    i just started getting interested in photography and I really like your videos cause you are very clear and instead of showing off you really tell how to do things. thanks :)

    I love me some macro! I got the Canon 100mm 2.8 L, I'm always stunned by how sharp the thing is even wide open. I may experiment with a bellows contraption for even closer results. I love these kind of videos by the way, it's great seeing someone who's been in the industry for so long show us all of the little tips and tricks (many of them really simple and cheap!) rather than just go on about getting expensive lens X or expensive accessory Y.

    You always do great videos !! Right to the point. Thanks for share your knowledge. I have the E mp65mm. And let me tell you that isn't to easy to use. You need a remote shutter, rail, tripod, flash light. And a lot of time. Since the lens is manual. And doesn't have image stabilization. But its awesome!!!

      To be honest I found it not that good quality At 1:3 it's fine but closer that that it needs a lot of help with sharpening. Thanks for the compliment on the videos.

    I'd like to add one more Macro option which you haven't mentioned but which is great for starting out as.
    For this, you need a tele-lens and a wide-angle lens plus a very cheap ring. The ring has got filter threads on both sides, which enables you to mount the wide-angle lens to the tele-lens which is then mounted on the camera. The difference to the first method you mentioned is, that you can get even closer.
    Nice vid. Looking forward to watching part 2.

      +rontz Your quite right I'd forgotten the you can do that, I'll make a note on the vid in the morning, Thanks very much for the remark.

    I can't believe Canon would not lend you the lens. I would think you are one of the most knowledgeable and experienced photographers on RUclips and I cannot understand why they would refuse. It would be good publicity for them as well. I am sorry to hear that, but really their loss. All the best.

    in Australia, we have the Canon Collective. Canon bods organise events where people like you and me get to try out expensive toys such as 5DsR cameras, 11-24 , 500 etc lenses. And the MP-E 65. To be sure, we don't get to take them home, but you could certainly use one to make your video.

    Hello ! I love your tutorials and I have been teaching myself photography for about 4 years now and I have really developed an interest in macro. I have limited funds so until I pick up a dedicated macro lens, I have been using a reversal ring and extention tubes. I tend to lean towards the ring ...really I guess for no particular reason! 😊 I am used to it. My problem is when I use my 50mm with the ring ,I have a Canon T3i, I use what I think is plenty of light but it seems like no matter what I shoot ,the photo is always out of focus except for the smallest sliver . I take the time to move the camera back and forth on a small tripod until the subject is in focus or as in focus as it can be then I click. How was your photo so clear and sharp? Any suggestions? Or is this normal? Thank you ,sir.

      Short depth of field is always a problem with macro, so a small aperture is needed f16 is really the minimum you need. It also depends on the size and the magnification. I have a lens that on an insect gives me about 1 mm of depth of field. One answer is focus stacking.I've a tutorial called "focus stacking very easy' that may help you.

      Phillip McCordall I have seen it! 😊 I understand about the aperture and Dof but...with a reversal ring, unless you she'll out the bucks,you have no control over that. So, that's why I wondered how your photo was so clear and sharp because you did exactly what I do! Put the ring on and use a 50mm then shoot the shot! But,we got totally different results. So,Mr. Mortally, if you did something different, please include it in your tutorials because I really enjoy them and since I am self taught, I have to really struggle. However, I haven't done bad for myself, as I think my photo's are quite good for an amateur. Although, I am never satisfied with anything! 😊 Have a great day! Mr. McCordall not Mr. Mortally!!!

      With a reversal ring you have no control over the f stopunless you set the aperture with the lens the right way around, then remove the lens while holding down the aperture preview button, normally placed under the lens release button, it's small so you might miss it. Then when you refit the lens the wrong way around it will be stopped down. Maybe that is your problem. Sorry if I didn't mention it. I remember explaing it in one of my macro videos though.

      @buddah610 7 лет назад +1

      Thank you! I did know about that but maybe I am just not setting it at the right F stop. I will try a few things. Thank you so much for taking time to help! By the way,my auto correct changed your name! Lol! I just re-read my last question and felt embarrassed but I am sure you have had auto correct change some words! 😊I apologize!

      You should look at old vintage lenses! At first the manual focus is a little getting used to but with the focus assist it is actually really easy. Sometimes gets me better results than my modern lenses!

    Ref my earlier comment I quote > When you don't "already" know what may be best?, "should you buy an old 35mm or 50mm or longer?"., (depending on sensor size) none of these vids are really very helpful? please comment :) = (The following reply has been received) > I's virtually impossible to say what is best, as it depends on budget and also wether you are doing real macro or micro. A real tutorial can only show what is possible considering the equipment varies between £20 and thousands of pounds.(My further comment = > ) Thank you, That said a few clues would be very helpful. Perhaps the stuff of a "Next-Video". Thank you for your reply... :)....... I happen to have a ute-load of Auto lenses - I will try a few on manual to see what I get, I have a suspicion that on an APS-C sensor an old manual lens of 35mm might offer a wide enough/starting view??? - In all things best ishes to all parties....
