- Today James has been driving the new Tesla Model Y Long Range. Based on the Model 3 but with a hatch, more load space and the very popular SUV style, this looks to be a cracking EV. Join us to find out how we got on.

Thanks for this review of the UK MY, I think probably you are the first one since yesterday as they were delivered yesterday int the Uk! Well done!👍
I subscribed for your channel.
Another great review by James .I bought my Mg5 based on your review and have no regrets.A neighbour of mine asked could I recommend an EV van.I told him to look the reviews you had done on vans.As a direct result he bought a Maxus eDeliver 3 and is loving it.So if you ever make it to Dublin,SAIC and MG owe you commission on 2 sales.Best wishes to you and the 2 girls in your life.Keep up the great content.
That’s amazing to hear, thank you ❤️
Good on you for pointing out the rear seat cushion removal option and also a good look at the front suspension design.
About that I wouldn't do that as the metal beam can leave permanent marks on the seat.
Thanks for making this. Very helpful
Picked up same spec as this yesterday, love it! One thing to note about the ride, it appears that all 22 delivered cars have been delivered without shipping tyre deflation meaning they are running from 7-9psi over the recommended PSI. For those that feel the ride is to hard this should slightly improve the situation.

One of the most honest and informative MY reviews I have seen. Most car journos just want to focus on everything that is bad and go on a the usual Tesla bash
Looking forward to picking mine up when the P come later this year. This will satisfy me until then 😂
Oh exactly my spec thanks James, looks superb,
Great review - thanks. Excited for mine to land
Really love the engineering content thanks
I have one coming in March. My M3 is 2021 with just 3500 on it over the year. It’s been perfect in every way hence why I’m sticking with Tesla. This was a good review James & one I was hoping you would do. I like your no nonsense, say it as you see it approach. Remember if you are down my way that cuppa I promised you is still available. Mike

Exactly the same configuration as mine. White, black interior and Gemini wheels. 9th of March, can’t wait to pick it up. Good review
Congratulations, you’ll love it. I’d be pulling the reins off and running around with the alloys tbh.
Useful video thank you! The upgrades over the Model 3 make it worth the extra money.
Fantastic review!
it's really great how you review the cars 👍👍, unlike how Italians do it who insist on reviewing only the software part and leaving out everything else .. nice review really good ..
James the engineer's summary: not willy wallowy and not that crap 😂
Sorry couldn't resist, great review as ever. 👍
😂😂😂😂
Thanks James. Excellent review. Will be swapping my M3LR to a Y when the contract hire ends.
Not surprised one is coming, aftermarket boot covers are available! Mine was delivered today.
Nice one James. Good review.
Great video. Waiting for our Vin code. Hopefully in next few months. Can't wait.
Great review, i cant wait for mine to come hopefully in June
Nice review. I ordered a LR back in October then my speed demon kicked me and I changed it to a performance! Delivery time got Later and later and now it’s showing late 2022 and although it’s potentially a German build their factory is up the creek with red tape delays so I bit the bullet and changed order back to LR,white with black interior (wife pressured away from white as we’ve a big dog so parcel shelf’s redundant and we’ve little grandchildren!) but I stood firm on the black 20” wheels which I understand are shod with Michelins 🙂. Better still I get to pick up in March and I can always (likely) download the performance boost with the cash I saved on the performance order🥳
That's almost exactly what we'll be doing, apart from the wheels that is.
Bugger ... England 1, Australia 0. lol Still waiting for Tesla to turn on the pre ordering down here for the Model Y. However seeing you James in a RHD is very encouraging besides the great review as always. Cheers and have a great day
Will be best selling car in Europe 2022 (if they can complete German/EU regulatory due diligence in timely fashion). Glad you have confirmed its reputation as outstanding machine, streets ahead of trad OEM cars.
Great review 👍
Great video, expected you to say a swap is on the cards !
