Rookie Michael Jordan DESTROYS Larry Bird in CRUNCH TIME - In The Boston Garden

  • The Michael Jordan vs Larry Bird discussion over the years always ignores a few convenient facts. Bird avoided MJ in 88. Had Larry Bird not been injured in 1989, and had Larry Bird not failed to make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs from 1990-1992, Larry Bird would have gotten destroyed in the playoffs by MJ, when MJ finally had an adequate group of teammates. MJ was always the better player, and Larry Bird said that himself. Jordan's "cocaine circus" teammates proved to be too much of an anchor, for even Jordan. But this is where a lot of the negative narratives about Jordan really found their origin... from the media guys who were fans of Magic Johnson & Larry Bird. The belief was that Larry & Magic played the game "unselfishly" and played the game "the right way" and they misinterpreted the competitive force of nature that was Michael's will to win, conveniently, while spinning a negative narrative. Those ridiculous narratives still exist today, as you're reading this.
The game featured in this video is from Michael Jordan's rookie season. In the Bulls first game against Boston that season (November 15, 1984) the Boston Celtics went in to that ballgame with extra motivation because Orlando Woolridge had been talking trash, and all throughout the Chicago & Boston newspapers there were reports of how the Celtics showed up for shoot-around early, and made a point to dominate the Bulls 125-105. The Celtics also went on to win 3 out of the next 4 games against the Bulls and were up 4-1 in the season series. So, give credit where credit is due, the world champion Boston Celtics were the better team. You'll see great ball movement from the Celtics in this basketball game, with world champion talent from the top to bottom of that roster. Of note, Michael Jordan & the Bulls were playing a back to back, and this was their 4th game in 6 days with MJ scoring 37 points in each of the Bulls last 2 games prior to this contest. This was late in the season, and usually rookies struggle late in their first season but MJ was stringing together masterpiece performances despite the tougher more demanding schedule & worse transportation of the 1980's. There was no love lost between these 2 teams, and the rivalry between Michael Jordan & Larry Bird was very real. You'll see Michael Jordan & Larry Bird pick up the intensity in crunch time, and each man attempts to take over the game. This was a thrilling contest, hope you enjoy the edit!

In terms of greatest small forward of all time, I think Bird is actually a more versatile passer than Lebron who likes to massage the ball too long to get his assist. As always Jordan is a totally underrated as a passer. It's amazing how fearless and brilliant he is as a rookie, kind of relentless attacking a very intimidating HOF Boston line up. FUN FACT for the youngsters. There was a Jordan vs Bird video game you can look up. Fun stuff! Thanx for posting!

That was a big win for the Bulls then. Boston did not lose in the Garden back in those days.
Man, Jordan was so freaking athletic, holy moly. He was all over the place. Quick like a cat, and fast like a Ferrari.
And Bird was a basketball genius. McHale was unstoppable in the low post, we all knew it back then. And Parrish was an excellent center. That Boston front line was one of the best of all time.

I mean you are watching a HOF level team, and I think the next year or two is where they're always in the conversation for Greatest of all time teams. Boston in this era does play pure fundamatal basketball, but with next level passing. It is beautiful watch just like the Lakers fastbreak in this ear. Let's not pretend though Golden State or the Tim Duncan Spurs didn't share the ball like this. As for shooting from half court it's because Steph can consistently hit from half court, the problem is other players who can't try to do the same. Lol

Man this Boston Celtics team was loaded with great players. I personally have Larry Bird ahead of Lebron James on the GOAT list. Jordan for me offcourse is up at #1. Michael Jordan could do it all. When asked to rebound he would lead his team in rebounding. It was the same thing in the late 80's when they asked Jordan to play point and to bring the ball up the court to distribute and start the offense. With Jordan it really was whatever he chose to do or was asked to do by the coaches based on what his team needed. This includes 3 pointers. Jordan could shoot them at a high % especially in the playoffs. Look at Bird. He could rebound , assist , score from anywhere on the court. Mid range, 3 pointers , and down in the block with his back towards the basket. He wasn't the greatest athlete as far as running very fast or jumping out the gym but his anticipation, reading the court , and basketball IQ usually had him one step ahead of most players in the league.

That Boston team was just so stacked that it's not even fair. I really hated those guys back then but man they could play. And watching these clips now reminds me of the high bball IQ that used to exist in the NBA.

@@kaspafischer Yeah. It just caught my attention. Because in the future MJ and the Bulls played in the Triangle Offense.
It's kind of like how commentators use to use the word "showtime" when a great play was about to happen. So in college highlights when a commentator said showtime towards one of James Worthy's plays it caught my attention-because he would later be crucial to the Showtime Lakers.
