    There were 1,400 who died on October 7th in the abhorrent attacks, and she says that every Israeli knows someone effected directly by it. But then there have been 9,922+ Palestinians killed along with 26,000+ injured since then, so how many Palestinians do you think know someone directly affected? 4,880 children have been killed by this government in their indiscriminate bombings of civilians. Two wrongs do not make a right so stop acting like what this government is doing is ok.

      There didn't seem to be any sympathy for the Palestinian lives that was lost. All I heard was the loss the Jews suffered. There are two sides to this story and these young ladies didn't seem to realize that, very disappointing. There was no push back from the host.

      There are 49-50 thousand Hamas operatives in Gaza. There is no Free Press in Gaza. The numbers you are hearing are from Hamas. The same group who blamed Israel for destroying a hospital and 500 deaths. The hospital was not destroyed, a misfired rocked from Islamic Jihad landed in the parking lot. If I hear there are 30K deaths in Gaza, I am going to assume almost all of those numbers are Hamas fighters.

    In 1975 I was a student at Stony Brook university in Long Island. There was a support for Palestine rally at the student union, and I went to listen to the speakers , in an attempt to understand the positions of the people attending the rally. During the presentations I was standing listening when I noticed a previous speaker ,and I engaged her in a conversation! I specially asked her, if she felt as I do, that in the end the only way to have peace in the region was for both sides to abandon violence, and work together towards the establishments of a two state solution. At that moment her faced turned into a portrait of hate, and she screamed at me, less than a few inches from my face, screaming” the only answer is the complete elimination of Israel and it’s people “. I stared at her asking that was not an option, in my eyes, where were the Israelis , who had a legitimate claim on the land, historically to go? She became even more angry and screamed, they all need to be exterminated. I had never encountered such open irrational hatred in my life! I was in S shock. I thought about her response, and calmly said,I was sympathetic to both sides, and asked, “even the children”?
    She exploded and replied even babies. I never forgot that day!

    I was looking forward to hearing a moderated debate between passionate young people, and no one should ever be inundated with hate speech or threatened with violence. But these ladies are equating anyone who questions the Israeli government, with being anti-Semetic. They are not the same thing and we’ve painted ourselves into a very dangerous corner when making that claim. Because what’s being asked by that is to allow the far-right, fundamentalist leadership in Israel (their equivalent to Donald Trump), to not be held accountable for their actions - ever. The world is not going for that nonsense, that’s the talk of dictators. Israel has the right to live peacefully and thrive within the territory last agreed upon, I believe that was in 1967. Palestinians deserve to live peacefully with sovereignty and equal standing in the world as Israel within the territory that was agreed upon. No more bombing, no more control, each country living and mixing their own business. But, neither the IDF nor Hamas want a win-win, both sides only care about having it all for themselves. I dare these young women to go to Gaza, feel firsthand the fear the Palestinian children and young face every day.

They took people who had not lived there for hundred if not thousands of years and dropped them in another people's land where they killed thousand and drove them out of their homes into the surrounding countries. Then took their land and made them minorities intheir own country. The USA armed them to the teeth and gave them advanced weapons and training and built them up while simultaneously destabilizing, invading, sabotaging,destoying, and economically controlling the middle eastern countries around them through Isreal. This is America's Trojan horse in the middle east and anyone with common sense can see this Killing Omar Gaddafi, propping up Sudaam, invading Iraq, playing part in the Syrian crisis, plans against Qatar, trying to destroy Iran, and the list goes on even into bordering Africa. No they are not innocent and any well educated people know this that's why colleges are in turmoil over this Palestinian holocaust. No the surrounding countries do not want to accept a people with no home because they will want to make their home wherever they are settled into. They will not want to stay a homeless minority at the whim of another people's government. They will be a threat to those countries and take resources from their people who will fight back. No Palestinians should have their own land, government, resources and home just like any other people period.

Just because these women have pale skin, they are "the same people doing the hating"? Generalizing an entire race is literally the definition of racism, please do some self reflection on the validity and morality of your views. Also, this isn't a pity party. How would you like it if you wanted to talk about hate speech directed at you and your race, and then someone responds with "I can't help but think about the hatred that ____ people experience every day," and "us ____ people have it worse, you did the hating but now you care when it affects you" 🤦🏻‍♂️ such a factually false and irrelevant comment to make right now. Perhaps we should just have meetings where every type of person tries to convince the rest of the people in the room that they are the biggest victim and that everyone should drop what they are doing and attend to their needs. Please, grow up. Everyone deserves to be heard, and every problem deserves a solution. Try not to hijack every racism discussion to make everything about yourself, or about black people. • @LilyJaneH
    @LilyJaneH 11 месяцев назад +51

