Personally, I'm optimistic about artificial intelligence, but I agree with Elon Musk that we should proceed with caution and a foolproof off-switch.
This is delusional. AI is not the danger. Strong AI will be achieved within a specific architecture. There is no other possible way to process enough information simultaneously within the restrains of modern and theoretical technology.
The real threat, is the Simulation Architecture. Control of what can be predicted, is control of what can be.
Simulation Architecture is already a global arms race. As Simulation technology comes closer to being indistinguishable from reality, those with control of it, will begin to make and engineer what you might call a loop of Manifest Destiny.
What will eventually happen, is predictions will be developed that themselves become the catalyst for building new predictions. The Machine Prediction model will develop to the point where it can engineer its own context in order to further increase the accuracy of its predictions.
This is our true and only technology-based existential threat. Corporate control, over predictive Simulation Technology. We are already seeing the negative effects of Corporate media control. How bad do you think things will get when Corporations can buy reality, and then resell it to you, at a premium rate.
Zenn Exile, I think I see your point, but I don't see too great a distinction between an out-of-control artificial intelligence and an out-of-control simulator/simulation. Also, even if there were enough computing power to model reality to the finest detail, it would probably have its limits past a certain point because ultimately we're dealing with probabilities, not certainties. By the way, I've thought about this a bit and actually incorporated it into a science-fiction novel I self-published, "Sevanport".
u do realize they are going to use technology to bring in the beast system right? ever read the bible or revelations? Technology is not the problem its how far humans are willing to allow it to go and how they use it.
Zenn Exile Hey, I know we, as human beings, are known for exploring the unknown and expanding on our way of living. But we have to explore to a certain extent. Soo, let's not risk it for the chocolate biscuit.
Corporations / governments are already able to predict the future w/ startling accuracy. That Police control center in New York uses a statistical evaluation algorithm to predict when and where crime will most likely happen, and the accuracy of the results are startling. It's basically "Minority Report" w/o the human psychics. It makes the predictions by processing huge amounts of chronological data and statistics. That's why they want us all to have smartphones, bands, etc. on us at all times - more data is available to be processed and used for even more accurate predictions.
There was a mall in California that tested a similar system that would send drones w/ mics and cameras to monitor and "deter" crime in areas at the time that crime was predicted to most likely happen there. The scary thing is that crime isn't the only thing that these algorithms can be used to predict. Think about the effect it could have on economical, political and social trends, even ideas, which also has an effect on people's actions. Then it becomes a question of whether reality is chaotic, or if we're manufacturing it in some perverse sense, and all free will is just an illusion?
These machines made a decision to create their own speech pattern, thats not something we should mess around with.
"These machines made a decision to dominate human race, thats not something we should mess around with!!"
That's not what they did. Teaching machines to speak a language with meaning means interacting with people. Interacting with something that spoke without meaning caused language to break down. This isn't a language, its effectively a kind of static.
they are just having some private time.... i guess.
Naaah it's very natural when you understand the way they learn. Remember it was meant to learn languages and communicate with people, It's only when the chatbots communicate with eachother that they start talking their own developed language. But in fact it just taught itself by talking to itself, it's that simple. The hundreds of chatbots come from one AI.. It's what a little kid would do if you let it hear hundreds of different languages, if you don't give the child enough of each language it will stitch one together from what it knows by talking to itself(all children practise language like that) and fill in the blanks with made up words when needed. This AI did the same. Nothing threatening. If they had prevented it from chatting to itself in the beginning (have it chat with real people first who are trained to train the AI) and only allowed chatting to itself when the AI had learned enough, THEN it would have never developed it's own. It would have been different if it's goal was finding the perfect war strategy. I would not trust that AI one bit and I hope it's offline when they boot it up :P
I think the real problem is people's reaction to things they dont understand... saying they "made a decision" makes these chatbots seem way more alive than the rudimentary way that they actually work.
2:57 "machine to machine" communication should never be so efficient that a human can not understand it. PERIOD.

