Why doesn't CA invest in 'Super Scooper' aircraft for wildfires?

There is zero excuse for the state of California to not already have a half a dozen of these DeHavilland Super Scooper’s.
You clearly weren’t listening to the expert when he was talking. The helicopters are way more useful. Cal fire is working on converting more fixed wing aircraft up in Chico as we speak to help widen the fleet. We lease the aircraft when we need them.
@@christianhenry4324 The points mentioned are mute when we have 3 to 5 archers of burning fire spread per second. We need as much water as possible, and the amount the helicopters carry vs the super scooper are fractional. They are way more effective.
The helicopters are only more useful in the sierras, this is LA.
Except using saltwater near power lines is a big no-no. It’s more conductive and can over salt the soil, as well as contaminate rivers. LA should have had the reshoots filled, that’s where no excuse can be made. Even SF is prepared with their own auxiliary water supply.
@@christianhenry4324 They have 10 and LA has had a yearly lease for Quebec 1 and 2 since 1994. They park in LA in the fall every year, lease the planes and the crew. regardless if you need them
Super Scoopers are used in Europe with ocean water with great success. They rinse the systems with fresh water when they land, that's it. Subsequent forests regrowth is largely unaffected.
The Super Scoopers are not just an ocean scooping airplane, they work just fine on our lakes too like Pyramid, Castaic, Elsinore, Perris, Silverwood and Big Bear.
Yea, let’s not put our fires because it might harm plant life, makes perfect sense.
The flame retardants have never contained anything toxic.. 😂 🤣 😊
Rather harm plant life than human life. Idiots
Trees can grow in burnt land. Trees cannot grow in land where the water table is destroyed and replaced by salt water. also the pacific ocean isn’t always in the condition for landing in. These are most useful in calm fresh waters with at least 2 miles of straight water way. they have plenty of helicopters and other planes that drop water and retardant. Calm down.
Yes , those areas in the south of the U.S. that have tidal surges during hurricanes of salt water never recover .
Thus the well known deserts of Florida and Louisiana ..
If you’re worried about the after effects of salt water ask yourself what are the after effects of the red fire retardant!
You do realize the red fire retardant is just water with red dye right? They dye it red because it tells pilots where they’ve already hit.
@@emileblanche5868 This is incorrect, the retardant is known as Phos-Chek. Besides the iron oxide red coloring compound, it also includes ammonium polyphosphate, diammonium phosphate, diammonium sulfate, monoammonium phosphate, attapulgus clay, guar gum and other proprietary additives. None of the additives are known to be linked to cancer.
In Europe, red fire retardant is just water with red clay powder. It makes kind of a mud that covers any flammable material on the ground (dead leaves, small branches of dead wood etc.) and creates a barrier for fire spread, unless winds blow strong in the wrong direction.
In Canada, these are known as water bombers. Never heard super scooper until this fire.
All the fire planes are called water bombers .
Thus plane did not have to land to reload the water it flies above the water and scoops It in.
@@josephpadula2283 im from Canada, my town is surrounded by forests, and the next town is 250 km away. I have never heard of the CL215s (at the time) being called superscoopers. DeHavilland Canada, the company that builds them, does not call them superscoopers. They call them amphibious firefighting aircraft. Everyone else in Canada calls them water bombers.
@@rb239rtr
Ok thanks for the correction .
In Europe, we just call them « Canadair » and they are very popular. Southern European countries have an agreement to give each other help if needed with additional ones.
🏆Weakest excuse award 🏆
Cal-Fire.... "We do not want to burn/kill your grass and trees with salt water" while your house is on fire, Got It! 👍🏽
Québec is sending 2 more super scoopers today I heard on the morning news (in Montreal).
The report does not mention that the super scooper has the possibility to mix fire retardent foam to the water.
They do have foaming systems
So the drawback is salt water? WTF? Salt is being used for de-icing roads everywhere. Is it better to drop the more expensive red chemical then? If environment damage is such a concern, why would there be house in those hills in the first place? This state gov is really out of god damn mind.
Cl415 aka super scooper uses the retardent too it's mixed with the water yes fresh water would be best but tell that to the people cost to the fires watching itt approaching their houses they have to wait hours while planes are reloads from distance airfields or while helicopters travel to distance water beds
The water becomes less salty when you rent the plane. 😂
house is next to the ocean. but theres NO water to put them FIRE out. WHAT!!!!?
To the writer of the headline (tagline) the plural of aircraft is aircraft... not aircrafts.
Great aircraft, they use fresh water just as well!
If you’re going to buy one,
do it before Chumps adds 25% to the cost!
Seriously, good luck with the fires!
They can also perfectly scoop from artificial lakes, wide rivers, etc.
this total BS arguments
In Canada, we have lakes everywhere to fight forest fires. But California should invest in a couple of these aircraft if it can't contain these fires just to save property and lives. Salinity be damned.
In Europe we mostly use sea water with ours.
