He's in quarantine for a few months so it'll be awhile before he gets to meet any of the other animals. Until then, he'll get lots of attention from the humans :)

He's being raised by humans not that that's a bad thing I was raised by humans to. Is the vet going to give him some kind of probiotic to help him digest his food?
Grubby aye aye Beavers have gut bacteria that break down (ferment) the wood for them indeed. They however get these bacteria naturally from just eating leaves and the trees themselves. So a diet of pellets, fresh produce and selected wood should be sufficient. And it is technically not the bark they get most of the nutrition from but the layer that is right underneath it, the sweet cambrium. Which transports all the sap of the tree. Not a bad survival snack for humans too! if boiled or baked beforhand, does not taste all that bad and I speak from experience. ;)

Or does the mother act differently towards him? Or is it just because he needs special treatment due to his condition? The best of luck to him and you with this challenge! :)

The sweet smell is probably castoreum. It is used in perfumes and foods. I nominate the name Benny as a name for some unknown reason. I can't wait to get updates. Thanks!
I think timbit would be a cool name! Timbits are what donut holes are called at Tim Hortons (a popular canadian coffee shop) and since the beaver is the national animal of Canada it would be fitting for this little cutie! :)

His name is Huckleberry, he’s named after Huckleberry Finn and Huckleberry Hound. But, he’s all grownup and he used to be little, but now he knows how to chop down trees with his teeth to cut and timber some trees to make a beaver dam to protect it from predators such as a wolf and a grizzly bear to attack it. I wished I could take care of a baby beaver and once I take care of it and help him grow, then I’ll let him go out to a wildlife to make a beaver dam of his own.

And will that damage be healed over time, or will he always have special needs?
Neurological damage can mean basically anything, since brains control everything. It might be something quite mild or serious, but this beaver pup seems to be responsive and active enough, that the neurological damage isn't probably from the worst end of the spectrum.
... 😟 .. sometimes I get baby blackies, thrushs & starlings with 'brain/head malfunctions'... nothin ye can do, but appreciate the moments with them. They have no future & ye can't fight nature. 😶 beautiful as it is

Love these guys, what a fantastic organization! Unfortunate there is so much wildlife being harmed by industry etc. I wish corporations would leave beaver dams intact! When generational beaver dams are destroyed, the beavers must start anew. With these newer dams there is a greater risk of heavy metals accumulating. Methyl mercury is formed and causes severe neurological damage. We’ve all heard the saying mad as a hatter.. well the madness was caused due to the Mercury involved in the manufacturing of hats. The old dams are somehow impervious to the toxic runoff.

From what I know they chew on wood to make sure their teeth don't grow too long and for building materials, not for nutrition
