My biggest hurdle was getting up the nerve to ask my academic advisor and three other professors if they would provide me letters of recommendation for the Ph.D. program. I was pleasantly surprised that they were all really nice about it and said right away they would be happy to. The University sent me a "Congratulations, You have been accepted" letter, and I am happy, happy, happy. :)

After reading the handbook, I also recommend asking your department's grad advisor about any elements of the handbook that might not be up to date. For example, with my first comp exam, I followed the handbook and made three paper copies of it and got one signed by my advisor. Went to turn them in. Found out only a digital copy is needed.

I got accepted into a PhD program. However, I've only received the decision letter which I just accepted. Is there supposed to be any form of letter regarding scholarships attached to the decision letter?

How do you get into research labs from another school? I eventually want to get a PhD in psychology but I’m in the MSW program at Columbia this fall. I want to work in a psych lab but it looks like they only want psych students. I’ve looked up all the labs at teachers college for psych and I’m getting discouraged 🥴

Hi there- it's definitely possible to volunteer in labs from other schools at Columbia or other universities either. They definitely do not just want psych students! I also assist in the school of social work. The best way is to email the lab director or coordinator directly with your CV and express your interest!