    I’m alarmed by this piece. It really feels like it has really heavily leaned into the fallacy that criticizing Israel is the same as antisemitism. They are not the same thing. I want in the room listening to their professors, nor was I present at any of the protests that they’re referencing, so I take them at their word on those points. The threats of violence, the bomb threats, the professors becoming exhilarated by the actions of Hamas, the antisemitism, none of that is excusable. But one of them did say that her professor was discussing Israel as an oppressive force in its region. She described it as propaganda and mistrust, but that’s not really accurate. To point out that Israel is oppressive to the people of the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and especially Gaza is not antisemitic, it is just factual. Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank have had their allotted land reduced, sometimes illegally even by Israel’s own acknowledgement, by Israeli settlements. Palestinians from the West Bank can get permits to work inside of Israel, but have several career fields closed off to them inside of Israel and fewer rights than Israelis. Gaza is much worse. Israel has cut Gaza off from the rest of the world for sixteen years. Since Israel withdrew its troops from Gaza, they have blockaded the territory, controlling the supply of food, water, electricity, and medical supplies. They control its borders. They say who can come in and who can go out. It’s been described as an open air prison, and it can be considered effectively occupied, in spite of the lack of troops due to how complete the blockade is. It’s not very fertile for crops, so most of the food in Gaza comes from foreign aid. It covers an area about twice the size of Washington, D.C., but has nearly triple the population. Unemployment in Gaza is staggering, about 45% before the outbreak of war. 80% of people in Gaza rely on foreign aid to survive, aid which has now been all but completely cut off. Much of that is due to Israel’s actions, largely how they partitioned the region, keeping the most fertile crop land in Palestine for Jews, and pushing Palestinian Arabs out of those prosperous areas.
    The government of Gaza is a terrorist organization, Hamas. They use their own citizens as human shields. They do not care about their people. Israel possesses the 18th most powerful military in the world. They have about 169,500 active duty personnel. Hamas is estimated to have about 25,000 members on the high end. Israel could absolutely destroy Hamas militarily, but that would likely only be a temporary respite. To annihilate Hamas would either mean enormous civilian casualties or a complete genocide of Gaza.
    When you have enormous civilian casualties, you further destabilize the area, making people more desperate and more easily radicalized. When you try to get rid of a large terrorist movement with violence, their numbers often simply rise. If the young people of an area have had their homes and families destroyed, they often turn to a group that they think can protect them. The better way to reduce terrorism is the same as the general best way to reduce crime; decrease desperation. Desperate people are dangerous people. Desperation makes us more willing to cross lines we never thought possible for us. But even if you got rid of desperation, there will still be terrorists. Contain the threat as well as you can and minimize civilian casualties.
    The other option to eliminate the threat of Hamas is to exterminate the Palestinians of Gaza. That would be genocide. Revital Gottlieb of the Israeli Knesset and member of Netanyahu’s party called for Jericho missiles, a “Doomsday weapon” which can carry nuclear weapons, which Israel possess.
    Finally, Israel’s bombing campaign has killed over 8,000 Palestinians, more than 3,000 of whom were children. Very free people are actually able to leave Gaza, so being told to flee just means packing more people into a tiny space that is already overcrowded. It cannot be practically executed sustainably.
    Basically, while Hamas is an organization built on terrorism and the eradication of the Israeli state, their horrific deeds do not excuse those of Israel, nor do Israel’s excuse those of Hamas. The lack of humanity on the part of both parties is staggering, and the support of so many governments around the world for this wanton destruction of life is sickening.

I would also not be surprised if you were one of the people singing “from the river to the sea” and then claiming that Israel is committing genocide. The Koran speaks of killing non-believers and the other scripture speaks of "The Jews being the chose people of God" if they could put down these ancient beliefs and rather see there common traits then peace has a chance. While I think flag burning is an inarticulate form of protest, it is perfectly legal and harms no one and nothing except for the piece of cloth. I don't think that a mature person would do it. But to interfere in any way, especially with the threat of violence, or violence itself is equally immature and escalates the anger...unnecessarily.
    I am also optimistic that some of the antisemitism and anti Palestinian anger and hateful language comes out of fear and furious frustration and that many will calm down and see the error of their ways. I have no idea how many, but I also hope many will find ways to apologize and make amends. There is an old saying that goes "We can grow the most through adversity." I pray that a great deal of growth healing will come from this. And these conversations are vitally important. I look forward to many more. But in the meantime, these are additional world events that are breaking my heart.

      Wow this is like the only reasonable criticism/comment I've seen in this whole section. Thank you. I think it is technically legal to burn a flag in protest so as much as it sucks, they have a right to do it. My only question was if it is legal to do it on a campus or public street with a lot of people around. Seems like a safety hazard. But also, it's crazy how anti-semitic a lot of the people in the comments are. This wasn't a debate. it was to raise awareness about the increased anti-semitism yet the first instinct of the people in the comments was to play the what about game and mock the girls for grieving. That is what concerns me. There should be compassion shown to both sides of innocent civilians and I think it is really lacking in this conflict.