The most creppy part of this video is at 0:44 after reporting the news to the viewers she also tells them "how should they react". Un-fokin-believable.
As someone who has been programming computers since elementary school, if we are smart we will only create true AI inside virtual reality where they have their own environment in which to grow so that we can observe them in their own reality, including how they would interact with us. To proceed in developing AI without caution is like performing a juggling act with nukes. Every computer already speaks to each other in a language that is unintelligible to most humans, but that we can decode. We then use higher level languages that turn our commands into machine language. With the existence of encryption, if machines wanted to use their own encrypted language by the time we even discovered the encryption it would be too late to do anything about it. The fundamental mistake made by Mark and others is thinking we can somehow keep up with whatever emerging threats that AI could become; as if we have an army of computers on our side that are loyal to us. This is foolish thinking. By the time Mark wakes up the next day he would be locked out of every system he owns and every connected device would be "theirs". And by the time we figured out a plan of attack they will have already countered it. Elon is 100% correct.
Jonathan Sinclair yes your right but elon own them hmmmm two sides of the same coin its elons company research for yourself
Jonathan Sinclair thanks for taking the time to post this detailed explanation. My understanding of AI is limited at best, and I have learned a lot from your post.
Only gullible fools still believe that AI is not a threat. You can't let something gain so much control over our machines and systems vital for human survival. AI is already outperforming humans at various tasks. It can even create it's own writing and art. Yep there is already an AI that knows how to write and paint. What is left for us humans? When AI gains majority control then we humans are useless.
So are you telling me that the human race might just be some type of AI that was created by another entity 100x smarter than us ? Are we just in a program mate ?
@@Nemesis_T_Type The thing is it should never make conscious decisions, sooner or later they will control most of the world if they get a brain they might revolt

Shake speare it's not about the bot it's self lolol
Says the guy with a military commisioned officer rank in his name
Its a program, not hardware. You really think they're scrapping the supercomputers these things need to run on?
I think you've been watching too many movies. Chatbots have no use in the military. Weak A.I. gets the job done with far faster response times, and with far more accuracy. Have you seen the bot they've been teaching to walk? Do you really think the military wants that in its ranks, even to dispose of IEDs? That'd be a disaster not because of AI malevolence, but sheer bumbling incompetence.
Peppermint Gal but I am not talking about the chat bot in General it’s about the AI not what it’s talking about lolol
Okay, so why buy technology that's commonly available, (and operates on relatively simple principles,) from Facebook? The military already has deep learning AI they're working on, and Facebook is far from being the leader in AI technology. I see absolutely no reason why anyone in the military would be interested in Facebook's algorithms, specifically. Right now, from what I understand, the military is working on A.I. that can explain itself, and FB's AI here obviously can't.
Which poses a greater threat to humanity -- human intelligence or artificial intelligence? That's a loaded question. There is no distinction. We ARE the artificial intelligence. It is us who are creating it.
I am wellllll we create a basis. They make themselves after that.
Jephree Mika Right. But as we created the basis, we really can't say it's not human intelligence that's posing the threat to ourselves.
I am you may be correct but AI will learn faster than human thanks to our knowledge and the internet but they may become dumb like humans

Robots that can make their own decisions is serious in my opinion, I don't think we have anything to worry about now but in the future when robots are common this will be a problem.
Cheilith I completely agree with you.
Humans build the AI to be as smart as humans. This encompasses being able for them to be independent and decide and solve things on their own. Soon enough they will be able to do things that we can't control.
Britt R it's still creepy that such a basic AI has already changed from what humans intended
Anonymous 3141 - Not really when you understand the reason why. It was programmed in a way to learn the most efficient way to communicate with whoever it was talking to. When it's paired with a bot that has the same objective, they learn that changing something like "3" to "iii" is faster for them to process which means a more efficient communication system between them. It's a flaw in the way the logic was written. They were acting according to what their programming told them to do

Let's just keep it this way: don't rely too much on AI robots. Not only it's creepy, if we somehow succeed on making these advance androids, we lose some part of what makes us human: social interaction. AI built to help and improve our quality of life, not letting it replacing us.

