misnomer since they are very much free market economies. Also remember that the public debt is starting to be a burden even there and free services are becoming slowly unsustainable.

    • @dumyjobby
      @dumyjobby 5 лет назад +1

      @UCy68wAWb_8X6l_-4xABN-Yw the sad reality is that the taxes we pay don't cover the government experience, this is why governments go into debt, also this is also where most politicians fight to get votes bidding up who can offer most " free" staff. But nothing is free and the government always does a very good job at squandering money on useless programs that more often than not have an opposite effect of what was intended. It is all about incentives, a private entity has limited money and if it doesn't achieve the targeted results, quickly lose investors and usually goes into bankruptcy, a government program never do such a thing because when it fails the only reason they come up with is that they didn't receive inaf money, this is why a failing private entity fails and is replaced by a better one, and a failing public entity grows over time. I would rather have businesses not pay money for government programs and give that money to the workers in form of stocks. That would greatly incentivise people to seek jobs, stay in such jobs and also have a vested interest in how the business is run since thru share ownership they are also part owners. This is how I would like to see workers owning the means of production, through part ownership of business, not through a government entity who owns everything in the name of the people

      Getting people to work is essential. Right now millions of Americans are addicted to heroin or some other paralyzing drug, leaving factories all over the country in desperate need of workers. Some companies even offer free drug rehab for people to get them to work. There are millions of job openings in every sector, where automation does not pose a threat (at least for now and for not for while). We need to tackle the drug addiction problem, and get people to work with a livable wage, universal healthcare, low cost daycare, and free college. Bernie is old, but wise. Look at the happiest countries on earth, most of them are democratic socialist countries, with no UBI.

    Perhaps the main focus to solve the 'meaning' problem for people could be best addressed by focusing on the education system. Educating the entire population, creating systems to engender and reward curiosity could go a long way toward smoothing this freight train of disruption that is barreling down on us at breakneck speed.
    What sets of problems and questions can we pose and offer rewards for solving that would reach all levels and varieties of ability ?
