The fact that fan's lists are so different and diverse is a testament to how great Opeth's entire catalog is. Its virtually impossible for me to do a list on this band, however I could easily compare this band to other metal bands!

I think people who love the death metal side of the band will pick My Arms, Your Hearse; people who love the proggy direction they have gone in will pick Sorceress or one of the later albums. There's a definite split between the diehard original fans of Opeth who love the early/mid death metal stuff and hate the prog; and people open to both.

I did posted a ranking a couple weeks ago, and I love all Opeth albums
    but for me it’s
    1. Deliverance
    2. Blackwater Park
    3. Still life
    4. Ghost reveries
    5. Watershed
    6. My arms your hearse
    7. Damnation
    8. Morningrise
    9. Sorceress
    10. Pale communion
    11. Orchid
    12. Heritage
Edit: Writing this like a year after I posted this, and I think still life or Blackwater park is my favorite, and deliverance is 3rd, GR is a very close 4th. Hard to judge as all of their albums kick ass. A lot of the ranking for me has changed for me to be honest.

  • @faultier3215
    @faultier3215 5 лет назад +44

uffff.. its an almost impossible challenge to rank Opeth albums, i love all of them, but i will try my best to give my opinion, as a prog fan and metal fan
    12. Heritage - love some moments in there, but its just a bit to quiet in some ways, the cut with all the stuff before was rough aswell to take as a fan. 8/10 pts. I feel bad for putting this on the last spot though.
    11. Sorceress - I know its a great album, but somehow when i listen to it, i am really missing some old opeth features, not neccesarily the growls, but i think some more heavy chords and real metal riffs could have made it sooo much better. 8/10 points
    10. Morningrise - Not so sure about it, except "To bid you farewell", most tracks sound similar to me, Balck metal part after acoustic guitar after black metal part...
"To bid you farewell" on the other hand is the very first, but maybe the most beautiful opeth ballad to me. It has a crazy atmosphere and makes you fell a very unique way when you listen to it. This track alone should probably set the record to a higher ranking for me, but i just didnt want give a single track such a high influence on the ranking 8.5/10 (7.5 without to bid you farewell)
    9. Orchid - Similar to Morningrise, but it has some really psychedelic vibes in some tracks, that are absolutely unique and i never heard combined with black metal like this on any other album (check "under the weeping moon") 8/10
    8. Pale Communion - Magnificient Opeth record in their post - deathmetal era, best one so far. Love "Eternal rains will come", "moon above, sun below" and "river". Somehow, i really dislike "Cusp of eterenity", my least favourite Opeth track, idk what was going on with them with that "aahhhaah"- Chorus. Still, i dont want to give single tracks to much weight in this list. 8.5/10
This is were it starts getting tough, i am totally fanboing for everything from Opeth between "My arms your hearse" and "Watershed"....
    7. Still Live - I know this is a top 3 opeth record for many fans, it has great, long, complex, proggy, heavy and heartwarming Songs, every single one on it actually.
Still, in my opinion its missing a tiny bit of atmosphere compared to some albums, and some wildness compared to some of the others that i have ranked higher 9/10 points
    6. Damnation - its just so hard to compare damnation with the other records, its defenetly a masterpiece, and if you say you didnt get that much into the second half of the record, you probably just didnt listen enough, i find the second half even better than the first, personally. "To rid the disease" and"closure" are absolutely outstanding tracks 9.5/10 points
from here on, since 10 years i struggle to decide which i like most, every single one of those have been my number 1 record for a while, and it might change every day....
    5. Watershed - This one i cant decide with place 4, you might just switch them up in the ranking if you want. what can i say? absolute prog metal masterpiece, crazy stuff in here. Listening the album as a whole is a 10, if you rank track by track its maybe a tiny bit weaker than the top 3 in this list. 9.5/10
    4. My arms your hearse - Dude, next to Demon of the Fall you listed the Outro and Madrigal, a short instrumental, what the heck? This album ist just raw, its pure, there is no other opeth album that has this kind of energy. In my opinion, this record was the biggest step in the evolution of opeth, its just SO much more complex, prog stuff going on than in their previous record morningrise. Also Mikaels disorted Vocals switching from Black Metal screaming in morningrise to death Metal growling on this one is a great step. besides the legendary Demon of the fall, every single real(!) track on this album is a killer that comes really, really close to it. Only missing a nice ballad eventually. 9.5/10 points
    3. Deliverance - "Deliverance", "A fair judgement" and "Master apprentices" are all like 11/10 tracks. Brutality, great riifs, gigantic tranistions, incredible Beauty especially on Fair Judgement and the filling instrumental "for absent friends". Just the first and the last track on the record i consider a tiny bit more generic, but still 9/10 tracks, so the whole record gets its 10/10
    2. Ghost Reveries - In its sound a bit similar to watershed, like you said, a great comination of Deliverance and damnation. sick prog metal masterpieces with crazy transitions, no words needed, 10/10
    1. Balckwater Park, what else could be here? The title track is not only a Prog Classic if you consider the instrumental work, its also simply the heaviest Death metal track ever written. Its sounds like the end of the freakin world. What else to say about it? Oh wait there are seven 10/10 tracks leading up to this song i was just talking about. 10/10 points

