  • Welcome Back!
    Wow a video within 2 weeks of each other. Looks like I'm motivated.
    This video is 5 tips on working on Timex's Electric Calibers.
    It's specifically applied to Timex Electrics (M40/M41/M42), Timex Q Quartz (M62/M63), Dynabeat (M253/M254/M255/M256/M260/M261/M262).
    I break them down to the following
    -Stem removal
    -Movement removal (Almost all of the watches are electric, although a few can be removed from the case back, no tips required for those)
    -The shunt bridge removal (an annoying part on these watches)
    -A Balance swap
    -Part interchangeability between models
    Amazingly this is a pretty long video, at any rate I'm getting use to shooting with the overhead set up a bit.

    I replaced a battery on one of these recently and it was fun figuring out that it needed a kick to get going. I had never encountered a movement like that and I got great satisfaction out of getting it working. Watches are so fun. .

    Very informative video, thanks. There's not a lot out there on servicing Timex movements, especially the electronic/electric ones. I have an original "Time Machine" Q, that I believe has the M62 movement (It has the crystal and gold multi-legged component.). In order to get to remove the stem you have to remove the circuit first. The balance bridge screw looks like it might hold the circuit, but it does not. The circuit lifts over the screw, which makes sense. There are two screws near a gold, what looks to be, integrated circuit or perhaps a transistor? Your video helped me avoid utter disaster as I work to get this thing running. At first I thought I might have hurt the movement because I may have put a drop of very light watch oil on the top of what I now know is the balance jewel. From the looks of it, no oil would have gotten down to the pivot. But, if it did, how would you go about cleaning the pivots without removing the balance from the bridge. I don't want to deal with the hairspring pin that is holding the HS to the bridge if I don't have to. Thanks again. Cheers.

    Now I have the knowledge I was missing ! Thanks Chris . Great video and very helpful. Now lets see if I can put the knowledge towards getting a couple of dynobeats running.

    Thanks Chris. I always find your content interesting and informative. I've tinkering with DynaBeats, Electric and Electronic 's with moderate success. Oddly enough, it seems that the Electric's have been the most successful. I've also had reasonable success flipping these watches online for a small profit. However, I'm still learning the movements and can spend too much time on one watch. Any information you can share about parts resources or reasonable service providers would be appreciated. Please, keep up the great content. Cheers!

      For parts I usually end up turning to eBay for watch lots. I've had pretty good luck buying watch lots that have Timex's in them.
      Although I would also look out at local flea markets I have gotten a lot of them for 1-10 dollars at events like that.
      As for service it's usually a dead end, I have heard more than a few watch makers turn them down. That's part of why I just do them on my own.

    I know you just put the same balance back in for demonstration, but while replacing the balance you get an opportunity to clean/oil the pivots on the gear train and balance jewels.

    Very informative video! Question, I saw you struggled to remove the crystal using the aluminum crystal lift. Was the crystal glued or was the seal adhered because of age? Did you ever get it to release?

    • @christicks5843
      @christicks5843  10 месяцев назад +1

      Good day,
      They usually aren't glued or sealed unless a previous watch maker couldn't find a suitable replacement. I will admit using the cheap lifts I usually have to put on gloves and give it a very hard twist. The lip on the crystals are actually fairly chunky so they tend to need a lot of compression to get them out. I got the crystal off on a different one haha but on that one I kind of just ended up moving on and leaving it. One day maybe I'll revisit it if I buy a nicer lift.

    Do you happen to have any of the Timex Q Quartz watches with the M42 movement in your collection? I have one it's a 1980 and it's working great and is excellent shape. When I first received it I thought it was non working because it didn't start ticking so I set it aside and decided to do some research and found it advance every minute and it doesn't have a second hand. I decided to set the time and let it sit and low and behold it was keeping perfect time.

      Thanks! I normally would just look up lots on eBay. While not a guarantee I find it a cheap way to get lots of Timex spares, otherwise local flea markets for me have usually turned up Timex watches that can be used for donor parts.