There are 3rd party parcel shelves available but I don't have one since you can't see in with the dark tinting. I love my '21 North American Model Y....no bio filter, but you can buy aftermarket hepa filters to replace the cheap factory ones
Frunk is shallower but deeper, just contradicted yourself 😂
Nice, plain and simple. Summary: getting one ☝️😀
Good review nice car hope if you get one you will be happier than the model 3 keep up good work any trips coming up.👍👍👍
James you need to do more reviews like this. The only review I've seen where I see the reviewer take the car apart, literally, removing the back seat base looking into the suspension plus removing the cover on the bioweapon filter access. Is this the standard range plus version of the Y? Do you also happen to know what type of battery is in it, LFP or NMC or another?
There is no SR+ version of the Y
That's why James is the only EV reviewer worth watching. He works on the cars every day and is not afraid to give honest opinions.I love his on the road videos where he shows the problems he comes up against doing routine repairs and servicing on cars.
Def. NMC. LFP won’t be able to do 82kWh yet. Not enough kWh/m3/weight.
Just the level I wanted. Cheers.
Now this is what I call a 'proper' review by a guy who knows his stuff because he works on them for a living so has real credence. Of interest is that other UK reviews have slammed the Y's suspension to it being a deal breaker yet it doesn't appear to be an issue for James. Not sure what to make of that whether it's objective or subjective ....
I found the suspension fine. It’s really much better than our 3 and that was ever sent from early on. There’s minimal body roll too, but the balance is just right.
Drove it on Sunday, suspension was fine.
Likewise, felt no worse than our Golf for roughness/feeling the road. I assume your reaction to it depends what you’ve been driving already
If you have driven a Mercedes with air suspension, then this probably will feel firm. I think at 55k upwards, people are expecting better suspension
Agree great review however after driving the Y the suspension feeling was a deal breaker for me, felt like a road bike with no suspension. But that aside a great car, I’d give it the benefit of the doubt and would like to try it with 19” wheels. I am coming from a Merc EV with Air suspension so might be a tad unfair but I couldn’t have lived with it
Nice car thanks for another great video update. Our wipers was bad before recent Service centre Vist I didn’t use auto wipers but they re-calibrated the camera or cameras due to a error we was having and now the auto wipers are 95% perfect a great improvement ! So it is possible to get usable auto wipers on a 3 . Not been out in the dark since been to sc but the auto headlights was The worst auto dipping we had a lot worse that our last car the Zoe ze50 so it mite go out one night on purpose to check 🧐🤔 . Take care and safe travels everyone
The best Auto dipping headlights I've ever had are on my current Kia eNiro...they are faultless😀
@@chrisp7214 yer our Zoe ze50 light was great too and using the fog lights as cornering light was great yes lots of cars do it but nice to have it . Properly set up the 2019 m3 has good lights heard the refresh lights are even better and auto lights as lot better since being re-calibrated are mostly ok
Excellent review
One of the best reviews. Brilliant!
Great thoughts on this MY. Would you say that the suspension feels softer than that of M3?
It feels softer than our M3P for sure. I was happy with the Y set-up.
Nice review
Our M3SR+ LFP from China is THE bargain of the century in Australia, and will take us retired ones up to 300 miles on it’s piddling 50 kWh battery if you transit a large (Australian) city en route and stay in the left lane at 90-100 kph (55-60 mph).
Shanghai makes a great car which becomes an investment the longer you keep it.
I hope you get one. Nice video.
Just ordered it.
Drove one back from Southampton yesterday. Didn’t have any issue with the wipers ? Perhaps something I will understand over time
Give it time, it'll get you. Apart from the few minor issues, the car is spot on, hope you enjoy yours.
Glad you said the ride wasn’t too firm. I’ve got one on order, coming from a Kia eniro 3, as a taxi driver. But as I’ve a broken back, ride comfort is really important, plus ride comfort for my passengers. Remember test driving the model 3 & they only had a performance version at Cambridge at the time & I had to stop the test drive after 10mins as the ride was far to harsh.
