- This video demonstrates the Russian GP-5 Gas Mask. A lot of technical data, how to use and the capabilities of it.
There is some question as to whether these are safe. The mask is perfectly safe, but the old military filters contain asbestos, so make sure not to use them and to purchase new filters. The mask does protect against contamination.
This mask uses whats called a 40mm gost filter, which is roughly the same as the 40mm stanag filters. There is a slight different in the threading, but the 40mm nato or stanag will fit. This mask is designed to allow someone to escape a contaminated area, not live in or stay for long periods of time.
This is a decent kit, and is very affordable. That's why I include it in the Buggin Out On A Budget Series.

IMPORTANT:
Soviet filters (GOST) fit in NATO masks, but NATO filters DO NOT seal on Soviet masks!
Krok yes, I have found that they can be used but, they have to brute Force somewhat or either sealed with strong adhesive such as tenacious TP. I didn't realize I had cut the part out of the video right after it mentions 40 NATO during editing. But I will add that in as it is important.

The abilities. Of the gp-5 gas mask is the reason I love it so much
Couple things. 1; not meant to be worn for more than 24 hours obviously as there is no drinking tube on the mask.
2: most filters for all mask are 40 mm, any filter should work that is of the same configuration.
3: the Israeli mask now has a drinking tube, however you will need Israeli canteens to drink from.
4: depending on the chemical the mask isn't going to work anyway the chemical will eat it.

Thank you! Yeah the masks with a silicone compound around the seal, will not stand up to most severe chemical agents.
The idea for the mask was something that allows u to run away from the compromised are and actually u can wear a $400-600 gas mask but if there is something really nasty in the area if u are not fully preppered u are fucked up, and even though u are preppered a gas mask is not 100% safe so whatever is in the air will kill u but it will take longer to finish the job but if what u are dealing with is not that nasty well a gp5 is good enough.

I wouldnt worry about asbestos unless you are required to wear a mask 24/7. The filter is designed to filter out chemicals to a molecular level...asbestos is big enough to be caught. The question is the lower layer that has some asbestos impeded into the cardboard wich catches droplets. Unless that comes free for some reason..dont know how but even if,it has to pass through a carbon layer,then another cotton layer. So use at your own caution.
The problem: old filters from the 1970s and 1980s. These filters may be in poor condition and leaking. Modern gost filters do not use asbestos.

The NATO 40 mm cartridge will have to be brute Force and make sure to solidify the seal around the filter with strong adhesive tape.
This mask is actually what is called 40mm GOST. This is similar to 40mm NATO or STANAG. These have a slightly different thread width, but a nato can be used on a gost, although the other way around may be inefficient.
Do not put a nato filter on at all even with tape you will most likely die, save 10$ and get an Israeli mask or if you have 100$ or so get the 3m 6000din series full face respirator ( i own one and i love it) you can either do 40mm nato and the normal 3m bayonet catrages.

@@voltlab2337 yeah but 3m full face respirators aren’t CBRN rated, with the exception of the 3m 7800B I believe. The 3m full face respirators are good for industrial or DIY use (I have the 6800 for airbrushing), but they have their drawbacks with CBRN use due to their filters and material used

This is the one I keep in my nuclear Apocalypse bugout bag incase I need to leave my area mine seems to be lasting a long time and iv had mine on and off still has a perfect seal on it I just be careful how I stretch it when I put it on it would make a perfect mask for a nuclear situation definitely worth the buy and I just buy 40 dollar NBC filters for mine a trick to make it keep its original for form I set mine in warm weather for about 20 minutes thats after I take it off I wear it around the house sometimes to get used to how tight it is mine has held up perfectly