      @christicks5843 I ended up finding a nice electric a few weeks ago. Put a battery in and it ran great for an hour and then just stopped. Is it caput or any chance I can get it running again?

    • @christicks5843
      @christicks5843  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@HarperPath Hmm I would imagine that if it ran pretty ok to start nothing would change in that time to really break anything. I do however think the watch probably need a service. I would guess there is some rancid oil gunking things up a bit!

    • @HarperPath

      @@christicks5843 Appreciate the feedback. Definitely wasn't expecting it to stop. Usually it's the opposite where they won't start up straight away but eventually do. This the the first time I've had it run right off the bat and then stop on me like this.

    OK in hindsight, there is a problem. When I took the stem out, another piece came out with it. This piece is not shown in your movement??? Do the Dynabeat watches indicate this on the watch somewhere? (I love your thoroughness!)

    • @christicks5843
      @christicks5843  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks, Hmm is the part round? It might be a part for the quickset date. If so you should be able to put it in the slot and when you reattach the stem it should click in. Alternately if could be a flat spring. I'm not at my home and the moment but when I get back I'll see if I can find a electric with the parts to get a photo and post on the community page.

    • @christicks5843
      @christicks5843  Год назад

      Hmm if I had to take a guess I would assume something gumming up the seconds wheel (maybe rancid oil) or something to that effect. I would bet a service would probably clear up the issue!

      @christicks5843  8 месяцев назад +1

      Good day, yes if your dynabeat is a bit slow you can move the small brass arm connected to the balance counter clockwise a bit. Be very careful to not hit the hairspring itself but that should allow you to correct that.

    • @christicks5843

      There is a spring that controls the hacking on these movements that couples with the crown it maybe bent preventing it from moving into place properly.

    • @christicks5843
      @christicks5843  Год назад

      You can try the regulating lever first. It is the golden lever on the hairspring. Move it a bit clockwise making sure to not directly touch the hairspring as it may deform it. However 15 minutes is a lot there maybe something else wrong with it. It may need additional service.

    Hey chris, does the gold fork under the balance wheel have to be in a certain position before you install the balance wheel? I just but a model 52, new battery, nothing working. checked continuity on contactor and its good... any ideas?

    • @christicks5843
      @christicks5843  Год назад

      Good Day, Hmm usually it doesn't matter that much on these movements as the fork doesn't have much wiggle room for the roller to slide on either side of it, so when the balance drops in it typically will just fall in the correct position. Does the balance itself spin freely with little wobble (with no battery inserted). Generally a light flick should be followed by a few ticks (good swings of the balance), if the balance looks very wobbley or does not move more than one swing up and down it might be an issue with the pivots or pivot holes, I'd check to see if there is any old gunky oil or possibly the pivot is in bad shape (corrosion or excessive wear). Additionally if you have a battery in with the back off even if the pivots are wonky you will typically atleast see the balance kind of jump or stick to a position indicating atleast electrical parts are seemingly ok but a mechanical issue is present. If no balance movement is noted at all with the battery in but mechanically it looks good and you confirmed the contactor the enamel wire on the balance or coil maybe damaged. Have a look to see if you can spot any obvious gashes in the coil or anything corroded on the balance side of the contactor.
      I hope this helps!

    • @tjhodge28
      @tjhodge28 Год назад

      Thank you!!! It moves well mechincally but still nothing with battery added... should i buy a new balance wheel? or a new contactor? im new to vintage watches and have no idea where to buy parts.

    • @christicks5843
      @christicks5843  Год назад +1

      @@tjhodge28 No problem! My best guess than would be that the balance has a damaged coil (I'd still confirm and specifically inspect the coil, additionally if you remove the balance you can also check the tip of the contactor and just make sure it's clean or atleast not dark from soot build up or obscured). Unfortunately it's kind of hard to buy parts for these. I usually end up buying entire spare watches and will pull parts as needed.
