As most of the videos in this series are showing, my initial movement, and the most important thing for me to do at the moment of an attack, is to move my body off line and away from the threat. Before we worry about our hands and what to grab and what techniques we're trying to do, before we can do any of that, we have to learn how to get off line and how to move our body, our hips and our legs, before you worry about the hands. So in the very beginning, I'm going to use hanmi, which is a very thin stance in Aikido, it's not a terribly wide stance, both heels are almost on the same line, take a comfortable step back, one of the first things that you'll see is irimi, which literally means to enter, and basically just looks like a step forward. So irimi one step forward, irimi step forward.
So in Aikido you generally consider the movement to be very circular, which is true, your hips are moving in a circle, but the feet are moving on a very linear fashion, so irimi, irimi. The next set of tai sabaki or body movement that we're gonna see is tenkan. Tenkan, basic hanmi, pivot the hips and step straight back, pivot the hips and step straight back. Again like in irimi this is a very linear foot movement, they move backwards on a line, not a large circle. So we're keeping our feet close together, in a linear form. The other side, pivot step back, tenkan, tenkan, tenkan.
So the next series or set of tai sabaki that we use quite often is kaiten, and kaiten is literally just a pivot. So just going to turn my hips, the feet stay relatively close to where they began. Kaiten, kaiten, kaiten. So it's not a terribly complicated group of movements, we've got three basic steps irimi, tenkan, kaiten. So with a partner, you can generally see how a lot of the techniques look a little confusing, shomen uchi, this is a lot of movement. When you break it down, irimi, tenkan, kaiten, kaiten, irimi. So just using those three steps that we've learned, we can execute larger techniques. Shomen uchi, irimi, tenkan, kaiten.
So right now ikkyo ura, irimi, tenkan, irimi, tenkan, kaiten, irimi, tenkan, kaiten. So many of the techniques that we do in Aikido look very complicated, but once you get the basic steps down and figure out how to arrange them in various orders, the Aikido techniques become much more simplistic. Tai sabaki, basic body movement. Хобби
This guy makes well shot, concise, easy to follow videos that are airy and nice. I like how he does his thing and doesn't disrespect anyone. And he has crisp aikido technique.
A reminder to the commenters, an Aikidoka would never challenge a MMA fighter, because Aikido is about getting out of a fight, not getting into one. That's what Ueshiba made it for.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love it
Yeah that was what my 2nd Dan sensei taught me as well back when I was still practicing Aikido... He said as much as possible run away from a fight.
I feel that this is true until it is unavoidable, however, an MMA fighter will most likely go back to his roots and fight by the rules of MMA, Aikido can take a practice of taking out the knees, going for the eyes, and throat all within a fluid movement. So I guess it would just depend on whether your fight would be in a ring or on the street.
Just what I wanted! A basic explanation of the basic turns/movements in Aikido. Thank you!
I have had many years of Karate Shotokan, and I acquired quite a striking technique; Later on, I trained Aikido and learn that no matter how good your striking game is, due to the nature of Aikido, the more power one applies or charges with, the easier it is to apply Aikido techniques. I believe it would be a great mind opener and a tremendous asset for you as a wrestler. Cheers!
How would Aikido work against Taekwondo?
Having studied various forms of kenjutsu over the last two decades, and knowing Osensei's pre-Aikido reputation as a swordsman, I love to see the obvious influence of sword movement translated to empty handed techniques...and I love seeing how smoothly you execute them.
I loved this comment. Aikido actually are born from Jo and Bokken (sword and spear)
If you have a chance, check out Nishio Sensei's style of Aikido. It is very intence with swordwork.
Thank you for your dedication and spending time to demonstrate these movements. The pattern/kata is good.
I would like to make several points if you don’t mind.
Before moving and all the way through the movement also I would suggest you lower your centre/posture, otherwise you are trying to walk over the top of your hip, it would also ground you energy/weight.
From what I can see for the majority of time you have your weight on your back foot. It would need to be on your front foot, about 70 to 30%
I believe you probably know that anyhow because of using the boken.
When you move and land try not to raise the heel, but, it is almost sliding the foot along the tatami. (Retaining the lowered posture). I believe the heel is raised for iaido.
For example from 2:00, when you land pleases notice you have your weight on you “bent back leg”. It needs to be on your front bent leg with a straiter back leg. - 70% front - 30% back for posture. This is very important for strength. Shizentai - natural posture - boken posture.
