  • The guitar that started it all on my channel. The Ibanez MTM2 gets some love and treatment from me. The Ibanez MTM2 was the Mick Thompson of Slipknot signature Ibanez guitar back in the day when he was with them.

@@aliascent it's been in my top 3 for guitars I'm looking into. My only hang up is I'm not a fan of the bridge system. I love that it's a hard tail instead of a floating trem, but I just prefer a standard string thru hard tail. But I'm definitely keeping an eye on it because it hits every other box. Black, reverse pointy headstock, no inlays on an ebony board, lone volume knob. Thanks for heads up!

I been stringing all my Floyds with the ball ends on the tuners for over 25 years. Yes, there are some folks who feel that doing it that way may somehow damage the tuning posts, but honestly I have never ever had or noticed any issues for all this time. Just make sure you wind the strings UNDER the ball ends for maximum stability - those ball ends will never ever move. And be sure that on the bridge side you run the strings past the end of the bridge locking keys plus a little bit before you cut, just to be safe. Another good idea I stole along the way is to use a toothpick and dab a drop or two of WD40 on the fine tuners every now and then and then work it in. And of course you should set the fine tuners all to about halfway every time you restring.
Nice guitar Ola - I don't recall seeing that kind of screw locking bolt on the Floyd business end before. Obviously it words to block off the trem - is it adjustable in terms of height so you can adjust the angle of the Floyd bridge? The stiff plastic brush/toothbrush is a must as is some air cleaner and while you're at it, some contact cleaner for the pots/output jack as well.
I think this is a GREAT series Ola. Go through your gear and do some setups - yes, there are a ton of setup vids on youtube, but like money, you can never have enough of those, especially if they are more recent. Plus right now, with folks under lockdown, doing guitar maintenance is both productive and for me, quite calming and zen. :)
And ya gotta get a bottle of Dunlop 65 fretboard oil for them rosewood boards - one bottle will last you a lifetime :)
    Cheers and stay safe!

GHS Boomers the crappiest strings ever made in my opinion. I prefer wizard style neck too.I took a belt sander to my Paul Reed Smith because it had a finish on the back of the neck. I took it down the bare wood and rubbed tung oil & linseed oil into it.that was about 10 years ago and the neck is just fine has super low action doesn't buzz and plays really incredible. You can move up and down the fingerboard at a million miles an hour if you want to,and the neck is not going to make your hand cramp up because it's not all beefy like a baseball bat. It's super, super thin.

I set up all my floating trem Ibbys as solid trems. I block them all and then take advantage of the stability of the double locking system and the extra comfort of having that kind of bridge. It's why Mick did the same (the RG2228 has the same setup) and so he's essentially getting all of the advantages of a double locking floating trem while having all of the stability of a fixed bridge system. It's the best of both worlds and why all of my guitars are soft tails even though I play them all and set them all up as hard tails.

You should have no shame regarding putting your ball-end in the head...stock. Jokes apart, Steve Vai has his guitars strung like that all the time. It's the fastest way to re-string a floyd and you can get the regular tuners to work like locking tuners if you do it right!

I had one it cost me £600 back then. I didn't like it either that fixed crazy bridge was a nightmare and the guitar was never in tune to record anything with it was a completely nightmare . I had a bit of fun with it not much but eventually I sold it a few year's ago...

#OlaEnglund. Ye have good tastes in guitars, that Ibanez MTM2 reminds me of one of my earlier fave guitars in my collection. Of course, ALL guitars in my collection are favorites, else no point in keeping them, eh? ;) Some are more favored than others, however.
It's a ~2001 Peavey Predator Plus HB, and it too, is an all-black axe with a white binding on the body. Aside from the Peavey logo on the headstock, everything else on guitar is Glossy Black. I have lots of plans for this axe, mainly to restore functionality (it had sat idle for an extended period of time before I bought it, unprotected against Hawaiʻi's corrosive climate) and it's cool monochromatic black look!
I have named this black beauty Pōʻeleʻele, the "Black Night." BTW, have ye named yer MTM2?

I've got the Black MTM2 and the White MTM2 in my collection. Kinda the same reason I liked them was the aesthetics. I don't struggle with the neck finish or profile that much, although I hear ya on the nice satin finishes like on the Prestige Ibanez's in my collection. For an import model I think they're not too shabby. The specs also really were in line with my tastes (blank fretboard, reverse head stock, offset single volume). I upgraded both of mine with the locking Gotoh MG-T tuners, Seymour Duncan Blackouts, PMT Lo-Bat LED Indicators, Pure Tone jacks, re-shielded the control cavities, full fret dress.... After I put in all the work/extras they're some of my favorite playing and sounding guitars. My white MTM2 is a little heavier than the Black MTM2 I've noticed, but they both sound pretty close and sustain for days.
Thanks for the vid Ola! Fingers crossed you can get Mick on for Coffee, that would be awesome.

