  • Noob D&D Dad - Giant Spider Battle! - Gross! My son's D&D game has found itself stuck inside of a big castle called Axeholm. I accidentally let them choose this quest even though they were not ready for it.
One spider death I forgot to mention in the video was when my son Ray of Frosted a spider for the killing blow and it was backing up to get away and it's whole body froze solid but it still had the backward momentum and so it fell down and shattered all over the place. My friend picked up a piece of it to investigate and I had him roll a d100. He got like a 45 so I just had it be a frozen spider chunk. I was thinking if he rolled a 100 I would randomly have a gem stuck in it for no reason at all :)
I would LOVE to hear any and all comments, feedback, suggestions, your stories, and guidance! THANKS FOR WATCHING!
This is a bit of a recap, largely from session number 9, of my son's d&d campaign in the Axeholm quest from The Dragon of Icespire Peak in the D&D Essentials kit. I do recap a little bit of session 6,7,8, to get the context of where they are. My intent is to recap in further detail the earlier sessions if there is a demand to hear them. (speak up if you'd like that! Thanks!).
noob dm, doob d&d dm, noob d&d dad dm, dad dm for kids, dad dungeon master, dungeon master dad, can kids play d&d? can kids play dungeons & dragons?

All magic party! Thats wild, but I can see it being really fun as a magic duo. I also did the sling thing with my Ranger in my wife's campaign--I was very proud of that. Kinda wanted a grizzled Trench-running sapper veteran and was like, no way is she gonna let go of that crossbow to work, she'd have it on a sling! Going into a place that's a bit above your level can be tricky for both players and DM. Getting a +1 Crossbow with silvered ammo is a great treasure find, especially for mages who can't rely on a fighter or paladin to get between them and the bad guys.

The all magic has been fun. They also have some melee npcs with them currently. Thanks for all your comments!

The story of the spider battle is quite funny for me, because the last campaign I ran, the party came across an old ruined tower. They were determined that it must have been a wizard's tower and there would be good treasure in there. This was session 1! They're level 1!
They enter the tower and are attacked by 2 giant spiders! Party of 6 almost died! They retreat when I say there are more in the ruined tower coming! They take a short rest and recover then go BACK!? This time there are 3 giant spiders, multiple characters went down, one of them was dragged back into the tower! The remaining party had to quickly recover and try to rescue him! They defeated the last wounded spider and saved him, but it was a crazy day. Specially when a spider crit biting him and the poison would have killed him, then we realized that he had poison resistance and was only down. Not dead.

I love the energy and excitement! I’ve been playing since 1985 and I remember that newness so well!
When I played this one as a gnome wizard we encountered the dragon right off at level one. We got it the first roll. 😂

I enjoy so much the joy you are getting from Dming. so great to see the fun you are having. The way I play crossbows is if you want to load and fire a crossbow up to light is you use your move to load. So yes you can fire each turn you just can not move. With Heavy crossbow because In the real world you need a crank. Fire miss a turn reloading then fire again. Hand crossbow.. Rule of cool, your can move and fire BUT dex check to see if you can load it! Crit fail make it a really cool mess up ..mahahaha

Magic item dispersal is entirely up to you, how powerful you want to see your players. As a player its always fun to get a magic item, but if every other session they get something super powerful then they wont appreciate what they already have; i personally run light on magic items, they will show up occasionally, but when they do, they're usually very fancy and have narratives attached along with cool names. I ran a campaign that was level 6 when we finished. I only gave them 2 magic items the whole playthrough, but it was "The Blade of Wrath" a blue green scimitar that could call lightning or compel duels, along with like 3 other spells (limited charges) and "The Staff of the Cosmos" a staff that granted the wielder abilities like moonbeam, invisibility or even conjuring some otherworldly beings. Point is, do what you think will make the game the most fun. But I think more powerful less often is the way to go.

I usually go the opposite direction as this advice. I find common and uncommon magic items that will encourage creativity. The immovable rod is fun for creative players and doesn't break the game at low levels. And ever burning torch or some other eternal light source makes light a bit easier for my non dark vision guys. Simple things like that.
But in a game winning lots of magic I'll make sure the martial find magic weapons. And those are usually something cool and epic and level with the martials.

