    According to IMDb, this episode of Reading Rainbow aired in 1988. Burton's directorial debut was TNG's season 6 episode, Second Chances, in 1993. Seeing him sitting with the editors, I can't help but wonder if, even then, he was thinking about expanding into directing?

    I learned so so much in this episode. Mind blowing to think the Enterprise was upside down and that glitter was used for the transporter! Amazing. Thank you Waz!

    You know what's crazy? Just last week I was at a friends house and we got to talking about Reading Rainbow and this episode came up. We then proceeded to watch the clipped version on youtube because we both had memories of watching it in school. At the end we both joked "What did any of this have to do with reading? This is just LeVar Burton showing off his evening job."
    Always enjoyed behind the scenes shows. Probably from my love of a 90s tv series called Movie Magic.
    Speaking of that series. On youtube they have one of the episodes that deal with DS9.

      Omg, it really is LeVar showing off his evening job.
      Wishbone had nice behind the scenes segments as well that I also enjoyed.
      I might have to look up DS9 Movie Magic. I know I found some of the DS9 DVD special features interesting.

    I remember when this episode aired. I watched it with my dad, who is a huge Treckie and got me into the show as well. Back then it was hard to find a lot of behind the scenes stuff, so this was fun for both of us.

    Don't forget, there are Star Trek novels as well. 😉 Many of which are also audio books, are on RUclips and read by the cast sometimes.

    In elementary school, they used to have us watch Reading Rainbow during our class library period (ironic indeed). As a very young Trek fan I kept daydreaming throughout, “I really wish we watching TNG instead.” True story.

    Funny you make this video, that's a "behind the scenes" episode about Star Trek TNG. Just 2 week ago, Red Letter Media had a video recounting the many, many, many visible errors made on the sets. Particularly on the bridge, with visible boom mics, tiny white dots on the floor for the actor's marks, black paper put over the reflective screens to reduce glare. Just a load of stuff. Not noticed much until it was made HD.

      Actors and actresses have feared that with HD, their wrinkles and blemishes, even with make up, would show through, where as before, it could not be (as easily) seen

  • @arran6255
    @arran6255 7 месяцев назад +1

    I'll never understand why they lined the back wall with a computer screen finished with some weird super reflective acrylic that forced them to cover it with black paper for the entire run of the show to stop showing off the studio lights, mics and other studio gear- and they still messed that up countless times.

    I used to watch Reading Rainbow all the time when I was a kid. It was on PBS at the time and they were really good about airing episodes that were more than a year or two old, so I caught this episode in reruns in like 1992, 1991 at the earliest. And it blindsided me because I wasn't expecting to see Star Trek: The Next Generation be the subject of an episode. So that was very entertaining for me. It only happened because the 1988 Writer's Strike was happening, so there was a huge delay in starting the production of season 2. This episode was filmed not long before the changes made to the Enterprise sets for season 2 were done, so this was the last time the season 1 Enterprise-D Bridge was seen in its original form ("All Good Things..." had slight differences to the Bridge set for the scenes set during "Encounter at Farpoint"). Thanks for covering this episode Janelle, I really appreciate it.

    The editing process was done all on beta, the film was scanned into beta and edited from there. And they didn't have the greatest archival system, so most of the budget for the HD remaster was going through old cans of film, many of which were not in great shape. They did the same for voyager and DS9. If they had a film master copy they would have released remasters for both series years ago. Because they weren't that great at archiving the original film we're at the point where if they don't do something soon, Voyager and DS9 will be lost to time. As you probably know.

    • @okankyoto
      @okankyoto 6 месяцев назад

      One of the big reasons we're not seeing HD remasters of DS9 and Voyager is that TNG required all those scans, and then the episodes to be re-edited to match the originals from those new scans. Then because all the effects were done on beta tapes, they had to re-find all the effects elements and remake the original shots. Because TNG was mostly models, the amount of new CG from scratch was minimal, but with DS9 and VOY the amount of CG (from companies who are lost to time now) would be even more expensive to do.
      I still hope they do it someday. (Hell I'm down to work on it when it happens...)

    • @claytonberg721
      @claytonberg721 6 месяцев назад

      @@okankyotoThe original film stock is degrading, that's why the HD TNG release sometimes goes from full HD to fuzzy low res, the original film stock was either lost or degraded beyond repair.
      The time to save DS9 and VOY is now, or it will be lost forever. Obviously the beta tapes survive on but material is considered lost when it's original medium is gone. It might even be too late now.
