Thank you for a much detailed video on the various installations. Your videos are free of silly and unnecessary humour, unlike many others, you were very clear, informative and most importantly, you did not edit the process to shortcut nor shortfall on the techniques being demonstrated i.e. you did not rush anything. Much appreciate your knowledge and patience. Hats off to your videographer too. Keep it up.
Best video for accessories! Assumes u know nothing...that’s me. Just installed two pad eyes and handles! Also like that he has a split open kayak so you can see what the rivet is doing inside the kayak. Straightforward information!! Note: handle instructions is the 3rd video. 13/64 bit
Excellent tutorial video! It explains clearly, concisely and in good detail. I have just bought a kayak and going to start doing some kayak fishing. This is an indispensable video to me. I have learnt a lot from it. Thank you ACK!
This is a great video! I learned a lot more than I knew about the types of hardware to use when thinking about mounting anything on my kayak. I guess the only thing not mentioned, which may be assumed or left out on purpose, is the application of any silicone or water-proofing application to further seal those holes. Great job!
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent video! I'm still fairly new to Kayaking and this really helped me understand how to make attachments with my SOT. Top notch tutorial and company, as well!
I didn't need help with fasteners but your video gave me some great ideas for mods on my diy fishing kayak. Great video tho, thanks for taking the time! I liked and subscribed.
I have NEVER used any of these options. My yak has no access areas in the hull. COMPLETELY SEALED, Jackson Bite. I have only used stainless oval head screws in every one of my applications of course with a dab of silicone which I didn't see him use at all. Basically we get to spend over an hour watching him do the same thing over and over and over again. Great video!
Outstanding video regarding accessories installation. I am just wondering if you may have a video made on how to install a Rudder with Stainless Steel Well nuts to a Kayak with no Rudder. We all will appreciate your help. Thank you for your video and may God Bless You!
You did a very good job on the video and I appreciate the tip on breaking off the stem when pop riveting in plastic so as not to damage the kayak by pulling the compressed rivet through the hole. I normally rivet in metal and would have-not thinking-popped the stem off when the gun did so. Just a few "nit picky" things-they are screws-not bolts, pulleys not flywheels-but I still give you an "A" for a very methodical, well explained video.
Best vid I've found. Planning on doing most of what you did, so this vid helps a lot. There's not a lot of talking and setting up like most of the vids on RUclips. Couple of questions: I plan on using rivets. Is there a special type of rivot? Any silicone needed? I know it's an old vid but i learned a lot. thanks
for rod holder make a straight line from top to bottom diagonally and do same for other side, this will make an "X" pattern, which will give you dead center where to drill your hole. I suggest a marine silicon sealant on the bottom of piece you are adding, to issue watertight
Thanks for this . I ordered Tri fold revits due to my 3Waters Big Fish 120 has no opening to the inside of the kayak. Have a Anchor Wizard which I wish to use padeyes with Tri fold revits
Just got a viking profish reload. Wanting to put a silva 70p compass in the centre of the tackle pod where you would normally put a fish finder. Any ideas how to do that. I notice the touring kayaks with compass mounts have a large dome shaped inwards to mount it.
I did not have any luck with well nuts, although the screws may not have been long enough. I bought a cheap rivet gun and waterproof rivets and it has been the best thing for me. Cheap and super easy! Get one and you will regret it.
Good video. Lots of good info. That said, the install of the Scotty flush mount left some room for error since both the sharpie trace and the drill center were "eyeballed". Somebody who is not as skilled/practiced might drill the hole off center using this method. I would suggest that the novice installer flip the mount upside down and mark the 4 screw holes with a pencil. Then draw a pair of lines diagonally from mark to mark. The center mark for the drill is where the lines intersect.
If you would take small bites on that rivet gun, you could then pop the rivet shaft as intended. That little extra squeeze seats the rivet firmly. But I'll give your skills a B+
Great Tutorial Video (with the exception of not being "CC" for us hard of hearing people out here!). After watching this, I feel confident to mount my rod holders, Lowrance 7" Triple Shot, and Anchor Trolley on my Titan. (Who would've known that you're NOT supposed to tighten-up those "Special-Type" Rivets, until they break on their own? I surely DIDN'T...!) Thanks again for the instructional video...
This is a great video, very helpful! I have a question: I purchased a zig zag cleat to install on my Hobie Pro Angler 14. Can I use well nuts to secure the cleat to my kayak? If so, do you know what size bolts and well nuts are best or needed?
Well I don't have many accessories on the yak but it is a Splash II made by Crescent kayaks I believe it weighs 66lbs but maybe more like 70lbs with deck rigging, eyes, hooks, water and paddles. I plan on using four 3prong marine rivets to install the handle I just would hate for it to rip/rip out of a 70lb kayak after just a few uses. Also does the handle really make it easier to carry as you can already carry it awkwardly from where your legs would go. Doesn't seem that a handle would make it easier except for grip. I was considering installing a handle on both front and back it place of the paracord handles some SOT's come with. Thank for your time!!
