For closer marking when transferring the measurement use the utility knife, avoids a lose mortised openings, the pencil marks away from the actual measurement. The knife marking is spot on, for a better tight hinge fit. I’m disabled and sick now so I can’t produce how to vids. But I was a wood craftsman for 35 years. Learning is a blessing stay on it to sharpen your skills. Bless you all. Thank You for posting.
Hi Henry thanks for you help and when doing it by hand I fully agree and do the same myself however when using a router jig the marking is just a guide the jig if made well will give you a good fit every time, thanks for watching and you stay safe
Thanks Shaine yeah apart from being a great heat source its also a great way to get rid of all my wood off cuts, that is the ones thats to small to ever be of use. Hay thats for watching
Good stuff...... If the strip of wood used to clamp the jig to the door was positioned on the other side, the actual hinge opening side of the jig, with a small cut out to allow the router cutter to pass by....then this jig could be used on any thickness of door as the hinge would be positioned correctly from the Butt edge evey time (for this type/style/size) of hinge, as it stands it will only work on this thickness of door as a thinner door would cut a wider recess (for the hinge leaf) across the door edge and a thicker door the recess would be too shallow. Basically ...as we watch the video....screw the clamping strip on your (HingeButt) side of the jig and not the viewers side.
Wow Ningis21 you've been looking in my cutting room how amazing is that the jig you discribed is already videos, cut and ready to publish next weekend, I know I asked for ideas but never expected mind reading well done mate and yes it's a fantastic idea I will try add a heads up to you at the end of it before it gose live
I liked the video, but I have some suggestions re; video production that will improve watchability, thus increasing viewership. We can't see alot of what you're doing, and the head mounted camera is a bit jiggy. Mount a camera above, then in post production zoom into the spots to pay attention to. Also, some of the sound quality is poor because your walls are too reflective. Try cleaning up the audio by dubbing over the sound where the quality is lacking. Overall, I liked the content. Thanks for this, it answered my questions.
Great, avoids me having to lug around the large manufacturers jigs. Will give this a try. Will this be good for consistent daily use? Also, do you have an idea for a jig that would be used on a hung door liner/frame?
Hi Ron first thanks for watching as for if it will last I guess it's down to what you make it out of, I used bathroom wall board with is a very strong board but I guess you could use many stronger boards or like me just make a new one if it goes as it's very quick to make, David
Hi Andy sorry mate but no i don't work that way i just go from the minds eye and chip and chop till it works i guess with this the basics for sizing is the hinge you want to sink the rest is up to you no set size just what works for you
@@clarkspiemuncher24 Hi Mark no in this case I use a guide bush on the router base if you watch at the start as I calculate the size needed you will see it which should help
@@dmgladden thanks for the reply david, does that mean your jig is over sized to allow for the guide bush on the router ? i have used a trimmer in the past by putting the guide on it and chiselling out the ends to start but never used a jig
i dont think i watched this video and am asking questions i think form an earlier video of yours i watched and now i see what you mean. looks like i need to find a guide plate for my katsu router
Subscribed but shame about the cut at 8:17. Makes people quite suspicious that a lot of fiddling went on in the background as the clamps were repositioned. Just saying.
Hi and thanks for the sub, I do try to keep my videos as short as possible and in this case I had checked the hinge fit and found I needed another mil more as reset and cut that bit that's all it is just me cutting out anythink I thinks not needed
Hi Dave yes sorry if only for the camera, personally I have good proximity detection due to spending my life working without guards but it's not good practice to show me doing it on video
Not bad....all i need are: -Calipers -Table Saw -Chop saw -Pillar drill -Band saw -Belt sander -Clamps -Corner punch oh and the router.......hmm think i'll just stick with my hammer and chisel :)
You will need a wet stone for your chisels , cold water and a belt sander for buggered chisels , a Mallet for your hammer , a strop .....down the garden and back , bottle of vodka and a bible.
How about making a jig so you can fit over door stop so you can clean up old hinge cutouts or put an extra hinge for heavier doors, without having to take door stops off!!, challenge 😱
Still took to the chisel to finish the recess, the art of chiselling is being lost! Super easy!! £50 for a door and £300 (ish) to recess some hinges 😂 , but good though 👍

Love your no nonsense 'don't over complicate things' approach. Having watched this, i'm off to the workshop to make one! Thanks.
Thank you i do my best and thanks for watching
Not over complicating it would’ve meant a flush trim bit
You are the only guy i know who has a rayburn in his workshop ! Proper class that lad - love it 👌🏼

Great video Dave! Robin clevertts knocking these jihs out for 40 quid each and you have given us them for free!! Nice one!
Your welcome and thanks for watching
£27 plus postage.
@@mikehunt4375 wow that alot for a bit of scrap, still you can make your own now lol
And people are buying them 😂😂😂😂
Great job Dave, couldn't argue with how you made that jig, simple and effective and you have a great way of explaining everthing
Hi Gerard very kind of you to say so and am glad you found it interesting
Inset rare earth magnets on the clamping side and have metal shims for fine tuning the jig. Well done, love the whole process. Hello from Canada. :D
Waiting for the quick and easy part
great vid - real life in all aspects of trouble shooting and fine tuning.
Thankyou dave, genius invention saved me so much money also full guide on hoe to use the router cheera mate

Isn't the fence on the wrong side? So you can use it on thicker doors?
Log burner in the workshop luxury!!!!
Yes it's great but I'd have to say it's a must for a none insulated brick building in Scotland lol
How about the jig for the jamb?
Could you do this without a bush for the router?
Hi great videos you have, one question could this be used to cut out a mortice joint on a door lock?
Thank you much appreciated.
Spotless workshop sir! Very impressive!
Thank you kind Sir it takes a lot of work
Spot on David great little video thanks again. 🍺🍺👍👍😷

Sorry don't understand the question
