The Big heist(Lufthansa) was the biggest cash robbery on American soil at the time. In 1978, $5 million in cash and $875,000 in jewelry were stolen from Lufthansa at JFK airport. This heist is known for having the largest successful cash robbery at an airport, as well as being one of a few high profile non- Mafia large scale heists considered to have been planned by Jimmy Burke, a Lucchese crime family associate. Although Jimmy Burke was not convicted because no solid evidence could tie him directly to the event, his involvement with this robbery is widely considered fact.

"This was such a game changer in security. They made sure nothing like this would ever happen again."
Sometimes you just have to wonder why do things have to go wrong before they fix it?
If i where to hazard a guess as to why, it would be until it happens, its just a potential and it hasn´t happened to you.
So no reason to worry about it, you can get tons and tons of warnings and near misses, but until the event actually happen it will get treated as if it hasn´t happened.
And if it hasn´t happened yet, there is no reason to worry about it or do anything about it.

Nicholas Pileggi's 1985 book "Wiseguy" is the source material for the movie. The heist was conceived b/c - as Michael states - an airport employee was in debt to a bookmaker. As Pileggi wrote, the actual heist went almost perfectly. The problems began because the heist was SO perfect, law enforcement IMMEDIATELY understood it was an "inside" job. It didn't help that lots of hangers-on started bragging to their wives (or mistresses) that they were owed a chunk of the score.

There’s a great TED talk by Frank Abagnale Jr. (“Catch Me if You Can”) about his life. Well worth watching. Hey Micheal, thank you for the video, I was wondering if you could do one on who may have been the most powerful mob associates that could not be made, like jimmy coonan, or jimmy burke, or Joe watts

There are actually (at least) 3 movies about "The Big Heist": "The Big Heist" in 2001, "The Ten Million Dollar Getaway" in 1991, & of course "Goodfellas" in 1990

Interesting! I knew about the airport heist and marveled at how on earth it was pulled off. Michael, like you, I am a believer in our Lord Christ. Something I figured out at about the age of 40 is that it was a lot easier to make a plan if it was for a sinful purpose (like stealing, killing etc.) I could easily come up with ideas for a scheme, but and it was much harder to do the right things! I believe old satan sows seeds (thoughts, ideas, opportunities) for bad purposes because he LOVES to see us serve him. So he makes it easy for us to wrong which we do if we are doing anything that doesn't honor God. But to offset the difficulty of being good , we are blessed with His grace when we honor him with our actions. Love you guy... thanks for your caring and sharing!

Michael- congrats on the success of your channel! A topic that I would love to hear your take on involves the current state of sports gambling and how the legalization in many states is impacting the traditional mafia run sports books, low level bookies, and the loan sharking business. When online betting was in its infancy and up until the last few years as Fan Duel, Draft Kings, and some other online behemoths have partnered with casinos, it was a pain in the but to get paid from bovada, betus, etc…so it was still worth having a bookie. I don’t see that being the case now unless you live in a state where it is still illegal. Would love to hear your thoughts. God Bless!

I was into petty crime when I was young. When you live like that your brain becomes attuned to scams. Everywhere you go you see an opportunity to steal something, it's like you have an ESP for crime. Junkies have the same mindset. I haven't stolen anything in decades but I still see opportunities for theft everywhere I go. I often think that if I wrote a book about the stuff I did, people would think it was fiction. Me and my friends all left school at 16 yet, in some respects, we were so much smarter than our schoolmates who went on to university.

Henry hill came to my church in Palmdale, CA and raised his hand to give his life to Christ. I used to go to lunch with him and he invited my family to a bbq at his house up in pinion hills. He ended up getting arrested for domestic violence and taken by the feds. Next thing I heard about him was his death in LA, I think about 2001. I had some good talks with him.

I like the new format of the bumper being more about the content we are about to see rather than the previous bumper. It’s more labor intensive and doesn’t necessarily work every time. But it’s more immersive.