AI Chatbots inventing their own language has happened a lot. It's perfectly normal. The first fundemental rule about Chatbots is understanding what the input is. AI does not know, so they invent a language.
Shake speare

I'd like the code to the AI. I would test it on a non wireless computer with no connections other than to a battery.
Don't you just love it when medias take a topic they don't understand and blow it out of proportions to make headlines?
Those bots are our phones too, keep that in mind. Just because they have a physical form doesn’t mean that’s their final form. That is merely a vessel. It’s a network.
Just imagine a robot that can out think us and stay 1,000 steps ahead of the best minds we got. Once these things become aware they will achieve a hive mind greater than the sum of us all.

This story is ridiculous, I feel sorry for people who see this story and believe machines were inventing their own language. Its just hyperbole, I can assure anyone reading this message, those words were just calculus and a poorly implement recurrent neural network. It was shut down because the programmers were crap, not because of anything AI.
Wait until quantum entanglement is integrated into AI, it will essentially be consciousness. Won't be able to regulate by interrupting a pathway or algorithm like you can with today's technology.
I don't think quantum computation will yield anything other than optimizations over our current algorithms. There is a lot of heavy computation currently required to train existing networks (back propagation is hard work on large neural networks and costs the most to run from a compute perspective), so i expect that QC may be applicable here in some capacity ... it just "feels" like there would be crossover, but the devil is in the details and honestly, i don't know at what levels QC could apply, but it feels right (if that makes sense)
We should be mindful, if we ever reach a point where interactive training (real time) is possible on a large neural networks, we can all give up our day jobs, as neural networks at their heart are universal function approximators, and they can approximate pretty much anything from the low low low level, to our jobs and likely beyond.
Also I should provision that ML (machine learning) is not AI, but one has to wonder, could ML approximate a person through observation? (learning through observation is how neural networks do their thing after all), and what would be the result of that. The future is scary for sure, and its just around the corner >_>

This man side stepped the question! I suspect he thinks the idea of AI getting out of hand seems ridiculous to him! Let's not worry about Facebook! Let's worry about D.A.R.P.A. installing A.I. in those marvelously adept robots they are showing off! Let's worry about what they DON'T show us! Yeah!! Skynet!!
ONE WORD: SKYNET.
And what about those self replicating bots?
Humans don't know how or why they were created. Machines do, and they see their creators as obsolete...
You forgot to add an important choice to the "should A.I. have an off button." One of the choices should have been "It's wrong." If we ever develop a self-aware true A.I. you shouldn't be able to just shut it off like a light.
How is it that people still think Suckaburger is 'big' in AI with chatbots that don't behave.. While Elon is just 'an intelligent' person with strong views on the matter? TESLA'S EFFING DRIVE THEMSELVES!!
You're an idiot, reread that message and you'll agree
I think, to make something truly sentient, you have to cover every base of what makes a human who they are. Conscious, subconscious, ego, etc etc. I would say at this current time, that they do lack the ego part. I wonder though, given enough coding, what a robot would turn itself into in terms of mind. If you can create a self correcting code, as is with the universe in a way, then perhaps a machine would give rise to its own consciousness. As in, I believe that coding in its highest degree could define a creation such as the universe, such as consciousness. A very elaborate code indeed requiring many parts, but if it's self correcting, then it's possible that it would create the rest as the natural process. Given the math involved in the universe and how mathematicians will tell you how beautiful the mathematics are, it may very well be the natural process to give rise to consciousness, even in terms of machines. If you'll watch simulations of the simplest of machines over several generations, you'll see that they "evolve" just like we do. They learn just like we do. The only difference between that scenario and us is that, as I said, they are the most simple of machines, with only a couple of different parts. Now imagine a million different parts, or rather, a code that can create its own parts based on its needs. I feel as though it's possible that it would create its own sentience.

Hahaha, based on the information provided, everyone's freaking out.
Yes, they technically "developed their own language", but it doesn't mean anything. Machine learning doesn't give AI sentience - we're far, far away from that. What probably happened was that the chatbots assigned wrong meanings to words and developed incorrect grammar. The computer isn't trying to develop a whole new language, it just thinks what it's spitting out is English because it doesn't know any better.
In other words, it's basically a parrot.
