My pro tips of surviving are to build a bed 1st thing like Gem did so you don't have to deal with monsters. And also, don't go caving, go strip mining. Remember to always place your torches 14 blocks apart or less to avoid spawning hostile mobs, and always on your right or left in caves (pick one obviously) so that when they are on the other side of you you know you're headed out. Once you have more confidence you can take more risks, you can also always lower the difficulty. Good luck!