@jeremiahpohl3596 my hooligans used it as an e-brake on a pirate ship. They had been locked in their cabin and held hostage. No one thought to take their stuff. So they bored a hole into the frame of the ship and wedged the thing in. I told them it would only work to slow the ship a moment as the ships force was over the weight. They said ok and 1 guy keep spamming the switch every round bringing the ship to a halt, while the rest were fighting for their lives. Such a fun toy.

👏👏 Doing well Noob D&D Dad, even with the few mistakes you know you've made and adjusted for it.
Always be wary of a TPK, it can happen and it's going to happen, sometime.
Don't be too soft. If your players believe they are invincible they will do silly things more often.
If you do happen to incapacitate a character down to 0 hit points here's what I do instead of the unconscious death save rule. On the characters turn they can crawl up to 10 ft, say a few words but that's it no actions, no abilities and then they make a death saving throw and if they succeed, as well as marking down a success, they stay semi conscious till their next turn, if they fail they pass into unconsciousness as well as marking down a fail. With this at least for one round they still can have some small input.
As for the crossbow question instead of getting them a repeating crossbow you could change the rule that for the light and hand crossbow it costs a bonus action to load, but the heavy crossbow remains a full round action to load.
Now that they are 4 level they have access to their first feats instead of the +2 ability upgrade, and in the feats there is Crossbow Expert which grants anyone proficient with crossbows free loading.
    .
. As for magic don't be too free with magic items.
A potion every now and again is always exciting to get and especially easy to plant if they are requiring a certain type ie. Healing. But since they are all at level 4 they should be acquiring plus one weapons or armour of some kind.
Keep up the good work looking forward to seeing more.
    👍🏼

LOADING RULES. you can load and fire once every turn. If you take the attack action this includes loading and firing. At level 5 some classes can make two weapon attacks with their Attack Action. This is where the restriction comes in.
E.g. A level 5 ranger with a long sword takes the attack action and can make two sword attack rolls. If the same ranger is using a crossbow they can only make one attack roll.
The feat Crossbow Expert allows a character with extra attack to ignore the loading time so they can fire twice with their attack action. (As well as having other benefits)
Now ballistas are large mechanical crossbows (siege weapons) which may take an action to load and a separate action to fire. If so this can only be fired every other turn or requires a second person to use their action to load it.

i want to play in your group! dispersal of magic items used to be part of the stat block for creatures. i prefer to keep it organic to the situation: the spiders have likely killed other adventurers and magic items would be found among their desiccated corpses. but a wandering monster would not have as many as would be found in its lair.

At lower levels, single/limited use magic items are great. But if you don't give enough, though, they hoard them for really dire situations! So if you want to give scrolls and potions and actually see them used, be a bit liberal.
I also like to make sure that around lvl 5 to 7, each player gets one permanent magic item that directly relates to their "shtick".
If you want a bit more, starting at lvl 3, trickle some other weird/utility magic items in to see what they do with them! For example, cape of the montebanc (or something like that) is only one misty step per long rest, but it oozes style!
I love you sharing this with us, thanks! ❤

Not sure but I believe if you are proficient in the crossbow you don’t have to load it. But if you’re not you do. Not sure though. As for the magic items, I’d say let the pace of the campaign and encounters delegate. Like you are now.

about your spider encounter, I wanted to tell you about a book called "The Monsters Know What They're Doing"", by Keith Ammann. It's a compendium of a lot of DnD monsters that talks about their ecology, and how they'd act in and outside combat in relation to that ecology. It helped me a lot making it so hat each creature feels distinct and behaves in a unique way, making it so that you can even have NPC's or quests give information about how these creatures behave, kinda like in The Witcher 3, where you gotta prepare and gather information before goin against powerful monsters.
Once again, tons of love for you

I believe you are correct on the Crossbows, there is an ability/feat called 'Crossbow Expert' that reduces it to a bonus action (I think)... but honestly, it comes down to what is fun for your group, in my groups "Rule of cool" usually outweighs "rules as written"...
Loving this journey, and as a veteran Dungeon Master, I am following these adventures with great interest and joy!

Hey so you don't need to spend an action to load a crossbow. Some classes will get a feature called 'Extra Attack' which means they can attack an extra time when using the Attack action. 'Loading' just means that you can only ever get one attack per action/bonus action/reaction, regardless of whether you have something like Extra Attack.

If you wanted to give them an upgraded crossbow that ignores the loading property you could give them a chance to revisit gnomengarde and have one of the Artificers there create a repeating shot infusion (a feature of the player class Artificer from the sourcebook: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything).
