@@HollyFurgason It is not a law; It is something that goes back to the Homestead Act of 1862 regarding abandoned property. It's an arcane "act" that people try to use as a loop hole. The property has to Truly be abandoned. The "Squatters" also have to pay properties taxes if they want to live there. Someone cannot break into another person's house, move there things in and change the locks!

Meanwhile working tax payer dollars support that prison and their lawyer for YEARS before they are finally ended...if not die of old age IN PRISON WAITING for their own death. Just the same as a squatter having more rights than a homeowner! They don't get removed swiftly unless they murder the homeowner...THEN they removed by arrest. This world is SO BACKWARD globally. 🙄😔

This just happened with my neighbor. Old man who had dementia, just lost his wife and too nice of a heart. It killed him and in Kentucky, it's zero amount of days. If you invite someone to stay over, they can automatically claim residency. Not kidding. She took his car, wrecked it, abused him and had ppl constantly in and out. No car, no way to his cancer treatments and within a matter of months, I watched a man go from super self efficient and capable to a cowering emancipated old man that got to sit home alone, infested with bugs from her... While he waits on his car that hardly ever comes back. Police called tons of times. I eventually had to just whip the shit outta her and make her come through me after we put him in a hospice place. No way she was getting in there to take the few things he had left. Bye Felicia. It's crazy! And criminals are finding out and it's all over here. What is unbelievable to me is how unfazed and nonchalant some of these homeowners are about being robbed and forcefully evicted from their own homes by squatters, aka thieves. This isn't just a "crazy" situation, its an absolutely DEVASTATING situation. Most people cannot afford to pay a mortgage and rent somewhere else. They can't afford to become embroiled in the judicial nightmare necessary to fight this lawfare, nor do they have the time. It would be a total loss for most people. I find nothing remotely interesting or amusing about these scenarios but rather a sense of absolute outrage for the homeowner. The courts are facilitating theft and vandalisn. Thou shalt not steal.

This happened to an elderly woman I knew twenty years ago living alone in a three-bedroom house in a nice family neighborhood. A handyman who she hired for odd jobs took a room, moved in his girlfriend, and they were taking over her house like it was theirs. They were playing electric guitars and walking around naked.
She called the police, and they told the police that they were helping her, and the police listened to them and wouldn't remove them. She wound up dying from the stress, and one of the neighbors said she was happy they finally got her out so a nice family could move in. That is how single women with property are treated by the corrupt police in the USA.
I think certain people are just targeted by the police for mistreatment. It can't be a matter of you hire a neighbor to do odd jobs and suddenly he claims it is his house. The police are not enforcing burglary, breaking and entering, trespassing, and harassment laws.

For all of you asking why do squatters have rights, it's because the law gives them those rights. They are property rights granted by the state and not inalienable human rights.
Back in the day, when people needed land to survive, the law allowed people to settle on unworked land (meaning the landowner couldn't work it himself) and if the squatter worked the land, they could keep it. These laws are archaic and were never meant to allow people to break into homes and instantly claim rights. The laws need to change to protect the property owners.

Rule # 1 broken already…do not disclose to anyone, much less contractors who were hired to paint the house or anyone for that matter, that you will be gone from the home for an extended period of time. Scumbags will come back and rob you blind or destroy the house like what happened to this innocent homeowner 😢

No consequences means just what it states on the label. The laws favor squatters. Essentially, once they move in, they own the property. There's nothing you can do about it. Not unless you're super wealthy, powerful, influential, connected, etc.

The police need to make the squatters overtake the Judges, DA's and Politicians homes !! Then we will see how long it takes to get the laws changed. The appointed people are WORSE than the criminals and squatters.

OK I understand that it’s a simple matter for what they described but what about the theft? How is the theft of civil matter? That’s my question her dryer existed and then it doesn’t exist. How is that not a crime? How is there? No charges at all for like the damage to the property like if you go into a store and break things it’s criminal. I don’t understand what’s going on here like what legal system is this that’s allowing this level of destruction. And theft.

What is the difference between breaking and entering, home invasion and squatting? They are all only equal to the first mentioned, “ breaking and entering “. What is the difference between your Credit Card being stolen, your drivers license being stolen and your property being stolen, only to be used in fraudulent use? It is called Identity Thieves, fraudulent. So why even here a reporter afraid to use the real terms of these “squatters”? As thieves, 1 identity thieves, 2 breaking and entering
