I'm almost 40 and switching careers into UX design. 27 is nowhere near too old. I know it feels that way around that time, given how 30 is right around the corner. But trust me; you guys are still young and vibrant. *I* am still young and vibrant at 38. Go for it.
I need an older UX designer support group! I transitioned from a career in textile design for apparel to UX design last year and there is so much imposter syndrome but it’s mainly around my age! I have so much design experience but it’s a mind trip starting almost over when you’re a senior level in your previous career 😅
Hi! Me too I'm nearly 38 and looking into UX courses I can do part timw, I work in healthcare now in a stressful but well paid job that I loathe. Happy to. Connect for peer learning /support!?
@@Diana-yr8kr I'm 42 looking for a career change into UX so what that makes me.. ANCIENT! lol.. I'm scared and doubt myself everyday. I've studied from time to time but scared to do that extra push you know?
@@wh00is007 yes to choosing what you love and to change! haven't started my understanding learning journey yet, hoping to reduce my work hours so I can study.my job leaves me drained in the evening. what's your industry?
I ended up interning with a UX Design team by pure happenstance (this was through a program that teaches people on IT and initially I was interning in the company’s data centers) I ended up really loving it and stayed on for four months when initially I was only meant to shadow with them for two weeks. I was working on getting my UX certification through Coursera and didn’t really enjoy it because there is no dedicated mentor to go to for projects. However it is great for the fundamentals. After my internship was up, I was pretty much applying everyday for an entry level UX job (very hard to find) and still trying to keep up with UX studies. I was starting to feel a little pessimistic about my prospects of getting a job because I was only working with four months of experience but one day I got an email back from one of the places I applied to. Set up an interview, that I felt I completely bombed and waited for the inevitable rejection. But instead they saw something in me enough to give me a chance and I’ll be starting full time this month! :) Sorry for the long post just thought I’d share my experience as well with you all. Love your videos! I find them super helpful and informative💕
@@hellomeow100 thank you so much! Keep up with applying, I was always on lookout and it really does help to follow a UX Group on LinkenIn, that's how I found most of the entry level job boards. :) Good luck
I'm currently in the process of applying for a bootcamp that I feel grossly unqualified for as someone that hasn't worked in a field related to UX and this video made me feel a lot more okay with not feeling confident! Thank you so much for sharing!
This video hits close to home for me today. I just finished my ux/ui bootcamp, had started applying, and got my first rejection email today. Oh boy is the imposter syndrome hitting hard right now and I’m having all the awful doubts and feelings you just mentioned. Thank you for making this video. Its always comforting to be reminded that others have gone through the same things.
Hi Timothy! Thanks for sharing your experience. We all go through this at some point. I've had many many rejections and it's really just part of the process. The right position will come to you. Good luck!
I’ve been researching a career change from Human Resources into the tech field and UX Design has been something that keeps pulling at me. After binge watching you’re videos it’s all starting to make sense why! I’m so glad you’re sharing your story; you tell it in such a clear and down to earth way that makes it feel realistic and accessible! Your career journey seems similar to mine and it has really helped to find your channel. So, thank you!!! 🙏🏽
I love your videos, they just make me feel like I’m not alone going through this path of becoming a Ux designer , it just makes it a bit less scary 🤍 thank you!! ✨✨
I felt the same way with my most recent career change. I had worked in food service while in college the first time and then in sales and management after I left college. Then I worked in warehouses when I returned to college so I was super nervous going to my environmental chemistry job interviews in my mid 30s. I found a job at the first place I interviewed even though I continued interviewing at several other places before I finished the hiring process. The key was that I was capable of weaving a story with my previous jobs so that it made logical sense and I was able to show what I learned in each roll and how this would make me a better candidate for the available position. I am now changing careers again and once again feel nervous but I am using my past experiences as well as successful experiences of others to fuel my courage and confidence. Thank you very much for sharing your experience! :)
Your videos help me so so much, you have no idea! I'm 19 and also started off with majoring in psychology (which I had wanted to do since I was a kid), but as soon as I got into university, my mind changed and I realized it's not for me. Now I'm planning on going into UX design as well and there are so many questions I have, and your videos really cleared some things up. Thanks a lot!
Because I’m coming from a different career, the fear of inadequacy definitely hits home for me. I’ve already invested so much of my time in education that starting something new is scary and not know if the skills I currently have will really translate over to a UX/UI design career. I also understand that there will be hundreds and thousands of people who will be better than me at this. I won’t be the best and I have to be okay with that. I need to figure out what I can offer and what my strengths are. Thanks for sharing this video Mimi 💕
Hi Jenna! Thanks for sharing this and I really appreciate your insights. I'm a firm believer that whatever career you were in before has skills that will 100% translate over to UX Design and like you said, it's a matter of identifying them and leveraging them! I'm excited to see where this journey will take you into UX!
I just quit my job to become an UX Designer. I know it's very risky but I want to choose something which I won't regret for once in my life. My finance job pays well (where I live) and for my age but I feel like it doesn't suit me. I know UX Designer isn't perfect either but at least I can enjoy it. My fear is still there of failure but I'm gonna try (visiting a university which offers a degree in UX Design). If I fail then so be it, but I will keep trying to find my own path which I can enjoy for the rest of life.
100%, this is the kind of attitude that's going to help you grow. I can't wait for you to start your journey and am so proud that you're taking one step closer to finding fulfillment in your career, I was there too!
Thanks for this, all the concerns and doubts you mentioned is relatable to me very deeply. Gave me a boost of confidence and reassurance that I'm not the only one going through it. Much appreciated.
OMG this video is so much relatable to what i am going through right now...Im 25 working as a QA engineer about to quit my job after months of researching for a career change to UX design.. I am for now self learning as well as looking for bootcamps ......Definitely am doubting myself everyday ...friends are more supportive than parents but I think my parents understand how bad my QA job is .......Im just going to give my all to this journey and lets hope..not hope ...I know im gonna pull through this
I really appreciate hearing this! Personally I'm so excited! I absolutely can't wat to begin the bootcamp I signed up for. I know nothing about UX/UI design but am ready to learn something new. My goal is to have a new career as a UX/UI designer by the beginning of next year, if I'm lucky by the end of this one! I'm still working at my current job, and will be while doing the bootcamp, but I'm ready to devote all of my time for a year if it means a career I'll enjoy more, and be more financially free to explore in later years if I chose I want something different. I'm so excited I start fundamentals next month(I'm actually using the same bootcamp, UX design labs)
A lot of women don’t even start their careers until their kids are in elementary school (like me) I can’t imagine worrying that 27 is too young. 27 is when you should be just getting started
Currently enrolled for the UX bootcamp. And sometimes I had a hard time to understand things, and it stressed me out. Well maybe because I did try to push my insecure out instead of embracing my insecurity, and focusing on how to solve the problem Thank you, your video opened my eyes
I'm making a bold career shift from Human resource to UX Design this year and moreoever learning it my self!😅 Your videos are so encouraging and literally take notes from you 💕 Thank you

Hi Mimi! Really appreciate your honest videos! I’ve been looking at starting the Designlab bootcamp for quite some time, and yes, definitely been questioning about the financial part. I may need to move back home for a bit if I start the bootcamp to save on fixed expenses, but my home is in Asia. Would doing the bootcamp in a foreign country affect the quality of learning? I think in terms of course work it shouldn’t affect too much, but meetings or 1-1 with mentors, I’m wondering if those schedules can be flexible for ppl outside of the US! Thank you for your contents!