I test drive the model Y from Chelmsford on 14/2, but wasn’t able to have the car for longer than 20mins (mostly spent in a traffic jam) and 20mins is not a sufficient time to test drive any vehicle in my mind, especially when laying out over £50k. But soon I’ll have a navy model Y in the Stansted airport/Bishop’s Stortford area if anyone wants a taxi ride in one
Actually the ride is one of the most common complaints about this car.... it's a bit firm and you feel every bump however the front seats provide excellent comfort so that helps a bit
@@lenimbery7038 I agree. I have the Y with the 20in induction wheels. It feels so solid and connected to the road. I don't want it to be mushy and couch like
If you want more comfort put 18 inch tires, watch Bjorn Nylan .
It certainly felt more comfortable on the 19” Gemini wheels than my 2019 LR3 with 18” Aeros when I test drove it recently
It is not much different from Model3, pretty much the same suspension...
Absolutely brilliant, forensic detail. I wasn't too bothered about the Y previously. Now? Maybe... 😀
Just ordered one. I recon you and your good lady will be fine with it 👍🏻
Looking forward to seeing them around now. Hopefully we get a price cut when they’re made in Berlin. They’re just too expensive right now, a lot more than we were made to believe they would be.
Yes because it's standard business practice to to cut the price of items that are production limited.
@@alanrickett2537 lol yeah exactly.
@@alanrickett2537 Because Elon said there would be massive production efficiencies out of Berlin which would cut the cost. He regularly says the cars are too expensive… Plus cutting the price supports the master plan.
@@theta2170 it's possable but I think ramping factories or 4680s or bring the 25,000 dollar car online faster are better at advancing the goal
@@theta2170 Also cars imported from outside the EU to the UK have a 10% duty applied so if Tesla make RHD vehicles in Berlin they could be imported to the UK about £5k cheaper than from Shanghai. Whether Tesla would pass the cost saving on or not is a different matter.
12V socket in the rear and front in Y. Only in center console in the front for the 3
Thanks James, it was a really good review. Hope you guys get a new Y
Hi James, I’d b interested to know, if I don’t need a massive boot space, there’s only 2 of us and we don’t haul big objects, is it worth switching into a Y from my M3LR?
I found the suspension much better and I also liked the higher driving position and access, because I’m getting old. That’s a tricky question. The 3 is more sporty, more efficient and quicker. The Y rides better, bigger battery and the reasons above.
Use are about the only people on RUclips I trust to put a honest fair review up, so that's been very helpful for my wife and I. 👍
Thank you 🙏🏻
Have you got your own one now James? What was the trade in on the 3 like. I just can’t decide whether to lease or buy. As its a company car the accountant says lease…
Great review. Did you get the green light to order one?
Just done it, Tim.
Mine is delivered 3/3/22 … excited 😆
250kw supercharging peak
Loved my test drive - Tesla still ahead of everyone else (currently testing an ID4 for a week)
How did you find the ID4? We tested a few (e-tron, Ioniq 5, EV6) and that Tesla Y won us over. Also noticed to get those other EV's in to The Model Y specs they will cost near enough the same.
@@roxy-and-friends yeah I found it okay - but the screen was very slow/hard to use Vs Tesla one. Also efficiency about 20% worse than Model Y too.
Overall Tesla still king by a healthy margin
The parcel shelf might be a deliberate thing - i know in the States they had a spate of break-ins where the small window behind the rear door pillar was smashed to get access to the boot - at one time i think people were advised not to have the shelf in if they had empty boots - so potential robbers would see there's nothing there and there's no point breaking in.
Now this is the first Tesla I would be willing to own. Great review James. Thanks
It's funny how you always want to dislike Teslas but just can't seem to get away from them! I appreciate your honesty though. Would you be able to make another video detailing common issues you have found with certain EV models. You've mentioned previously brake issues with certain Teslas but it would be good to get an update on that :)
Certainly, we’ll get that done
Absolutely fabulous! Thank you for the review.
Nice car James
Excellent review as always; I’ll be holding off till the German cars become available and things have bedded in. But for me it is the Tesla I’ve been waiting for. Increased flexibility, room, range and towing capacity!