You would need to finish the movement in a “forward attitude” e.g. from 1:39 to 1:39 almost one second, is a good example of how your posture should be, then you move out of it into a bad habit.
Your attention, focus and weight needs it be forward on the front foot -70 - 30, about.
(Moving backwards with your attention, focus and weight forward = forward attitude. Otherwise someone can take advantage of your backward movement and keep you going very easily. All of this is done with the lowered centre.
From 1:58 to 2:09 is a fine example of incorrect posture big time! A good example of what not to do. It should be as we mentioned above.
And from 1:22 on, the "Tenkan”, starting and “leaving” your arm out at length. You would need to move towards it a fraction - torifune, bring the hand, palm-up to your centre and then your tenkan, in posture as above. If someone grounded held onto it you would not move them.
I will need to finish here. There is more. You need to have words with your sensei (this is Aikido 101).
I hope you will investigate this info. I text this to move us on. Who want's to stand still!
I have put myself on the line for much criticism.
My basic RUclips channel is fudo9 if you need to let fly!
I saw many videos of high graded teachers of aikido. I think that Mike jones has the best way to teach this martial art. i really congratulate him and i wish he will make more videos to let practitionners reach higher levels.
Hi, same here! I am doing Shotokan Karate and Aikikai Aikido, and I think the two arts complement each other wonderfully. Like the hand position in Jion... hard and soft.
An excellente job. Thank you so much Jones sensei.
0:44 irimi (what others might call "ayumi ashi")
1:11 tenkan (others call it "koho tenkan")
1:51 kaiten (others call it "tenkan ashi")
Beautiful dojo you have.
I APPRECIATE. Sensei Jones. Now I know Tai Sabaki. I was missing all the right technique, but mainly the pivoting of the hips.
I just started Aikido. It's very interesting and there are a lot of subtle details that you have to constantly be aware of. I'm in the beginner class so we're just learning kaiten and ukemi. Love it!
So after 6 years , what belt are you now?
So after 9 years , what belt are you now?
So after 10 years, what belt are you now?
great explanations and demonstration.
Aikido is a wonderful style- awesome movements and very effective as well.
Thanks for the lesson
This makes me want to come back! ❤️
As the master said it's fun like holding other persons hand and twist it irine , tenkan , kaitin
Excelente demostración Sensei!
Knees should be over toes. Proper Hanmi provides stability and strength in movement. You are in back posture throughout your movement. Knees need to be bent. No dynamic movement can come from straight legs.
Awesome job.
I appreciate the theory behind tai sabaki, and would like to believe it is effective for self-defense.
Nice kokyu nage. I was wondering if Howcast would be making any aikido videos. I'm definitely interested in seeing more.
hey since you guys are doing martial arts now, could you please do judo? with videos like how to train for judo and some of the techniques? thank you
this was very informative, even for someone studying two years
I saw a lot of videos and I tell you that you are one of the best instructors! If I livied in New York I`d take your lessons.
agreed, Sensei Mike Jones is an excellent teacher
Thanks great demonstration.:)
Well done!
Awesome, does "tenkai" mean the same thing as " kaiten "?
Thanks ❤
molto chiaro e istruttivo...bello bello
Hi. :> Thanks for showing us that!
per difendersi dalle prese dell'aikido, arti e schiena molto flessibili e elastiche,in tutte le direzioni dello spazio, oltre alla importanza di muscolatura molto forte per opporre resistenza muscolare, alle prese dei praticanti di aikido.
Beautiful
I fully agree that you find practising Aikido weird, with your Kyokushin background. In the beginning, for sure. Maybe later, you are able to make a mental split between the two activities. Me, I find that Aikido mixes very well with my Shotokan karate (light contact, larger ma-ai, based on timing). Of course, I am looking for similarities not for differences (glass half full/half empty), Fwiw, from a Shotokan point of view Kyokushin also looks a bit ridiculous (not criticism, just observation).
If only real life worked like that...beautiful art
Important!
Great but isnt your back and head supossed to stay straight 24/7?
Beautifull
Cool
i was about to request for aikido XD
Aikido is good
I take aikido I went through a lot of difficulties but I stuck with it.
Pit it?
How long do you practice these steps?
Until you die or have to go to the bathroom, whichever comes first.
a nice video, domo arigato sensei
the uke is like a silk scarf. He is the natural
merci
You're kind of making his point.
UFC IS a sport. It HAS rules.