I like the MT. One reason. Never a fan of Slipknot but dug info from a GW photo shoot with Mick and Root.
Mick is bored and rattles off a bunch of YJM lines, unplugged.
Tolinski or whomever goes "What the heck is this!?! You know this stuff?"
Mick,,,"Yngwie's a god. This doesn't fit into our music".

I bought an Ibanez RG2EX1 off some dude in his garage for 100 bucks one day. Aesthetically looks extremely similar to the MTM2 but better in certain ways. The neck is a satin natural finish so it's not sticky, fretboard has inlays(my personal preference, and it has a hipshot style bridge. I had always wanted an MTM2 and the RG2EX1 fulfilled that desire but for a fraction of the price and with some better features for me. :) Best 100 bucks I've spent. It's been with me for almost a decade now and funny enough, the only guitar that's survived my gear purges so far due to having no reason to sell such a solid guitar at such a insanely low price.

Hey OLA I am going to start playing 8 strings. What is the neck like on the 8 string Solar? After I get my Ibanez I want another one and trying to decide. My favorite necks are the wizards that Ibanez make is the SOLAR'S neck comparable to the wizards. I live the thin necks and can't stand thick necks at all. I have no where to try one out either. Also how is the set up out of the box? Will I have to do any adjustments to get it to play better? I seen a review on the LAGATORS and for the money It got trashed on reveiws cause it needed shimmed, strings adjusted, and Intunation along with pick up adjustments. They needed all kinds of work and the guitars are like $1,000 - 1500 bucks. It was called a hunk of junk.

I seek out guitars with that fixed edge bridge. Having a few hipshot bridge/locking tuners equip'd neck-through guitars, I can honestly say, they suck, the tuning stability in a guitar with a locking nut is incomparable. The person that re-designs the locking nut (with more radiused edges, like the Ibanez JCRG-3VV had) and pairs it with a fixed bridge, like the hipshot will probably sell a ton of guitar's. If there is anything this new generation of players is missing, it's the turning stability of a locking nut and having fine tuners...locking nuts and fine tuners dont HAVE to be a Floyd thing, someone just needs to market it right :)

I kinda like a thin neck profile, all my old Jackson's have it, and my custom LP has one on it too! (Coz that's how I wanted it) My YJM Strat - not so much. And my Ace Frehley custom feels like a baseball bat when I take it out, which isn't often! I do love the lighting bolt fret markers on it though. V⚡🏴

@Ola Englund I really like this type of gear review/update with little facts thrown in here and there!! The MTM2 was specifically geared for Mick's super thick strings and low tuning, whereas normally you don't have as much finger strength on people with short stubby fingers like me lol so the neck is very thin to allow easier playability with the heavy strings. Also, he used a floating bridge for easier tuning and drop tuning. The MTM1 came in black and red colors and yours, the MTM2 came in black red and white. The white with black outlines was my fave out of them. If I'm not mistaken, that's an edge 2 pro bridge right?

no shit.. ola the mtm2(er). my first main guitar was a white mtm2. i didnt play it before buying, i saw it and wanted it. My first Thomann order..
if the bridge wasnt so frail that parts of it break after 5-10 years(or after 15-30string changes), basically forcing a replacement it would be fucking perfect for me. Neck doesnt hinder me, i wanted something as flat as possible and i got that lul.
Still use it in rehearsals and its standing right next to me looking over

    Hey Ola.
If you want to solve this problem of the neck finish if you have time and a sandpaper you can apply it calmly (Don't forget before protecting the headstock region (just below the locking nut fixing screws) and on region close to the neck joint with masking tape (Those wide automotive ones are great) including, I would recommend applying the tape in the region of the neck binding to prevent the sandpaper from damaging the finish in that region.
With a little patience (And be careful) you will leave the matte aspect and playability more like a guitar with a waxed neck (Think about Music Man).
Below is a video where a boy does the process on his schecter, it is very rustic:
    ruclips.net/video/OfRNDI_bzl0/видео.html
If... If you want to do it and don't feel safe, your trusted luthier can do it without too many problems and thus improve the instrument's playability.

Ola why not tape off the neck heel down low and the back of headstock near string nut and take the finish off with a sander? Re-profile the neck to a shape you do like...it doesn't sound like you plan to part with it , so make it something you like.... I have done the same thing with a (much cheaper) RG5EX1 ....I took the square feeling shoulders off the neck where it meets the fretboard....mine has the same neck profile as the RGT42 which is a great guitar but a BIG clumsy feeling neck makes it blah
