This was not a professional gig but I was once a swing for an entire show of 13 roles. Waaaay too much in hindsight, BUT the cast were so helpful and understanding. How everyone treats one another, ESPECIALLY under pressure, makes or breaks a show.
I was being covered once by an actress who had not only never rehearsed the role - she wasn’t even called to a majority of the rehearsals. She was also playing a pretty significant supporting role, and there was no cover or swing or anything for her track in the show, so I have no idea what would have happened if I was sick or injured. VERY stressful indeed!!!
When my colleague was moving into the flat I was moving out of, I got a bit carried away wanting to tell them everything I knew about the flat. It's nice to have the opportunity to let someone into your world and help them at the same time.
I recently saw the Twelve Angry Men tour That has a cast of thirteen (the twelve jurors plus the guard), and one swing/ understudy for all thirteen Every character is onstage the entire time (barring an odd minute here or there) So not only does he know every word of a two hour dialogue, he also knows about twenty four hours worth of blocking (if you combine the twelve jurors’ individual tracks - the guard sits outside the room aside from a few key moments) Struck me as INSANE

that's also incredibly risky -- what if two people get sick at the same time?