+andrew louderback It sounds to me like this would be fine. We use marine rivets to install handles all the time. If you want a stronger hold though you can use Well nuts. They do require a larger hole however. www.austinkayak.com/products/263/Stainless-Steel-Bolt-10.html www.austinkayak.com/products/1096/Well-Nut.html
We have a very rocky shoreline in South Africa, bought myself a new kayak and want to install a thin stainless steel keelstrip to protect my new investment. What would the best method be for fixing it to the keel and can I use some sort of sealant to make sure the seal at the holes are 100% secure and watertight? It seems like no adhesive will stick to this plastic.
Thank u. I think I’ll use well nu ts and rivets exclusively, and forget about nuts and bolts! Wonder if these well nuts are widely available, like Lowes, or Home Depot, or wal mart
So, if you use bolts and nylon washers you don't need to use any sealant? The anchor system I got recommends using waterproof silicone on any holes that don't use a well nut. Any suggestions on a type/brand of sealant or do I even need any if I use nuts and bolts?
You said a 1" wellnut would be better for anchor trolley systems, but during the install you used a 5/8 wellnut to install the pulley. Can you please explain?
Great video, thank you so much for making it. Just a note, using your method for removing the stem on the rivets is based on the rivet type you sell at Austin Kayaks? Most marine tri-rivets I've used cannot remove the stem easily with a side to side method.
Now we need how to fix all screw holes. I have one of the Pelican Bass boats, and even after removing screws and filling holes with silicone, it leaks, collecting water inside.
More than likely stainless screws would be sufficient and A LOT LESS WORK! You are mounting accessories to plastic that is about a 1/4 inch thick. There isn't a lot of force happening with Scotty mounts and Railblaza accessories. I have NEVER used well-nuts or rivets or nutz and boltz! The main reason is I have a Jackson Bite and there are NO access hatches to get backing hardware inside of the hull. Hatches? We don't need no stinkin hatches!
Most rivet tools cut the rivet automatically just keep cranking until done. Not necessary to pull off and rocking to break rivet! Drilling the rivets is much easier and safe way to remove them.
What kind of rivet gun did you use? I tried three different types and none of them worked. The rivet would not catch. I bought the rivets of the ACK site. Very frustrating as you make it look so easy, but really an inconvenience.
Dude! Seriously? You are mounting plastic to plastic! There is just not that much stress on these installs. The only one I would want to use backing on would be carrying handles but I don't carry my yak because it weighs over a hundred pounds AND I have a trailer. I unload and load it from the water like any other boat. I got yer jack-nut right here! :)
Hey Mang Mang- Great question! Typically we recommend using a KC Welder or Silicon. Let us know if you have any further questions, we are glad to offer any advice!
Are there any solutions for patching holes drilled out for well nuts? I didn't like the placement on my anchor trolley and now I'm not sure how to go about it.
+Wallace Sweeney III If you're close to one of our shops, stop in and we'd be happy to help! If not, I suggest using something like thiswww.austinkayak.com/products/1587/KC-Welder-Pro-with-Hobie-Color-Rod-Stock.html to do the job. If you call our customer service team at 888-828-3828 they'd be happy to walk you through the process!
+andrew louderback Without knowing specifics of your setup, it's hard to say for sure, however the webbing is really strong though so you shouldn't have any issues. It would depend on the structure of the kayak at the installation point or the hardware used to do the install. Overall, the webbing shouldn't fail, but if you have more concerns or want to go over details - I'm happy to do so! Just need a little more info from you :)
why in the world would you use a rivet rather then a stainless bolt with a lock nut on it and some washers? that rivet only ends up being maybe a quarter inch side inside the kayak. Also if you dont have access inside the kayak then a toggle bolt would provide far more holding force then a rivet would in plastic
Another tip... before drilling, tap the drilling point (where you marked it with the sharpie) with a nail or other sharp object to give the drill place to rest in as you start to drill. It will prevent the bit from "walking" as was seen done more than once in this video. It made me cringe every time. Nothing messes up a good installation by having your holes not be exactly where you wanted them to be. A sharpie will not make sure your hole is in the right place if your drill bit walks when you start to drill the hole.
If you can't see the inside of the hull, how do you determine what length of well nut to use? I see you have 5/8" and 1" nuts, but these also come in many other sizes.
Hi Shawn. If you aren't able to see the exact length you'll need, go with a 1" well nut. Typically most installation points are not thicker than 1", so it make sure you're covered.
I am no expert or I would not be watching the video. That said, it is hard to believe that silicone should not be applied under EACH accessory. Not overly thick, sufficient to 'seal' each new hole.
You are not using the rivet gun correctly when it snugs up at the very end you squeeze and the rivet gun cuts the rivet that way you know it's on tight
Thank you for a much detailed video on the various installations. Your videos are free of silly and unnecessary humour, unlike many others, you were very clear, informative and most importantly, you did not edit the process to shortcut nor shortfall on the techniques being demonstrated i.e. you did not rush anything. Best kayak accessory tutorial on RUclips.

