As an American, I would like to apologize about our obsession with 7/11 in Japan. We really aren't used to being able to eat fresh food from there, and not getting sick. This is like a genuine thrill ride for us.😂
Love the comfortable shoes coment! It's an underappreciated advice, especially if you only see photos which focus on beautiful photos over sightseeing!
The JR Rail pass is for 7, 14 or 21 days. If you fly into Tokyo then you can use a 3 day subway pass (unlimited travel 72h, 1500Y). After you've done the basic Tokyo things (while half jetlagged) you can activate your JR pass and travel to Hiroshima (2 days) and work your way back to Tokyo via Kyoto (2 days), Nara (1/2 day) and then back to Tokyo. From there you could take day trips to Nagano (snow monkeys), Niigata etc or more Tokyo things.
If you fly in on an international flight to Tokyo and have to switch to a domestic flight, be aware that the domestic airport closes at night. So if you have a layover you are planning to spend at the airport and didn't book a room at the airport hotel, stay in the international airport to avoid being kicked out of the domestic airport at I think it was 11pm, and catch the morning bus to the domestic airport at I think 5am. 😊
Agreed. I carried my own little trash bag everyday! But when I had food at the stalls I just kindly asked asked the owners if I could discard their rubbish there 🙂
I survived off 7-11 onigiri last time i visited. Forgot how much i paid, but I'm sure it wasn't that bad lol. I was probably more concerned about the costs of sit-down restaurants, now *those* can get expensive.
No joke about the shoes. If you plan to do any amount of walking this is very mandatory. Use nice shoes designed for walking! Side note: I brought my hiking sandals with me that I had for 5 years and they never failed me. Two days of walking in the rural areas of Japan had these things falling apart. I joke that it must be something in the Japanese soil that don't like American footwear, but.....
I guess if you don't know the difference supermarket 'pre cooked' is ok. But in general conbini is better. It depends on your supermarket. In terms of quality & price, super -> Combini -> depachika.

About buying tickets online for the Shinkansen, do it only if you have a good sense of time and can arrive on time. If you don’t, better buy them at the machines.
Precisely why I plan my trip and book in advance. Queues can be long at the counter and travelling as a big group it can be hard to get seats together when you book on the spot/last minute.
#2 nooo noo noo! Do NOT buy online! I booked my tickets online and got a qr code to scan at the station's machines to pick them up (why book online if you have to pick up the tickets anyway?) But it became worse: I couldn't pick up the tickets in kusatsu, because that's JR-west and not JR-toukai. So I had to go to Kyoto first in order to get my tickets. The websites do NOT warn you that you depart from a station you cannot pick up your tickets or that the final station is not a JR one (so you can't check out with your suica/icoca etc) So no! Do NOT buy your tickets online! It's a nightmare!

You're so right about the supermarket tip. Onigiri and wagashi are top tier there, for about 60% of the konbini price. Seasonal wagashi are especially lovely! P.S one day in Osaka in January, I walked 42,000 steps 💀 daily average for the trip was more like 24,000 but still. Ooft.

@cecullen I spent less than £1000 (including flights from London) for 1 week about 8 years ago. It's not super cheap but it is a very different but relatively safe place to visit. I saved most of this by walking to/from work (30min ea) instead of taking the bus for a year. Even if you can't afford it right now, if it interests you, you could spend a rainy afternoon just planning ideas for a potential trip and it might be feasible sooner than you think. There is a lot of info online on how to get around and what to experience. One thing about Japan is that 'things just work'.
don't buy tickets online, buying them on the spot is super easy, no extra charges, and allows you to be more flexible with your time. this one is not an advice just advertisement
Not when you are about fainting from the heat during high summers. I have taken multiple taxi rides that were short, one even less than 2 mins, the guy didnt even question why, just drove us and dropped us off. Prices depends from where you are coming, compared to where i live the taxi prices in japan are a joke, a joke as how cheap they are compared to taking a taxi where i live.
It’s because we have roads and parking lots. Japan has “maybe the car can fit if I bring in the mirrors” and tiny paid lots scattered where there seem to be 20sqft next to vending machines.

#1 i know you’re there and you wanna see as much as possible but you really need 5days Tokyo, 5 days Osaka, minimum
That’s what I’m doing :)
As for me, 2 days in Tokyo. 3 days in Osaka and additional 3 days in Kyoto. Just me.
Five days in Osaka is way too much, just go to Kyoto instead. There’s nothing really to see in Osaka
yes, it's ok for 4 days in Tokyo if you came with a fat woman, I spent 8 days and that's not enough for me 😂