Martial Arts are NOT sports. There are no rules, and most of them are designed to be very deadly.
Sports, even ones derived from martial arts, are not deadly. They're flashy, and often violent, but if they were deadly, they wouldn't be around long.
Aikido is a martial art. It's not about "winning" a match. It's about surviving (and hopefully not killing/maiming your attacker in the process).
The skills used in UFC can be deadly if used outside the hexagon. Your statement is fallacious.
@@mightowgentlemensclub6806 true
For me, aikido is also designed to idealy not harm the uke, but to solve the conflict without any losers. This because the conflict is not solved when someone loses and turns bitter, it is just postponed.
That is the goal from my understanding. To defeat the conflict, not the opponent.
Thus Aikido and MMA has different usages and goals and should not be compaired.
@@mightowgentlemensclub6806 it’s the Octagon, not the hexagon.
@@animallover7072 The heck if I care.
Aikido is bullshido no matter geometry.
:D That's awesome.
Good techniques aikido stace technology fight self defense
great stuff. btw, your uke seems unwilling to participate :)
Isn't what you're explaining as kaiten called tenkai?
Marc Selman Tenkai is the turning one with the step, referred to here as Tenkan. At least from what I can find on tenkai on the net
It's important to know that aikido is considered one of the most dangerous martial arts in the world
probably because of the joint locks that can break arms
I'm sure i would love to have that done to me. Not that i know anything.
And the nerve locks ;)
Zynai dangerous martial art which never works
Dangerous to the person who practices it and thinks it works!
Ty for share ,. training for 5th kyu ,. :) greets ReRiX,. wish an nice day ,. pls stay well.
How so? I know there's a lot of speculation about the validity of aikido, but I'm studying two different schools - Wadokai and Aikikai. It looks (and sounds) like these guys are demonstrating Aikikai, if that holds any significance for you. XP I could go on and on, but I really am curious as to why you don't think aikido would work in a street fight. I'm not here to judge, or anything. I really do like hearing and understanding other viewpoints.
Best defense is to not be where your opponent's attack is going
That is quite correct. On the practicality scale, Kyokushin is right up there. On the other hand, how many people are willing to accept the bruises and injuries that come from full-contact, full-force Kyokushin sparring? Not me. And how many Kyokushin people do Kyokushin up their 80s? In Aikido, that is no unusual at all. You can scale it down and make it a life.long activity. So why always these p1ssing contests? Just take is for what it is... a graceful and beneficial martial-based activity.
I got the grasp of this very easily maybe because ive studied other martial arts before for people who havnt learned to balance or keep yourself in the right position this can be quite difficult
Chuck Norris's main training was in Aikido :D
Mike jones, is the better instructor for me, I learn move
So my question is, how do the Sabaki techniks help you in a street fight? All I see here is choreography.
@DaSolidAce As an ex-Aikidoka myeslf, I can confirm that suspicion
3:15 his partner looks angry
Fatian Berisha
No
Fatian Berisha
R u even still on RUclips
pattern of the torus ...
Sorry ,but you are tottally wrong. Chuck Norris trained in korea in 1958 in Tan Soo Do. at Osan Air Base, Norris was a air policeman
I know because I joined his school in
1959 and the instructor was Captian[ Korean Army] Lee. Norris may have trained in Aikido at a later time ,but it wasn't his main art, Maybe you are thinking about Steven Segal . It is simple just search Chuck Norris on Wikipiedia every thing is there. Check out Steven Segal also.
well because i'm a wrestler and and i feel as if i got a good striking game so i would be able to avoid this technique
Good luck doing this in a bar fight lmao you’ll get absolutely smoked and be picking up your teeth from the floor 💀
what the hell kind of attacks is he defending against?!
He is demonstrating a basic movement. The attack used in this demonstration is called shomen-uchi, and is a front "karate-chop" to the forehead which corresponds to a straight forward strike to the head with a katana (sword). Most Aikido techniques can also be used against katana. So quite a hellish attack indeed.
John doe This video is just about 3 basic movements which you use in a lot of techniques. What he was doing was showing that what looked to be complicated footwork was actually just 3 basic steps strung together in various sequences.
We used to get people from a number of disciplines coming into our Aikido dojo and footwork was the biggest problem for many of them. In Aikido the footwork not only moves you out of the way of the attacks but also increases your power by utilizing your hips far more than many other styles do.