I just discovered these guys after going down the prog rabbit hole. So far the newer retro prog stuff is way more accessible, but some of the death metal stuff is growing on me too. Growls and screams to me are way more impactful when there is a balance between the clean and harsh vocals. Anyway, Sorceress was the first song i heard and fell in love with.

7- Damnation: Although it was supposed to be the 2nd part of a double album, Damnation came to be a groundbreaking and daring album for the band on its own. It features some gorgeous moments my favorites being Death Whispered A Lullaby and Closure. Still it varies too little regarding the soundscapes it offers, sounding a bit monotone to listen to in one take.(7/10)
6- Sorceress: the third record regarding the band's so called 70's prog era ironically kicks in with an heavy chugging metal clad beauty in the form of the title track and we're tricked to believe that Opeth is going for a different approach this time. But, after the Barret's era Floydesque The Wilde Flowers we're quickly disenchanted of that possibility and we're left with the same formula Pale Communion tried to borrow from Heritage. Although being a bit boring , Sorceress is really well preformed (as always) and there's still room for a great 70's metal track in Chrysalis and a prog rock extravaganza in Strange Brew. (7/10)
5- Morningrise: After an interesting debut Opeth's sophomore came out to be something I really wasn't expecting. Granting its heaviness with a bulk of blackened melodic death metal, the guys gave this great record an uncanny ambiance of beauty and majesty by injecting tons of folk elements in their pompous compositions. And what to say about the masterpiece that is Black Rose Immortal? (7.5/10)
4- Blackwater Park: Well... not much else to say about this one is it? Cuts like Bleak, The Drapery Falls, Dirge For November or The Funeral Portrait are simply the stuff every prog metal fan dreams are made of. Absolute classic. (8.5/10)
3- In Cauda Venenum: After two albums replicating what was achieved in Heritage (with some amazing cuts here and there but lacking the spontaneous wit of the said album) Mikael went for something somehow more venturous. Make no mistakes, though: the main dish served here is still retro prog rock with sparks of metal (although a couple of new tricks were revealed like the djenty Charlatan or something that seems to be out of Mr. Devin Townsend's imaginary in Guilt). What's new is the most edgy, daring and refreshing approach to it, making it rise above its previous pears. A long waited return to form. (8.5/10)
2- Heritage: When this record came out my first reaction wasn't shock but instead awe. In themes like Nepenthe, The Lines In My Hand or I Feel The Dark Mikael achieved to recapture that retro prog jam vibe in such an accurate way it seems the band is playing cover versions of an early 70's prog record. On the other hand The Devil's Orchard, Slither and Folklore are hybrid each one featuring various influences (from 70's metal to psychedelia , from Folk to Prog Rock...) being mixed and played at masterful level. Of course people payed too much attention to the stylistic changes namely regarding heaviness and singing style but it's their loss. While dwelling with redundant stuff they missed an absolutely amazing record. (8.5/10)
1- Still Life: Forgive me everyone but IMO Still Life is without shadow of doubt Opeth's finest hour by far. This monument based in an tragic concept was served with a coat of absolutely off the charts prog death metal riffage (especially Godhead Lament and Serenity Painted Death) smartly interluded by state of the art acoustic tunes (Face of Melissa and Benighted are simply put their 2 best compositions regarding this category). IMO their peak and a defining record within the genre (9.5/10)
As for the remainder of Opeth's catalogue I find it hard to listen so it's difficult for me to rate it. I don't want to give them a crap note because none of them is bad per se (far from it!). And the reasons form my somewhat indifference before those albums vary: Orchid still presented them in a bit of an embryonic stage and I find My Arms Your Hearse being too dense acoustically for me to enjoy it. On the other hand I think albums like Pale Communion or even fan favorites Deliverance, Ghost Reveries, and Watershed found the band over-dwelling and over-exploring paths they threaded way better before (with the only exception being the excellent Hex Omega and Atonement). The excellent elements of Opeth's best tunes are there, but they seem to be somehow recycled and lacking freshness. However I really enjoy tons some tracks some being Demon Of The Fall, A Fair Judgement, Master's Apprentice, Eternal Rains Will Come or the aforementioned Hex Omega and Atonement.

