VIN checker worked fine for me thanks - 1980 UK MGBGT - results came in the same as those from the Original MG book. I was particularly interested in the engine decoder as don't think I've done that before. I remember going into my BL dealer parts dept about 30 years ago quoting my VIN (GVGE etc)...the man in a white lab coat behind the desk was momentariy phased - and was about to accuse me of getting it all wrong - until he remembered the bit about post 1979 cars!
My MGB was a former SCCA racecar. Except for a metal tag in the right side of the engine compartment (51741)no VIN number tags are on it anywhere else. The number is in the SCCA logbooks. I would like to find out more about it. It came with three engines so I don’t know which one was originally in the car. It left hand drive though.
Worked on my VIN, but says it's a 1968/1969 model. It's an early 1970 car. Also wonder what WE in my engine number is, as it was not mentioned in your video? It's a 18GG and then WE.
Tried the tool, chassis number on my '68 bgt not recognised. Chassis plate looks original but who knows? Emailed you feedback . Thanks for creating the checker 👍
RWC should be RWE on the > 18GD and < 18V engines. Also the VIN decoder tool does not work properly for USA VIN's where there is a digit for the model year from 1969/1970. I also don't think the R was ever used on the 5th location, only L and U where used.
Thanks for your comment - I haven't researched South African numbers, but did find this.. not sure if it helps mgccsouthernafrica.weebly.com/mgb-register.html
Please can you help Do you know if the registration number is related to the engine number I acquired a 1973 MGB GT earlier last year when I went to view the car i had an immediate feeling this was my car After talking with the owner for a few minutes I noticed the registration number had my initials and my birthdate It was a quick sale Many years ago I had a few pinin farina cars so I'm no stranger to classic cars After the last few months of on and off resto work on the MGB only a couple of days ago I looked at the engine number after watching your video for no reason really and it bares my exact date of birth Are these numbers related to the registration After mentioning the registration number to friends etc They say the car found me ???
Thanks for your comment - how interesting... clearly registration numbers are different depending on where you are... in the UK, numbers are allocated by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority and they have an identifier to show the age of the car. For example, the last letter of my MGB-GT is an "L" which means it was registered between August 1972 and July 1973 (March 1973 in fact). More recent systems have changed a bit but still identify the year. The latest registration will be XX74 XXX where the 24 identifies March to August 2024. Bizarrely, it then changes to 74 between September 2024 and February 2025! You can change plates around for a fee but you're not allowed to make a car appear newer by buying a more recent plate, and you have to buy the playe either directly or through a dealer (assuming its available). Not sure what happens in other countries. Sounds like your story could be a great one for our viewers cars feature - send me details via hello@classicmgb.com if you're interested!
Hi there, my VIN reads out like this. It’s found on the front right hand fender (to the left side when you open the bonnet)” GHN5 334881 G”. Clearly its not matching with what this video and the internet tells you. Can you help on how to decode it please? According to my logbook its a 1973 model but that is all I know.
Thanks for your comment - I used this page as my source :- www.mgexp.com/article/decoding-the-mgb-vin.175 which suggests that a G means 1976 but it seems there were several anomalies in the chassis numbering over the years!
@@ClassicMGB yeah but according to the number of the chassis it says 1973 and you can tell from the height of the car. if im not mistaken rubber bumpered MGB were higher from the front (mine is a chrome bumper)
Thanks for your comment - a bit confused though. I think the example in the video shows that its a 1972/1973 car - ruclips.net/video/OOIipS8c_00/видео.htmlsi=nV9UqrgWB_mjOh5O&t=152 Have I missed something?
Outstanding video covering chassis numbers covering all the MGBS.

Do you know if the registration number is related to the engine number
I acquired a 1973 MGB GT earlier last year when I went to view the car i had an immediate feeling this was my car
After talking with the owner for a few minutes I noticed the registration number had my initials and my birthdate
It was a quick sale

After the last few months of on and off resto work on the MGB only a couple of days ago I looked at the engine number after watching your video for no reason really and it bares my exact date of birth
Are these numbers related to the registration

The example you give for UK/US spec cars would be a 1973 (Aug/Sep 1972 to Jul/Aug 1973) not 1972 Model Year.
