I think understanding some of her personal life is really important for feeling all the depth that these songs have in them. some of her struggles are horrible, and the way she pours that fully into her songs gives her music a powerful healing spirit for me that nothing else quite has. alright, very shortly after ‘my mind’ came out, yebba’s mother committed suicide. she was 21 then, and in the five years since, most of the original music she’s released has had a lot to do with grief. Even in these songs, it’s wrapped in every one - in ‘stand’: ‘when you went away / my universe divided’, etc. the song is sort of an encouragement/challenge to herself to stand up in the face of struggle and know that she can make it through ‘all i ever wanted’ is even more interesting ... i’m honestly getting sleepy though so maybe i’ll just stop there lol parting words are, watch evergreen (the apple music video) next. that’s the first song she wrote after her mom’s passing, and it’s beautifully dedicated to her. also, yebba is christian and the daughter of a preacher - (and had a complicated relationship to faith, for good reasons) - and this take of evergreen was the first time she went inside a church since her mom passed. it’s beautiful and moving and even joyous in a way? incredible song lookin forward to whatever you do next!
Yebba is a gift. An incredible vocalist and storyteller with her lyrics. I don’t know how much you know about her but her mother committed suicide just after her performance of My Mind and Evergreen is about her, as is a good portion of this album .