As Sam said the sword version of that attack looks way more impressive....we used to practice against it with Shinai and, once you were past yellow belt, they were pretty much full force strikes (which really hurt without armour)
+SasakiNadeshiko It's roots were the Samurai's unarmed combat for when they were disarmed or their katana got broken etc. Also if you move off the line rather than blocking it leaves that arm (or sword) free to strike and you'll normally be to the side of your opponent meaning they might be able to block but can't use the other hand against you.
+SasakiNadeshiko I think Websters defines defense as "getting out of the line of attack."
move mybody off and away of the attack, but the idea is that you look likle dancing but the movement is linear. killerin otherwords
Rude people are everywhere- Utube is no exception
*_______* this would not work in a street fight
i kind of just find aikido to be too much in the way of practiced impracticality. i know that there is some very useful things to be gained from it, like footwork. Aikido really acquires good footwork to be developed and honed. and they do show some great technique. but i think that alot of what they call practical and applicable in a real fight, just wouldn't stand up. but then again i may not be looking in the right places.
Osu! from Kyokushin
I know, I hate it... All my teachers make it look so easy

thumbs up who saw that thing in the left corner
Irimi OK and how about ura? Why not to show the whole picture in an otherwise excellent presentation? Paul, 67, retired instructor of Karate
This is meditation not martial arts
i didn't mean to bash the martial art if thats how it was taken, nor to add to the "pissing contest" but i just meant to state my argument as to why i would feel uncomfortable practicing aikido, tp my mindset i like to know what im doing will work as long as i can. but i might also not be doing full contact tournaments into my 80s if i make it that long :P
TheOdd1sOut? Anyone?
I think some of the bad press towards aikido recently comes from the fact that it takes longer to learn and master than just about any other martial art. But once you can glean the principles from the specific techniques and then apply those fluidly in a fight, that's going to be an awesome thing. But our culture doesn't value putting the time and patience into such a thing to get the eventual benefits. Yes or no?
Or the simple fact it would never work in the real world lol try do this in a bar fight you’ll get completely smoked and be picking up your teeth from the floor
from what I understand it's not geared toward what really happens in emotion driven, angry fights. It's probably great for fighting certain techniques but not raw power
Was he speaking German?
he look mad
Yea whatever
first to fail at life
I want to see u use that in the UFC , and see how good the Aikido is.....
I am practising Aikido, and I know about small joint locks. But a) Aikido is not all small joint locks, and b) you claimed that MMA practitioners don´t know Ukemi. Ludicrious!
By the way, lot of armbars in MMA are actually joint locks (jujigatame being a typical one).
Why don´t you just enjoy your Aikido white belt class and spare us the hype.
well so is punching someone in the face repeatedly, but you my friend need to read the rules of the ufc again.

Yeah like this would work in real streetfights, hahahh who does attack you like they did in video, even if somebody did, they'd resist. This would barely work against weaker untrained fighter!
They do shomenuchi for training purposes only.
MrMattias87 I'm talking about street fights. I've been in several street fight and trust me all aikido stuff i learned didn't work and simply you don't have time to do that(and even if you have, anybody would resist and punch you good) Only full contact martial art can help you good(but that depends on individual)for streets!
Um but Aikido is full contact, Maybe Aikido was probably not for you. However just because Aikido didn't work for you it doesn't mean that Aikido is useless. That's just narrow minded to think that.
Also you should realize that the aim of Aikido is not to enter in a fight (especially in a street fight). I practice Aikido too so I'm sorry to say but I disagree with you.
However I'm not gonna bother to defend Aikido because obviously you've made your decision. But as long as you stick to that decision you will always have a poor understanding of Aikido.
Not being rude here I'm just being honest.
MrMattias87 hahahhaha you are stupid. aikido is NO-CONTACT martial art. Is aikido in MMA? NO. because it doesn,t work.Judo is also defensive martia art,but still it is full contact and judo works perfectly. It's not me,I have benn in hundreds of fights and lost only 2 because i studied boxing, muay thai, krav maga and judo...(just some techniques). I never heard anyone being a bad ass with aikido.all aikido brown belt guys I've ever met, couldn't do anything when i was resisting and fighting better than untrained fighter.trust me aikido sucks !!!!
Igor Popovic realize that resisting majority of aikido's moves will result in broken bones and dislocated joints. aikido is a contact move and there are some in mma, just a much more watered down practical version of it.
Sorry but that is plain nonsense.
It is hype like this that is Aikido`s own worst enemy.