There's almost a 6 year backlog of aircraft already on viking aircrafts order books😢
We need these planes in the summer and you need them in the winter in California. We could lease more of these and more helicopters too, again in Canada we need them in summer. So its a win win situation already. We build these planes too. But they will all cost 25% more in a few days with the new Trump economy. You cannot fix stupid
NIH: Not Invented Here
they havent built them for 10 years ... but Ive been yelling that governments outside of Canada need to invest in the new 515 to get production up a fast as possable because they are the best & the world needs them bigger ... better & they are having to source money to get production running
Bullshit. Greece just bought $500 million worth!
@@eco8842 Bombardier did shut down CL-415 production a while back but then Bombardier sold the rights of the aircraft to a new company called De Havilland which is upgrading the aircraft and going to start production again. The upgraded version will be called the 515. America needs to buy at least a dozen of these aircraft.
@@ashleyhansen6150many European countries have ordered them already.
We already bought several. Where are they?
Ukrain
@InTheYearThere’s a lie.
They are in Arizona
@@billsmith5109
We already know for certain L.A. county sent equipment to Ukraine, it's not a leap to figure that's where our super scoopers went as well. You Marxists are really scrambling to cover up. It's too late. Everyone sees.
@InTheYear There has been no transfer of firefighting aircraft to Ukraine.
Why don’t they instead of wasting money on other crap.
Now CA must buy 25% more expensive
No money for useless Super Scoopers - the CA emperor is using billions to battle Trump
Your orange troll wants to increase $ of them by 25% ….
Orange agent detected…
Buy more planes ✈️
If Cal Fire bought DHC 515’s these same folks would be saying why not more Firehawk helicopters.
It’s a matter of firefighting tactics and how much you can drop per hour.
An helicopter is much slower than a Canadair and carries less water on each pass. It’s mainly for single point dropping.
Retardant is not meant to extinguish fire, but to be dropped on a fire’s unburnt side line to create a wet barrier that the fire won’t go past. This only works if wind is either quiet or blowing towards the already burnt area. Otherwise, embers will be blown past the wet line…
Water droppings can extinguish a moderate fire or blow up higher flames.
There’s no soil fertility issue afterwards, as can be seen in Europe on the Mediterranean coastline where dense vegetation grows again in a matter of a few years only.
On a national scale, the US should have a variety of aerial assets available to make the best combined use of each depending on each situation’s needs.
Because CA needs money for sanctuary city. What a stupid question.
One of the dumbest videos I’ve ever watched
Where is our 747 fire fighting plane?
It was retired. A 747 requires a lot of money to maintain and requires a big runway. Most fires are not near a massive runway, so it makes more sense to use many smaller planes for similar cost.
To the reporter: Ditch the fake eyelashes.
CL 415 firefighting aircraft are expensive to purchase and operate. They are warm weather aircraft only. These aircraft would be sitting around parked and winterized in Canada waiting for wildfire season to come in the spring (formerly summer before climate change). Instead they are being put to good use in southern California in the Canadian "off-season." More are available for lease and operation from Canadian provinces if needed. Likewise for the helicopters on lease from British Columbia from Coulson Aviation. Helicopters have their advantages for firefighting in the mountains of British Columbia and elsewhere. Pilots are not sitting around but maintaining proficiency. It is a win-win situation costwise for Canada and the United States.
Hahhahaha wth are you listening to yourself? California has warm weather year around.. so it makes more sense for California to have their own.
Those are Bombardier CL-415 aircraft. DeHavilland hasn't built a single one yet... They "scooped" the rights to restart production. Ther's no factory yet or chain of supply.
Just like my mother who rents a phone from Bell for 30 years at $10 a month.
In 2008 during the financial crisis , these planes were on sale in Canada. If I remember correctly some were sold in Europe for 8 million each. At the time I thought we should be buying them all and offering bonuses for retired A10 thunderbolt pilots to fly them.
Anyone know what the price to pick up one today?
Greece in 2023 purchased 7 new De Havilland Canada DHC-515 waterbombers for CAN 563 million. . . So about CAN 80 million each. In 2024, the European Union (EU) agreed to purchase 22 De Havilland Canada DHC-515 waterbombers for around CAN $79 million each.
30-37 million when I checked last week.
Because it's all on purpose
It's political. Pure and simple. Why doesn't Europe do like US? Adapt aircraft?
Because cl415 in formation is faster at putting fires out.
How long does it take to fill a dc-10? Hercules?
They're not made anymore.
California hasn’t figured out the pronouns for these super scoopers, can’t get the carts ahead of the horses 🐎 🤣
..because it goes against the plan ..
Mr Trump happy to get Canada’s help but maybe Canada should send the US an invoice for the brave services of Canadian fire fighters !
Invoice for what? It’s called mutual aid..
they are using salt water....my goodness....I don't understand why our American cousins always turn it into politics....
TRUMP will end the lease n take them by force in 2025 .
Corruption....
