"Keep my iwi out yo mouth!"
      - local Maori politicians response when asked about gangs.
Nothing will happen, the gangs are too closely linked to Maori who are in positions of power.
Hell they even get MPs turning up at their patching ceremonies.

The point is? The ACT MP that presented a briefing about gun law mentioned one of Labour's laws was effective around guns. Only 30 people had the highly restrictive law imposed on them. Once the law is amended to increase the criteria may up to 100 will have an order imposed. So you can see out of 5 plus million people only a few are headaches. Even 8,000 out of 5.7 m is small.

Fifteen years on there are no gangs in New Zealand. The sole gangs which were here and now decreasing due to proliferation of the dairy industry are shearing gangs.
Every other group is a highly organised club with rules, kinship bonds, family members, children, aunts, uncles and grandchildren. The genesis of clubs in New Zealand is well researched. Our Pacific Atoll is merely reaping the benefits of decades of consciously planned policies created to destroy families/communities, marginalise and abrogate basic human rights. Club members in this country are parents, partners, commuity advocates and fundamentally leaders. Patches or no patches are not the issue. The issue is whether the narrow minded vitriolic paternalism of yesteryear is going to be permitted to persist in a highly advanced technologically underwritten village which is part of a global society, more needy today of fortitude, creativity and vision, leadership. Successive governments have locked up leadership. Their investment has now produced present and future dividends. Club members no longer seek to hide their faces or accept being treated as 'less' than human. They seek to impart, share, create, weave and lead. I wish NZ would halt pollution with dairy units and return to more gangs.....shearing sheep.

This entire mode of thinking is inexcusably autocratic. As a busker I'm faced with all manner of people and situations. Never once has anyone with a gang jacket ever given me a sense of menace or intimidation. Quite the opposite. They've all been courteous and generous. When interacting I find a common humanity and greater understanding of the human condition. Rather than a clamping down on the symbolism why isnt the government focus on how disenfranchisement leads people to making this choice to begin with? Gang members are formed not born. It seems like a dog and pony political show. They're picking low hanging fruit to send a message to the rest of us. At a given point those engaging in the enforcement of over reactive autocrats will have YOU in their crosshairs. Then when cattle car doors slam shut on you it will be far, far too late.
