If you use an ABY box to drive two amps at the same time make sure that one of its inputs is transformer isolated in order to eliminate ground loops. These boxes are not cheap however.
Back in the day I ran stereo live (really just for me usually - as the mic'd amps were set up to work mostly as my guitar monitors and we seldom if ever used stereo PA)
My stereo rig in the late 70s was a Les Paul standard wired stereo into 2 50 watt plexis with 4X12 cabinets, monster! Currently playing mono but looking to go wet-dry- wet
So awesome! This is what I want to do! Stereo guitar set up would be sweet! I can do that as long as the 2 guitar heads dont have to be identical ones! I already have a few different brands of guitar heads. Just need the pedal! Love the stereo sound much better than mono!
Yes. If you have multiple heads you can do this. Just balance the volume of each side so they are balanced and you’ll get some great results. Good luck!
Ya know, you don’t need an effects loop if you have.a stereo pedal ( like a boss DD 7 or stereo reverb ) at the end of your chain. You just plug left to one amp and right to the other from that stereo pedal and you’ve got stereo. The other mono pedals are split into stereo by the end pedal automatically . So, as long as you use overdrive from your pedals and not from your amp, the ambient effects will still sound good as long as they are before the ambient effects.
@@LonelyRocker Yes, If I owed 2 beautiful Marshall amps like you have, it would be almost criminal not to use the amps gain. I’m using 2 VOX MP 50 amps, no send/ return. The easiest stereo rig is a stereo chorus Guitar-chorus = dry chorus output into the front of one amp and the effected chorus output into the other amp, probably technically not true stereo but it’s a cheap way to play through two amps at once for anyone wanting to try it. It’s glorious by the way even a cheap chorus as long as it’s got two outputs. Anyway that’s how this that was my cheap wet/dry setup basically the chorus pedal replaced the aby pedal in your third diagram. You can’t turn amps off using a chorus this way but you can put a tuner in between the chorus and an amp to mute your secondary amp. By the way never ever run two amp unless you want to run two amps for the rest of your life. After playing through two one is never enough anymore lol. Most neighbors really love dual amp setups also 😂
Another option. But not all chorus pedals can send a dry signal and a wet signal. But you could send both sides of the stereo outs. Using the effects loops if you have them is the best way if you have the gear to pull it off. I think the tone is way better. But I agree playing through two amps will ruin you forever 😎🤘🏽🎸
Question..I have a Digitech RP 10 effects pedal board..can i use this in a stereo set up..maybe put a splitter before connecting to the amps..?//don't want to have to buy individual effects pedals
It is a stereo pedal...you should be able to so the single pedal setup. Just turn off effects that might ruin the stereo effect...this is a very old pedal so I can't say for sure...just try it...
@@LonelyRocker Stero Chorus is awesome and obviously the ping pong delay. I have to admid I didn't use it for long long time was I have a family now and I mostly play acoustic guitar or piano or violin. But it has an awesome sound.
@@LonelyRocker I was playing in a band in my 20s and places one amp left and one amp right to the stage. Then no PA was needed :-) The Fender Ultra Chorus has 2x 65 W solid state amps. The stereo effect loop lit my fantasy in the 90th to buy a second one and build a stereo rig. It was really awesome. BUT the celestion speaker are really really directional. This means to the the full sound you need to be >3-4 m away. I guess I would need a wireless Guitar setup to really enjoy it. Combined output power is then 2x 130 Watt = 260 Watt in full Stereo. I use the preamp from one and the power amp from both. The amp itself is a stereo amp with a stereo chorus. It sounded awesome but the stereo effect with a single amp is quite small as the speaker are so close. I always layed down on the floor between the speaker and played. Then I throught just buy a identical second one, craft the cables for the effect loop and use two! In beginning i had problem with 50 Hz hum because of ground loop. I had to power both amps from a single power source, then it worked. Now I was told everbody directy feeds into a PA and does not use amps anyway, but it would break my heart to sell them. I wish one time I can set then up again and play them as they are supposed to be really loud. Their clean sound is awesome. Preampt distorted sound is also nice and you will never be able to get power amp distortion with them as they are simply too loud before they start to distort. I had it once pretty maxed out in a bunker.
It depends. Technically yes but I don'y like stereo effects going into the front of the map. Just my preference. But if the effect is bypassed and you are using the pedal as a splitter that can work providing you are getting two even signals out of the pedal.
How can i set the volume of the second amp (right channel in return loop)? Bypassing the preamp of the second amp how can i set volume if i don’t have master volume on that amp?
Hey there, do you recommend a distance between cabinets? Is directly side by side going to be ok, and then adjust the stereo width through the pedals, or should there be a minimum distance between them. 👊
Definitely the wider you can set up the cabs the wider the stereo effect will feel. Use your ears until it sounds great. Ideally I wouldn't put them side by side.
I tried this using a 2 amps 1(gallien Krueger amp s 1 /ml 250 lunch box and a sel 2100 amp head! May delay was a alesis quadrasynth a nd for the reverb a Alesis midi verb 3! Why won’t his settup work your stereo way🥸! The 2nd amps input you have no signal! 4:23
So hard for me to diagnose from here. Best advice. Set it up as simply as possible then add pedals one by one until you identify the source of the problem. Good luck!
Thanks! You could take the stereo outputs of the pedal and just go into the input of each amp. While the stereo pedal may not be in the optimal place in the signal chain you will still get a stereo result. Hope that helps!
I'm in a band where I have recently become the only guitar (and vocals) and I'm finding my live sound for garage rock is a bit empty. I use a whammy pedal and then a zoom G7.1ut Multifx pedal with 3 options (adjusted on the 2 way foot switch): distorted (pedal back), Distorted plus chorus (pedal forwards), Wah with a hint of Chorus (pedal pushed on controls both). Currently the Zoom sends the signal gain free and uses the Head's preamp to dirty the sound. I also have an eharmonix channel splitting pedal so I am wondering if there is a way I could fill my sound by having one signal going to a DI and the sound desk either being delayed (but how) or splitting the signal after the heads FX send to do similar so I dont have to take 2 rigs to shows where you might only have 10 minutes changeover and other bands may roll their eyes if you are trying to set up 2 rigs.. The issue is that doing the latter and running my multifx through the effects loop means that whammy and wah/chorus would be afterthe driven signal...Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance and thanks for such a clearly explained video !
I’ve read this comment a few times! That’s a huge question that I will have trouble answering in the comments. The best advice I can give you is not to over complicate your setup. Maybe the solution is simpler than you think. Good luck! And thanks for checking out my video!
Oooooh. That’s an interesting concept. I love me some TONEX. The only problem is the TONEX pedal doesn’t have an FX loop. But you could pull of an interest stereo rig with some creative cabling. Would definitely be a fun experiment if you had access to two pedals. Let me know if you try it.
If you want the delay to maintain true stereo then yes you need to connect both outputs. The Reverb simulates stereo but it won't be the same effect as preserving the true stereo of the delay.
My pleasure. This depends on what you have. I tried splitting a stereo pedal between 2 amps and the reverb pedals just didn’t work properly this way. Something to do with how the reverb is generated. If you had a pedal or rack that allowed you to split it between the 2 rigs that would be one way or you’d need pedals for each side. I haven’t tested this way yet so these are just ideas.
Most likely a ground loop between your amps. You probably have to lift ground in one of the amps. Some a/b boxes do that for you but if you Google it you may find another safe solution.