Excellent instructions. I appreciate seeing what the rivet does inside the kayak. Thanks for sharing this.
One of the most comprehensive and informative videos on kayak accessory installation on RUclips that I have seen. Thx for taking the time to make it.
This video could not be any more perfect. Thank you

I agree I think best to put some water proof product under the fitting to stop water ingress.

Welding all the holes shut would be a great repair video! :)
Great video one the the best installation videos on the internet.
This video tutorial is superbly useful thank you so very much for each demonstration. Very clear, step by step tutorial, that covers many options.
Rivets are so satisfying dude
As redundant as the methods seem, this is a GREAT vid for anyone trying to install accessories!!!
Right "anyone trying to install accessories" who has never installed ANYTHING IN THEIR LIFE!
Finally found this. So very helpful, as I was not doing this correct in prior boat installs of accessories. Thanks and good work.
Extremely helpful tutorial, well done!!
Incredibly helpful! Thanks so much ACK.
Of course, that's what we're here for!
Great video, exactly what I was looking for. Thank-you and great shirt.
First, Go Big Red! Second, thanks this was a great tutorial. I get nervous every time I take a drill to my Yak

Excellent informative clip. The presented is a good communicator. Well done.
Very good and Detailed. Thanks
I saw the intro, so to start I went ahead and cut my kayak in half. Can you do a video on how to wield your kayak back together?
Good One
ROFL!

Great video. Very informative, helpful, and details very well explained. Great educational video, Thank you.
Thin drill bit works great for removing rivets.
Hi, with regard to the rod holder installation, it would be helpful to mention the orientation of the rod holder, before being riveted. Good video!
Thank you I have been wondering about that. Awesome
Best vid I've found. Planning on doing most of what you did, so this vid helps a lot. There's not a lot of talking and setting up like most of the vids on RUclips.
Couple of questions: I plan on using rivets. Is there a special type of rivot?
Any silicone needed?
I know it's an old vid but i learned a lot. thanks
Very good video, well done
Awesome video - great demo
How much weight can a rivet hold vs a 5/8" well nut vs a 1" well nut? Which one is strongest and least likely to pull out?
He's too good to answer any questions...
I have used stainless oval head screws with ALL of my applications without any issue. This is a classic case of overengineering!
@doctorkayak5306 he answered other people's question. There are over a hundred posts on an 8yo video.... not easy to keep up with.

"Dixon long reach marker" that way you can mark exact hole locations through a narrow deep hole. also useful for dozens of other projects!
Or just run a drill bit through the hole and forget about the unnecessary steps.

TOTALLY AGREE!
I was wondering what was going on. I thought maybe they were some special boat rivet that didn't work like others.
Seems like I have no reason to have you guys install anything now. Great info thanks!

Will POM rivets work for these applications?

Since your drilling holes into the kayak, are these rivets waterproof? Does anybody know? I would like to know before I start drilling into my kayak.

Why are we using rivets and flat style bolts with a chamfered pad eye? Shouldn’t we be using a proper flat pad eye?
Can you use a regular rivet for pad eyes? I didn’t get the tri-grip variety and it’s kinda last minute
What kind of rivet gun did you use? I tried three different types and none of them worked. The rivet would not catch. I bought the rivets of the ACK site. Very frustrating as you make it look so easy, but really an inconvenience.
I'm curious. Why don't you use stainless steel jacknuts or some other kind of rivet nuts instead of much weaker pop rivets or well nuts?

Why was that Kayak sawed in half ?
We'll sometimes cut up damaged kayaks to make them easier to dispose of.
what size rivets are those
i'm 16 min in and still no mention the length or diameter of the rivets:/

No silicone o-rings on the rivets?