Hopefully we get a nice price cut out of Germany too, as Elon has promised.
@@theta2170 That would be a nice bonus!
Access is amazing. Very noticeable after falling in to a M3 for a few years.
@@Jamesandkate Yes, that’s another plus! So the next question is: Get one now or wait for the German cars?
@@craigevans6156 We are buying now.. more price increases are on the way.. and more demand as fuel prices soar.. the Y was the no.1 selling car in California last month and new orders (depending on spec) are getting pushed back to December 2022 Or even back to march 2023!
Wow, at 4:30 the luggage space is impressive. More than 800 litres with the seats up and more than 2000 litres with the rear seats folded plus more than 100 litres in the frunk. Looking forward to a more affordable single motor rear wheel drive standard range version with the structural battery.
I got one of the few SR rear wheel drive ones in Canada which were only available for a couple of months last year before being cancelled. I don't know if you'll ever see a SR one coming back again though
@@lenimbery7038 I think it is slightly different for Europe as we don't have as large expanses of land between chargers, and especially here in the UK an SR would be more than sufficient. They do already sell a RHD SR/Single motor in Hong Kong made in China, as that is where we receive our Y/3's it's not too far a stretch for it to be made available here hopefully
Yep. A cheaper variant is desperately needed. They’ve got lots of competition over here and they’re priced too high.
@@samgreen4148 Yes you're right. btw, I've had no problems with my SR in Canada but then I don't take a lot of long road trips. Once they make the CCS adaptor available here, it will also open up many more charging options
@@theta2170 yeah desperately needed by us but not by Tesla unfortunately (far more demand than they can service) so we won’t see a reasonably priced Tesla for years, if ever.
The Y should have the double layer glass in the back too. 2021 M3 has it up front.
It does.
I’ve never found the auto wipers to be a problem. They’re better than in my previous car an F30 BMW PHEV.
Good honest review, we’re the rear passenger windows also double glazed?
They certainly are.
Great news, I've got 2 on order with a March delivery.
Great video. New model 3s are double glazed. The new 3s are quite close to the Y and quite a bit cheaper.
Great review. Your estimate of range was a worry though. My E-Niro gets better than that. I need a reliable motorway range of 270. Is it worth waiting for the 4860 battery?
My sentiment exactly.Needs a 90kwh battery?
Got a test drive in one on Saturday in Chelmsford Tesla looking for to it
That's a huge luggage space, but no cover is a bit safety issue in an accident. The other downside is of course security.
Frunk?
Great review. Can’t wait for mine. Decided not to wait for a Berlin Y after hearing they may not tool Berlin up for right hand drives
Who told you that? Berlin will serve the whole of Europe. That’s literally the point.
@@theta2170 not sure who said it in the EV ether but there’s an element of business sense to it…why tool up Berlin for a very small RHD market when Shanghai is already doing it and doing it well. Be sad if we have to wait an even longer time for 4680 batteries but I personally can wait no longer and at 10% depreciation of my Model 3 in the first year I’ll be happy to trade in early again if Berlin gets RHD Model Ys with 4680 batteries in the future
@@theta2170 You proved my point again. Pointless incorrect comments. Germany is serving EU. We are RHD they are not doing that for the near future (years)
@@johnwark7970 Wrong again! Berlin will serve the UK market as it's right next door and more cost effective than shipping from China. You're on a role of incorrect statements it seems. Sorry for your loss.
agree with you on auto wipers, my Hyundai seems to do random things, why can't we just have intermittent wiper setting? Rear view, looks similar to Hyundai Ioniq (28kwh / old model) all up though, very nice car. thanks for sharing
Model Y frunk is "a little bit shallower but a little bit deeper". Thanks for the insight....
As I watched the footage back I noticed, but you're the only one to mention it so far, so I'll take it as a win.
@@Jamesandkate .... so is it deeper or not?
Brilliant honest review. I like it.
Just a quick question to give me a reference of the head space, what’s your height?