It’s funny because in original GP five is around 20 bucks but i’ve went to a Halloween store and I saw the same mask but it was in like a steam punk style and that shit was 50 bucks 😂😂

three biggest cons for this type of mask from our CBRN class a dozen years ago. 1) overheat quickly due to over the head rubber design, 2) no drinking tube, have to lift up chin or remove mask to hydrate, 3) designed for troops with shaved or very close cropped hair. We went with the MCU2P masks bought at a great price back in 2006 during bird flu scare.
All gas masks get hot. Very few models of civilian gas masks have a drinking tube. Drinking tubes are added to military masks.
A few comments - thanks for the video and feedback. The 40mm thread is designed for GOST filters, not NATO or international norm. Besides of the obsolete filters (and with some abestos), the GOST filters are far more difficult to find. And the NATO filter does not fit perfectly to the mask (tests have been done and reported on YT), which could be life threatening. Good for fun , pics, props, collecting, that's all. There is a new "copy" of the GP5 designed by a Chinese company, fitted with a standard thread, so you can use any modern filter of any brand. Hoses are also with the right norm, as well. So I gues it is a better choice. The + of the GP 5 was the wide range of sizes, from teens to big heads (but smallest sizes are very difficult to get). The Chinese model have as far I know only one size. For a hooded mask, the right size of the hood is a must. Anyways, the + of this design are 1) foldable and easy to carry - 2) the easiest and quickest mask to put on - 3) breathing is rather easy, and the fogging is well prevented..4) rather cheap. All these + mean it could be a good choice for low income areas. Due to the weight of the filter, it is preferable to use it with an attached hose, the filter inside a bag (with little opening at the bottom). As for the time , only modern, very expensive and high technology masks can be worn for an extended time, up to 2 days or more. Hair ? can be used with any hair, as soon as the hair is properly attached - Russian girls are used to put it on. In fact, the seal is not on the hair, but around the face itself, forehead, cheeks, chin. ears.

Also how can you attached the bag to somewhere around your chest area to support weight of hose and filter. Thank you for any assistance.
The Chinese model (which they sell in stores like aliexpress) is bad and leaking. The original gp5 mask is of better manufacture. Better to use modern Chinese hose to attach it to the gp5 mask. The modern Chinese hose has a mixed thread that is compatible with nato and gost.
@@xarv368 yes, as far as the rubber of the GP5 is good, no new production I fear now (?). Reports on the Chinese model are controversial, remember that the same design can be produced by several factories, the worst and the best. The twin cartridges / polyvalent panoramic mask I ordered was of pretty good quality, can depend on the seller, lot of crap on aliexpress, better check before on the main brands alibaba, as instance, and get in touch with the plant team, and after go to the reseller - what I did for the two gas masks I tested last fall. Not tried yet the Chinese copy. Good tests on weaponsandstuff YT channel
Thank you for the great review. Does anyone have any suggestions , when using a gas mask hose to connect the filter, what can you attach to your chest area to hold the filter to support the weight of the filter and not block the air intake portion of the filter?
Yes, you shouldn't ever use NATO filters on a Soviet or Russian mask. Use a GOST filter for a proper seal.

A solution to attach nato filters to the gp5 gas mask is to attach a modern Chinese hose (sale on aliexpress) to it. Modern Chinese hose is compatible with nato and gost filters. The chinese imitation gp5 gas mask (fake tf-1) is of dubious quality, maybe you get a well-made one or maybe you get a real rubbish.

I actually wear a gas mask on a regular basis most people haven't even seen my face but I have long hair so a strap mask is good honestly i hate my face and dress in a post apocalyptic style so I don't wear my gp5 but they are good just watch it if you have long hair
Please answer, I bought this mask and it just arrived after waiting a month but it smells so weird.. is it normal for these masks to smell funky?
The ones I have s=had a funny somell when I first got them. I think because alot of people will put talcum or baby powder on them when they are going to be stored for a long time. I had to thoroughly clean mine with a mild cleaner several times. I was able to get the smell out after 3 or 4 cleanings and letting them air dry in fresh air.

How do you know if your filters are from the Soviet or have been replaced

The modern safe nato ones are made with black color and and Lithuanian looking stripes on it.
