He's not just some evil character that you need to defeat, he's a king that you need to overcome, to prove yourself. Doesn't mean that he's the strongest opponent you'll face, but more like a test of how far you have come.

But in being friends and protectors of dreamland they know they will always test one another and give the other an oppurtunity to grow and become better, which in my opinion is what a good rival should do. The thing I love the most about Dedede's theme is that it is being made since the first Kirby game. Each game increased it by adding something more. You can hear it better in compilations. But it's amazing, I've never seen other videogame bosses do that