That’s a tricky one. I’m only 5ft 10” but I have an abnormally long back and neck so when I sit next to my friends that are 6ft 5”, I’m taller. Head space is really ok 👍🏻
@@Jamesandkate Cheers James 👍
They get it as 7 seat option. That's why it's not fitted with the shelf I think.
It’s a little bit shallower but a little bit deeper. 😂
Bio weapon defence handy for year moving forward so.
Big car for carrying people, nice head room, Large bus for goods
So quick enough for an 20 I’s plenty,
Suspension always comes back as hard, they seem to have changed the suspension judgment of your experience.
Do you think they have changed the suspension or are you a hard ride fan?
Good review and your opinion is worth ten of these other reviews
Seems good. I did like it when I sat in it.
What size wheels ? 19 inch? as I heard on another video that the ride will be better on the smaller wheels
Those are the 19” Gemini wheels
The German car should be "interesting".
Structural pack improving the stiffness and what should be a 300kg(?) weight reduction will make the ride more compliant.
Maybe even a suspension work over from the German engineers?
Not to mention less weight = more range and 4680 cells will charge like a beast.
Berlin cars won't have 4680 at first
What was your opinion regards the ride quality compared to your model 3 as other tests have said it's overly hard and not as comfortable as the 3?
That road wasn't a billiard table.
I found it spot on. Remember I have a M3P and the ride is awful on that.
Great review matey , should i swap my e niro for the Y in 2 years time 🤔 ? It looks like I'd fit in it , thing is I'm loving my 3.9 miles per kWh average in my niro after 9000 miles !
I think if you drove one, you’d have it. Nice high up position, great access front and rear, and the space is just 👌🏻
In 2 years? That German car will be "A different kettle of fish"
@@rogerstarkey5390 2 years time my PCH will be up on my niro
I regularly get over 4.0 MPK in my Kia eNiro, and about 200 miles range in this cra**y winter weather.
I'm thinking this won't achieve the 3.9 m/kwh which I am achieving as well on my 2nd eNiro and that makes me slightly disappointed.
Nice review. Interesting that it looks like the car didn't have Version 11 of the software installed? Too true about the auto wipers. They are shockingly bad on my Model 3 as well.
James I did a back to back test drive with a Model 3. Overall the model 3 was a 'nicer' car to drive! It rode the potholes far better than the Model Y. The Model Y had a rear scuttle shake which took the gloss off the interior noise. Again the Model 3 was a quieter car over minor A roads and some B roads around Guildford. Yes the auto wipers are pants! Having owned a Jaguar I-Pace I was disappointed by the Model Y. I was impressed by the Tesla algorithm for regen, no need to change that. The seats are OK but nothing special, compared to Jaguar, Audi, Mercedes and the Ford Mach E. Apart from the usual Tesla gripes, the non cancelling indicators and having to ;learn virtually every menu option to be able to change the radio channel etc. it is an OK car to drive. If Tesla introduced a Heads Up display it would get my vote and I'd order one! By the way, it is the style of that type of car that makes the rear view shocking, so why don't all manufacturers feed the camera output to the interior mirror? Last thing my Model Y and Model 3 testers had 20" wheels shod with Michelins. So it is probably what tyres are available that go on!
Ive driven it. Model Y looks better than 3, goes better and handles perfect..........but.....I forgot I dont like being wobbled around side to side and that problem applies to all SUVs, so not for me Ill stick with my old Model S, brilliant review hit all salient points, and lets face it tail gate its a no brainier this is gonna sell like hot cakes.
Two negatives if Tesla fit the parcel shelf. Rear view I’d give just half a negative as one can see out of it, mores to the point I drive a camper and the rear view is zero I rely on side mirrors as do most van drivers and a reversing camera. This is the Tesla I’ve been waiting for, will change next year when they come out of Germany.
Better rethink as UK models confirmed won't be out of Germany for a while - they are concentrating on Europe as it costs too much to keep switching production LHD to RHD. China have RHD production for Hong Kong. All goes on cost and efficiency hence Tesla has best margins in auto industry.
