    Vladimir Putin has cleared the way to remain President till 2036. From being Lt-Colonel in the KGB to becoming either the new Stalin or Peter the Great, albeit with an original, anti-Communist ideology of his own. In episode 512 of ThePrint's #CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta talks about how Russia punches way above its weight and how Putin made it third most powerful country in the world.

    Economy is not worsening in Russia. Russia has one of the lowest debt to GDP ratio. This explains the stagnant growth of economy. Moreover they have been acumulating gold over years.

Till someone actually visits that country and have only watched Western coverage of Russia, you will not realize why President Putin is required for that country. Yes. Shekhar Gupta’s analysis is shallow and gossipy. Time and again. 3/4th of his presentation revolved around Putin’s tactics of retaining power, while this could have been covered in few minutes. What is important is how Russia has continued the strategic legacy of Soviet Union in supporting and meddling in the traditional allies of the Soviet Union. Putin has pretty much maintained the support base of Soviet Union, and has of late guarded it against American aggression ( eg Syria, Cuba and Venezuela). Shekar Gupta quotes one statement Putin made on communism as an evidence against his stance against communism. Putin may not be a communist by his deeds, but by his actions and his patronage he is surely a Stalinist ( and an admirer of Stalin). Soviet communism is nothing but Stalinism. Totalitarianism is its characteristics. Putin is very much a Stalinist. He carries on the legacy of the Soviet power structure. That’s why he had interfered in all the places where Soviet Union would have interfered had it existed now. Russia under Putin also follows the Soviet military doctrine. Of developing strong defence system that is almost invincible. S600 missile shield is the finest exposition of the Soviet defence doctrine. Shekhar Gupta spoke without telling anything. As always he is just superficial and gossipy

      @TheLocalLt 4 года назад +5

      abcxyz1881 Putin has nothing to do with Stalinism he uses Stalin’s image to improve his own image, much like Stalin did to Lenin, however unlike in that scenario, Putin is a fascist and a global champion of right wing ideology, with the exceptions you mentioned of ex soviet allies such as Venezuela. He also makes use of old Soviet imagery and language such as “anti fascist” and the hammer and sickle, but he does this purely from a Russian nationalist irredentist point of view. Even the actual communists in China have given up on communism and Stalinism these days, Putin has left it long in the dustbin of left wing ideologies. In its place is a 21st century revanchist fascism, while America slips under china’s left wing influence, basically Putin is doesn’t whatever he can to oppose whatever America is doing. In the Cold War, America promoted the right while the Soviets promoted the left, nowadays Russia promotes the right, China promoted the left, and they both fight over buying and brainwashing America. Both have had their successes, from trump’s election (Russia) to the recent protests (china)

    With topics like these, ThePrint.in is popularising the understanding of geopolitics to a considerable quanta of people. Going forward this could be very beneficial for more nuianced public debates in the masses, and that would be awesome.
    I hope to see an analysis by Mr. Gupta of the affect/benefits that the potential geopolitical rise of India would have over its allies/partners (in atleast the next 10-12 years).

    This analysis of Russia reminds one of the French Revolution of 1789. The French fought for democracy and in return got Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Similarly, the Russians fought against Communism in the early 1990s with the slogans of 'glasnost' (openness) and 'perestroika' (reconstruction) but now they have got an autocratic dictator in return.

    Hi Shekhar,
    I'm a big fan of your show. :)
    Most of the times I do agree with your point of view, but not today. You mentioned that China is a threat to Russia - I beg to differ.
    China can never treat Russia like it trated or is treating other nations (India, Indonesia, Honk Kong, Taiwan, Sri Lanka to name a few).
    Russia is China's only neighbour that can tackle China and may be that's why China is maintaining close relations with Russia.
    With this, it's a game of mutual benefits:
    1. China is exporting decent amount of goods to Russia and in return Russia is providing resources (like oil) to China.
    2. Russia will play a major role in China's BRI. This will boost Russia's economy (like CPEC boosted Pakistan's).
    3. Russia is fighting for spot 3 by accepting China on number 1.
    Please share your views on this.
