- The first few events of the legendary Daley Thompson Decathlon by Ocean Software on the ZX Spectrum.
I can't remember how to do the high jump - so if anyone can let me know how to do it then great!
I reviewed this game at zxspectrumgames... if you're interested
Cheers all.
The "Chariots of Fire" theme, at the end, was a nice touch.
Snapped many a joystick playing this!!!
0:18 When I was a kid I used to sing along to this bit:
🎵Daley Thompson, Daley Thompson, Daley Thompson, Daley Thompson...! 🎵
I like how when they got to shot put they thought 'Fuck it'
man, i wanted to hear the finger tapping. heh.
1500m, what a killer that was.
0:42. People who weren’t around when it came out, will never know how mind-blowing those moving ad boards were as the player ran up the field! I think they called it parallax scrolling?? someone correct me
Always used to play this one with the keys, so no problem with busting valuable joysticks here. However, I did break my Interface II Joystick on its 1988 Sequel - Daley Thompson's Olympic Challenge.
that high jump was rooting for him lol, great upload!
Well it was pretty good at the time back in 1984.
Not sure how my right wrist survived the 80s. I am, of course, referring to extreme use of the Kempston joystick! 😂
Kempston was 'the' stick to have 👍😁
Yep - but it also destroyed the 'n' and 'm' keys on my trusty Speccy! :-)
This game destroyed 2 Spectrum keyboards in less than a month... (still great fun though)
+Hypnodelica The 'n' and 'm' keys on my rubber-keyed 48K ended up not working because of this game too!
used to *love* this game but hated that your high scores weren't persisted so had to keep manual records!
this game hurt... u had to push buttons really fast, dont remember if it was "space" key... but u mashed it like crazy, it caused physical pain... we played it so much
It is a wonder I did not snap my Sureshot joystick playing games like this. I got an original Sinclair SJS1 now but probably will not risk this type of game again.
I ruined the 'n' and 'm' keys on my Speccy keyboard playing it 😁
The ultimate keyboard smasher!
How to buggier up your joystick
You took off at the right spot on you 3rd high jump attempt but when you where at the top of your jump you need to keep decreasing the angle to move across and away from the bar.
This game took like 45 minutes to load. When it got to the end of the tape, it would often fail to load correctly and you'd need to adjust a screw about half a micron and try again. I once wasted an entire Saturday just loading this game.
In reality it took around 5 minutes to load.... it felt like an eternity though 😁
The audience on steroids is freakin funky
First time I´ve seen someone run with the shot in a shot put event. No one at Ocean has heard of a throwing circle obviously.
Ha! :-)
The 1500m damm nearly killed me. The amount of joysticks that never made it. Rip guys. 😂
Many trusty sticks ended up in early retirement due to this game
The Kempston killer
this is where my olympics begins and ends.
This game fucked my ZX's keyboard up lol
Same here. 'n' and 'm' ended up knackered
I love that the crowd applause sounds like a machine gun.
i was world record holder with a quickshot 2 joystick lol
Quickshot II was excellent on this game. I usd to hold the base and 'waggle' it without holding the actual stick
If you like blocky graphics and washed-out colours then yeah! Fill yer boots! Great to see the old C64 / ZX Spectrum rivalry alive and well all these years later
;-)
oh bless its sound chip. Its try to copy the tune the C64 version plays.
Commodore 64 all the way
This has to be emulation right??? I would place my wages on it is because at 2:07 you do a rather slow speeded jump with an altitute angle of only 40 (45 being perfect) and only reaching a little across the screen and yet the jump was 9.56 meters!!!???,..C'mon,...I just did 2 high speed jumps at 45 & 46 degrees on this game and reached almost the other side of the screen on both jumps and yet my jumps were 9.32 & 9:16 meters and that is using a real 128k+1 spectrum.
Your judges are obviously on the take! ;-)
+Zeusdaz - The Unemulated Retro Game Channel Yeah I played it on Spectaculator (or was it WSpecEm?) - years ago. But I kept the emu speed at 100% original 48K mode. I do remember playing this back in the day and the first 'round' of events were easy; as you went round and round it became harder to qualify.
My 'n' and 'm' keys and the 'SPACE' key ended up not working on my rubber keyed ZX due to this game.
Yeah lol, I've just done a "let's play" of it (not yet uploaded) and you can clearly hear me whacking away on the keys which sounds quite funny, I tended to select different keys everytime I played it to save wear and tear on the same 2 keys.
I've also done a fresh lngplay of it (upload in a week or so) of all the events showing my best records,...I hit 5m in the pole vault, 9.68 in 100m, 10.02 110m hurdles, 117.79m in Javelin and a whopping 75.90 in the discus which I think is the max that can be achieved in that event,...be sure to check it out in a few days :-D
I think the long jump event does have the distances measured questionably because as I said I've jumped right across the screen think it would be something like 11m but just being over 9m, whereas other jumps have only reached half way across the screen (like yours) and yet hit 9.5m,...very bias.
,AKA......the joystick killer
so many broken joysticks...
Why was he white?
Due to the limitations of the ZX Spectrum colour pallette
great memories, but sad that if this was made today, people would be yelling ''racist'' just because of the colour of the sprite......... That is how pathetic gaming has got.