Richard Symons said the sound deadening is much better on the UK cars. The panels sound solid when you give them the knock test. ✊ nice thud instead of hollow tin sound.
He was demonstrating the German aftermarket sound deadening kit fitted by their new affiliate.
I think RSymons were using the crowd in Germany to put in sound insulation in the panels of the 3 and Y? It wasn't standard with Tesla.
@@rogerstarkey5390 oh I see. Thanks! 👍
Watching an earlier review he stated that the rear windows are also double glazed which is not on the case on the model 3.. also you stated you like Michelin tyres as he does which is why he purchased the 20 inch wheels which come with Michelin as opposed to the 19 inch which are Hankook..😄
Indeed. Double glazed all round and Mich on the 20's. I'll be taking the 29's for ride quality.
No fixing point in the boot ?? good/items will be flying around. disappoint all boot have fixing point for cargo nets etc
Willy wallowy! Need to use this phrase from now on for everything! 😂😂😂😂
You can have that for free 🤣🤣🤣
I'm liking the Model Y abit more now, I'm wondering its its worth swapping in our Model 3 for one, as would suit us great for the family holidays and camping, mmmmmmm. Great video guys 😀🔌⚡
I’m the same. Didn’t really fancy it, saw it, loved it. The space inside in is immense.
@EV James and Kate think a test drive is needed 🤣 off this week so might pop to Trafford Centre to look at there's.
Just taken the plunge - went for the base model and a brand new one cost me £40,500!! They used to cost closer to £50+k - seamless buying experience, all online, pick up less than a week later. I was so close to opting for the MG4 long range but having a Y for only £7k more is a no brainer - it’s a better car, much bigger, feels better and has far, far better tech.
I considered the Dual Motor but the specs are identical in every other respect and it’s £8k more which is just not justified
First review I've seen that has not hammered it for hard suspension; it's a particular worry for us as my wife is disabled with a chronic back condition. Personal test drive is the only way to find out I suppose!
I think the wheels will be key. I have an M3P and the ride is awful, I found the Y much much better.
I hope Tesla decide to use a cassette roller blind parcel shelf and not a big lump of MDF.
The top of the line model X has never had parcel shelf, so I am not surprised not fitted to model Y
No parcel shelf would be a major issue - can’t really leave anything of any value in the main boot compartment
Maybe not an issue due to the privacy glass?
Rear door windows should also be double glazed. The larger rims come with Michelin tyres.
The rears are double glazed. Strange about the tyres, I’ve never known Tesla to fit anything other than Mich.
The performance Y is even BETTER!
Nice review!
Toss your soggy items in the front trunk (froot)... why would you put them in the back?
Otherwise, spot on review! Thx!
That's a good shout. Cheers
Got mine coming next week, chopped in my M3 LR back to Tesla for more than i paid 6 months and 7500 miles ago...
James, In seventy plus odd years, of driving, (yes, seventy) I've never yet "used" the rear shelf, so not really a loss!
For keeping things covered and out of sight and keeping wet stuff separated from the main cabin area.
@@Jamesandkate For dog owners this is a dream no need to instantly remove and it take up space for the day you sell it. Amazing!
Are rear windows double glazed as well?
Yes they are.
Big gap in the right headlight inner part compared to the left side @ 4:53 > 5:01
As an Ampera owner, what's a parcel shelf? :D
Rsymonds collected his on Friday from Southampton and on his video he said smaller wheels Hancook and larger Michelin - like you I prefer Michelin. Have Crossclimates on my Smart
Other than hiding what's in the boot does anyone use a parcel shelf for anything these days? When I was young I would put speakers there but that was it. Nice review as always. Not a car for me as a single guy. An affordable convertible EV is what I am waiting for, long wait I suspect.
I took the privacy cover (I don’t call it a parcel shelf - that’s reserved for the hard shelves in sedans where you could actually mount a speaker) out of my Outlander PHEV about a week after I got it and haven’t put it back in nearly 8 years. Just don’t see the point.