Nice job and yes it's tough to rate Opeth records. Saw them for the first time opening for Nevermore at the Hard Rock in Chicago in 2001. That was their 'Black Waterpark" tour and "Dead Heart" for Nevermore. One of the best shows ever... Saw Opeth pretty much on every tour after that, they' re one of the best band live.

Just got Sorceress in the mail (on vinyl). sides 1 & 2 are perfection. 3 & 4 classic prog. I think the album excels in the quieter moments. I'm new to Opeth so I don't suffer the trauma of their transition away from their metal roots. It's all new and wonderful to me. In Cauda Venenum is definitely better in Swedish and Sorceress is definitely up there for me. A completely different listening experience than Ghost Reveries or Still life, but one I will be returning to a lot. Prog? Sure, why not? So beautiful? without a doubt.

    01. My Arms, Your Hearse
    02. Ghost Reveries
    03. Damnation
    04. Still Life
    05. Blackwater Park
    06. Deliverance
    07. Morningrise
    08. Orchid
    09. Watershed
I've liked every release, but Watershed did nothing for me. I tried multiple times to like the songs, but it just felt boring to listen to for some reason.
I don't even know where to put the new sound albums
    Heritage
    Pale Communion
    Sorceress
    In Cauda Venenom
Heritage is the one that I listened to the most out the new sound albums because I tried so hard to get into the new sound. I kept telling myself: It's gotta click, but it just never did. I listened to Pale Communion twice, then dropped it. I listened to Sorceress multiple times, but dropped it as well. I did like the title track and Will o the Wisp, though. I just listened to In Caudia Venenom, but ended up just liking Heart in Hand and All Things will Pass.

You can't do a "worst to best" with Opeth because they're all good. You have to do a " the album I like the least to the album I like the most".

Hi Pete. I am a norwegian guy who have been following your vlogs for a while and we pretty much have had the same taste for music up through the years. (I an 67 years old by the way.) I just wonder if you ever have listened to a norwegian band called Circus Maximus..? I think they are pretty amazing although they haven't released too many albums until now. I recommend listening to their album "Nine" as a good intro to their music. ;-) Please send me a comment on your reaction to this album. Best regards from Arnfinn Lauritzen - Norway

I feel like with most bands there is more of a general consensus as to the peak of their careers by their fans. Opeth seem to defy this because we all have such dramatically different favorites. Their catalog is so storied and diverse, my personal top ten can vary day to day or listen to listen. Such an amazing band, I pretty much listen to them every day and have for the last 2 decades.

I've nothing against their later outputs, in fact I'm very happy that the band is doing what they feel inclined to do so at this point in their career. I just gravitate to albums that have extreme metal influences, anyway here are my favourites:

I love in cauda venenum and sorceress, i feel like Mikael has become a much better songwriter and arranger over the years-songs build and make sense rather than feel like a hodge podge of different riffs and quiet parts. I love the early albums too, and there are tons of cool ideas and riffs on albums like still life and bwp, but the vocal melodies, songs and arrangements weren't there yet.

It took me a long long time to like Watershed as a complete album. I loved Burden (the solos on that are my favorite of any ever!) but I really had to give it time. Heir Apparent is amazing also. And I've grown to see the strengths of the others too since. Currently I'm struggling to like any of the albums since then. I like songs here and there but It's really not for me I guess.
